I'm not lying sir and I don't need to prove it she studied business admin but can wrap her head around FR which to me is the easiest paper to pass in skills, she's in her mid forties now, I cherish her determination though.

Woww, my advice to her will be for her not to write this November diet, probably restrategise, get better and then write May diet next year..

Bros, I still no believe oo. The maximum number of years one could use to sit professional exams was 10 years before now. It's even now 5 years for the final level. Unless you included years spent sitting ATSWA.

Advise her go get a private tutor for the subject . If she can do this she will pass

That isn't the sure way out. She should stop for a while, get better, restrategise, and she will perform wonders..

very funny this is a wrong analogy, don't think this way bro, ican does t give a damn about repeaters, I know someone in skills level who has been battling with some papers for 12 years now, to this date she's still there.

You do know that after 10 years ,you lose all your credits and start all over?

Seriously, it's getting to 60 days now. A faculty member said that's the maximum timeline for the result to be released.

In other news...

Is there anyone here hoping to qualify but has never worked in any finance/account related capacity before?

If yes, how does one cope when people expect you to scatter ground as the latest Chartered Accountant but you be like where would I start from?

I belong to this category, any advice especially from people that passed thru similar experience.

Even me I belong to this category, is there any advice from experienced people? or What are the expectations from newly qualified ACAs

Well, if you're hoping to join the practice.. Then it's really a tough one.. Cuz most firms want to train you from the ground up and don't like to hire qualified folks, except those with years of experience and are skilled (in audit, tax and others areas of consulting) .. But if you're looking at the corporate world, then there's a better chance of getting hired to be a CFO or chief accountant in some corporate office where you'd be required to perform some supervisory role.
Either the above two options, or you're completely freelance grin
Just my two cents tho.

Accounting profession is very broad and you will need to determine the area you want to specialize, Financial reporting, Tax, Audit and Assurance etc.
If you don't know where to start, then you may start with FR which is very common.
You will need to build your skill on how to prepare financial statements from source documents to final account using excel, Quick book, Peachtree/Sage etc.

You should know how to post daily transactions from source documents to subsidiary books eg cash book, post to individual ledger account, prepare trial balance and final account.
Excel is a very powerful tool for accountant because after account are prepared with software they will still be exported to excel.

Knowing how to prepare Payroll which will include PAYE computation is also good.
You should also understand that the illustrations you solved while preparing for the exams are what people do in offices. And you may be given work which is similar to the questions you attempted while preparing for ICAN.
Your study materials may still be relevant to you.

Honestly there is alot to talk about.

There's really no expectation from you , if you are hired as a trainee in an accounting firm then they'd train you from scratch. To some organisations they'd rather hire you because you won't have to take time off work to write ICAN as you are already chartered and they won't have to refund your exam money unlike people that chartered while in the firm

you don't need to believe me oga, yes, you are right about that '5yrs for final' but for skills level you can write it as long as you want. This is Nigeria, even ICAN's integrity can be bought, Anything goes if you know your way, it's not every policy they have they comply with.

you are right about the strategy but one thing I've discovered about some people doing ican is that some brains can't 'take it'. It's meant for the strong.

note:- I did not disagree with what you said about the 10 year policy, btw, that policy is not in use anymore, do me a favor, call anyone, any tutor, or ican lecturers an ask if it's possible when that 10yr policy was in place for someone to write ican for more that 10yrs . This lady I'm taking about has an elder sister who is a FCA and a Council member. Once again, this is Nigeria, we don't really live by the rules.

I Have to say....

Don't belittle or bedevil our profession online to millions of Nigerians just to prove your point..
10 years is equivalent to loss of credit, what ever side deal that's making her write more than that, if I know her name, I Would report it to ICAN disciplinary committee, and her and whom ever helped her, would go in for it.
Our watch word is Integrity, how would the public trust us if we can't display honesty...
It's bad enough she found a way to flaunt the rules (if she did), there is no need to come do a public show of shame and bring it to nairaland. Moreover, if she had a Council member, she would have passed already.

Hi Optimus, you've spoken well.
I'm not belittling OUR profession online. I only wanted to prove my point, {you and I know it doesn't work that way, just because she has a council member doesn't translate to her passing the exam, we both know how every scripts are scrutinized, it CANT be done}......yes our watchword is integrity and I know that, I could say many other things about ICAN that would make you question their integrity. Finito.
