baby124: Interesting, that means the particular kind of Yoruba is also similar to Igbo. The 'okoro' in Itsekiri suggests there's some interchange with Igbo, even if it's a little. It'd be good to see an Itsekiri dictionary to see even more similarities between the languages. 3 Likes |

forgiveness: Okay, Ijebu is further east so it makes sense it would share similar words with Igbo. 1 Like |

ezeagu:Okoro is not just an Ibo word alone i have friends named. 1. Okoro Chibuzor from Abia 2. Okoro Tosan (Itsekiri) 3. Okoro Onoriode 4. Okorodas (Bayelsa) Itsekiri bear names like Okorodudu, Okorotie(Okotie) etc 5 Likes 1 Share |

onuwaje: Okoro means man or male in both Igbo and Itsekiri, meaning there's similarity not just in the sound of the word, but also meaning. Okorodudu is a counterpart to Okoroji, dark Okoro. What does Okorotie mean? 2 Likes |

ezeagu:No, the resemblance isn't because of interchange, but because Yoruba and Igbo (and Edo, and Igala) all used to be one language, thousands of years ago; the languages therefore share hundreds of cognate terms like "okunrin"/"okoro", "eti/nti", "omi/mmiri", "oritsa/orisha/olise", etc. The reason why this is more apparent with Ijebu/Ondo/Ilaje/Itsekiri dialects isn't because of their closer proximity to Igboland, but because "standard" Oyo Yoruba (and related varieties such as Egba) have linguistic innovations that haven't invaded central (Ife) and south-east (Ijebu/Ondo) varieties, which have held onto the ancestral forms of many terms ( eg. "ugbo" instead of "igbo" ). Many of the same conserved terms can also be observed in slightly different forms in Igala, which is the closest language to Yoruba outside of dialects like Itsekiri - so close, in fact, that it should take very little effort for a Yoruba speaker to quickly gain a working understanding of Igala. 6 Likes |

ezeagu: Okoro in itsekiri is from The Proto-Edo word "Okoro" with open Ö. like Orkoror. It is also present in Benin and Urhobo. The Igbo Okoro is Ohkoroh (closed o) 1 Like |

Efewestern: I have this feeling that you are trying to distance or refute the fact that the Itsekiri language has very strong and obvious similarity with the Yoruba language. Take for instance the meaning of "igbajo", which means "gathering of ... ( it could be "... people), and this also means the same thing in both dialect. This I was told by a very senior Itsekiri citizen. I think there is an historical perspective between both tribes. I'm going to Google it to find out more. I'm enjoying the lesson. KimYongSun:No, "okoro" in Itsekiri is not a borrowing from "proto Edo" or anywhere else. It is just the ancestral term retained by SE Yoruba dialects, of which Itsekiri happens to be one, and the reason Edo and Igbo also have the same term is because of their shared inheritance, not borrowing. 1 Like |

ezeagu: At the bold part, especially "Okorodudu", in Yoruba, it is going to "okurin dudu". Which means there are or there may be some assumed similarity between these languages. 1 Like |

By the way, is there a word like oko relating to males in Itsekiri? I know oko is husband in Yoruba, in Igbo, however, oko means male which is the root of okoro, man is also nwoko in some dialects (nwa (child) + oko (male)) 1 Like |

Re: I Want To Learn Itsekiri Language (get In) by onuwaje(m): 4:19pm On Jul 08, 2017 |
jiangchu: i am not in the position to answer that because it goes beyond me. tho the Itsekiri joined the Oodua congress some three or four years ago but the truth of the matter here if u are Itsekiri living in Warri is 1. we may have roots in Yoruba but we like to see ourselves as Itsekiri i dunno if its due to the Influence of the Benin that they have on us. 2. there is hardly any Yoruba folklore that doesn't lay reference to Oodua or Ife if u understand where i am heading to but in Itsekiri folklore majority of us peg our history to when the Benin Prince as i have stated earlier, befre Ginuwa and his entourage embarked on a journey to establish a mystical kingdom at the request of Oba Olua of Benin. what was found in what we know as Itsekiri land today were fishing Yoruba settlements from Ugborodo(Escravos) down to Ode-Itsekiri (Ireju) Obodo, Omadino etc. weda or not these settlements saw themselves as Yoruba as at befre 1480 when the name Itsekiri was Christensen it is not recorded in history. that is why i always say the Itsekiri is a Yoruba dialect that evolved into a language on its own. i grew up knowing that Itsekiris came from Benin, at some point i had heated arguments with people here on nairaland just to quash d claim that Itsekiris are Yoruba until i came across some books and thanks to my Uncle too. 3 Likes 1 Share |
