Hi Optimus, you've spoken well.
I'm not belittling OUR profession online. I only wanted to prove my point, {you and I know it doesn't work that way, just because she has a council member doesn't translate to her passing the exam, we both know how every scripts are scrutinized, it CANT be done}......yes our watchword is integrity and I know that, there are something I could say many other things about ICAN that would make you question their integrity. Finito.

Hello,
I do not know those things quiet alright, however, ICAN maintains a High standard, and as you pointed out, every chartered accountant MUST pass the exams, there's no cutting corners.

However, if you have noticed or have vital information that beckons on the integrity of the body, I believe you should communicate these to the appropriate authorities, even reporting to an FCA is enough.
But I frown upon coming online to mention or point it out as this doesn't change anything and translates to degrading the high standards which our profession has.

I wish your sister success in her future examination.

Accounting profession is very broad and you will need to determine the area you want to specialize, Financial reporting, Tax, Audit and Assurance etc.
If you don't know where to start, then you may start with FR which is very common.
You will need to build your skill on how to prepare financial statements from source documents to final account using excel, Quick book, Peachtree/Sage etc.

You should know how to post daily transactions from source documents to subsidiary books eg cash book, post to individual ledger account, prepare trial balance and final account.
Excel is a very powerful tool for accountant because after account are prepared with software they will still be exported to excel.

Knowing how to prepare Payroll which will include PAYE computation is also good.
You should also understand that the illustrations you solved while preparing for the exams are what people do in offices. And you may be given work which is similar to the questions you attempted while preparing for ICAN.
Your study materials may still be relevant to you.

Honestly there is alot to talk about.

From experience, decisions on which area to specialize really depends on the area of accounting you are opportuned to get a job on. Me for instance, I have been doing financial reporting immediately I qualified as an AAT. So no one needs to tell me I need to specialize in Financial reporting because all my experience has been in that area. Another factor that would also choose your area of specialization is that you would notice there's a particular area in accounting you don't always find difficult during exams to pass Such that even if you fail other courses, you would pass it. Then that's your area. Using myself as an example, no matter the circumstance I must pass FA/FR/CR at once.

you don't need to believe me oga, yes, you are right about that '5yrs for final' but for skills level you can write it as long as you want. This is Nigeria, even ICAN's integrity can be bought, Anything goes if you know your way, it's not every policy they have they comply with.

Bros please stop washing down the reputation of the institute. Remember you are a prospective member. Whatever happens to the institute's reputation will also affect you whether you like it or not. Don't say what you don't know. The five years I agree with you is only for those at the professional level. Skills remains 10 years. The question is who would like to write one stage for ten years?

you are right about the strategy but one thing I've discovered about some people doing ican is that some brains can't 'take it'. It's meant for the strong.

I totally agree with you. It's not meant for all brains. To pass ICAN exam, you must read outside the box and be prayerful. ICAN exam questions are not just about theory any longer. The questions are now practical

note:- I did not disagree with what you said about the 10 year policy, btw, that policy is not in use anymore, do me a favor, call anyone, any tutor, or ican lecturers an ask if it's possible when that 10yr policy was in place for someone to write ican for more that 10yrs . This lady I'm taking about has an elder sister who is a FCA and a Council member. Once again, this is Nigeria, we don't really live by the rules.

What if her sister is FCA?? or council member. Na she be ICAN president? They can't bend the rules for her. Stop saying what you don't know. We all are enlightened

You don't have the trait of a real ICAN student. You are here bragging about such person. If we don't live by rules, why hasn't she passed and qualified. ICAN doesn't know anybody. If you pass you pass and vice versa. Integrity is the watch word. Don't think you can come here and say anything you like. People still live by rules. May be you don't

Ican isn't easy at all.You need to read well and pray to pass the exams but come to think of it if a person writes a course for good twelve years and the person is still yet to pass, then such person needs to re-strategize and pray. I wrote FA in foundation twice and failed but passed with 82 at the third attempt.Ican is one of the greatest challenge I have ever faced academically in life but I know it will end in praise for everyone of us.

I Have to say....

Don't belittle or bedevil our profession online to millions of Nigerians just to prove your point..
10 years is equivalent to loss of credit, what ever side deal that's making her write more than that, if I know her name, I Would report it to ICAN disciplinary committee, and her and whom ever helped her, would go in for it.
Our watch word is Integrity, how would the public trust us if we can't display honesty...
It's bad enough she found a way to flaunt the rules (if she did), there is no need to come do a public show of shame and bring it to nairaland. Moreover, if she had a Council member, she would have passed already.

You have made your point-which was worth it.However,it is not nice to end it on "Come and carry your brother"-i consider this very insulting. Professionalism would frown at this.

Even in skills , as long as you are writing professional exams and not ATS. Now it's 5 years sef
Per level ,not in total ...So once you've commenced a level you have 5 years to finish that level , if not you'll start all over again...that's the new rule...
So looking at the 12 years lady in skills... it's possible , maybe she has exemptions and commenced from skills... so if she failed for 10years, whatever paper she has passed will be nullified based on the old 10year rule and she'll have to start again re-writing the four... but now based on the five year rule per level, she'll be in big shit if she doesn't scale through skills after 5yrs,cos she'll forfeit and have to start again

Experience sometimes play a very vital role in passing certain subjects in ICAN exam. Your boss is a pure banker and not practising either as an accountant in business or accountant in public practice. That may have contributed to the difficulty she's experiencing in passing CR. My personal opinion though

Recently, I have met with students writing ICAN exams but who have failed to develop themselves in other areas. So many other things are needed to be a competent ACA not just the certification only. I met a professional level guy who doesn't have knowledge of any accounting software, very shallow knowledge of Excel. If such a students qualifies, he will parade himself as an ACA, but he might not be able to compete favourably in the labour market. I have however advised him to go for trainings.

No ma...the old rule said you must complete 'all parts' in 10 years....the new rule says you must complete professional in 5 years and the new rule was only effective from may diet. Both rules are on the website incase you didn't understand them well the first time .The only way she has been writing for 12 years is if after 10 years they cleared all her credits and she had to start again but her dear friend said they waived the law just for her because her sister is an FCA

I don't think so, If we can have have inexperienced young people passing then it has nothing to do with been experienced in certain practice or not. Moreover, remember CR is now a new paper in the new syllabus, she might not yet be at home with the 'devilish' standards (IAS & IFRS). Remember old accounts are prepared with schedules and quite different from what we are having now!

If yes, how does one cope when people expect you to scatter ground as the latest Chartered Accountant but you be like where would I start from?

I belong to this category, any advice especially from people that passed thru similar experience.

Hi, have you started your exams? I'm also in this situation and I need someone to share ideas and study materials with.
Thanks
