Hi all... it no more a fable that young stars grow day by day as the dream of driving or owing a car fills their mind. However, most people make mistakes of choosing the wrong choices when it comes to owing their first car. Imagine a young graduate with a monthly income of 50k buying a Mercedes Benz, Volvo or Quest. I'm sure you know the implications already.

The thread is created as an eye opener for newbies and to as well discuss cars that are durable for these species.

I will list some cars here while Auto gurus can say what their experiences are as regards this cars... Golf 3, Golf 4, vento, Jetta, Toyota Corolla '99/'00, Micro, Nissan Primera, Nissan Almeria, Peugeot 206, 207, 306 and 307, Sunny Nissan, Nissan Micra, Audi, Mazda 323, 626 and Camry '99. One can get all these cars(TOKs) for 1m or less. Now let's give our opinions on them. Thanks!

Honda EOD 2005 preferably is still ok for a first time I think because I started with that... Upgrading to Lexus in no time o jare.

that's y I said there are commercial transportations, will make use of it till dollar fall.
the reason why Toyota brands are more expensive than its counterparts is it durability and it's good for Nigerian road cosof it's water resistant level

but seriously I and a friend was talking about it two days back how would I get a 1999/2000 car for 800- 1m while in Australia camry 99 is 1200aud = 250k or less but in Nigeria 800k to even 2m twufiakwa it's just so bad.......so how much should we now be buying 2010 models
Blame it on Govt bro...To ship the ride should be around that same amount you get it with(250k) or more...making 500k to 550k, Clearing is around 350k to 400k...Ask agents here...making about 950...No commission yet for whoever aided you in getting n shipping it. Now, if a Dealer is to sell...wont he add his aswell..? See where it all goes...

I got my toks super clean for 1.5M which I don't think should be much for classy first timer.

RX 350 2010 upward or ES 350 2008 upward of course by God's grace.

The mistake most first timer do make is buying expensive and highly to maintain cars first because they think they have lots of money in bank account at that moment.
Always start with less expensive car even if you have the money to buy bigger one... Maintaining car is not moinmoin!

assuming I need 3fleets of the 1.8l golf mk3, how much should I budget? that's if I'm getting the car's by end of this month.
Note: assumption I just want to have some digit's to work with.

Toyota brands in naija are always over priced toks or naija used BC they are strong, rugged n durable with serious demands. 70% of cars on our road are Toyotas.

Try other brands like Nissan, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Honda if u want sth cheaper than killing urself with trekking angry angry angry
Shut up!

my dear what makes cars expensive in Nigeria is the high duty paid to custom.for a Lexus 330 svu u pay 650k as duty payment

Then we can add more cars so we ship with a container on RORO to have it shipped cheaper and cleared cheaper than getting in unit. My Uncle would take care of the inspection, purchase and shipping...while another Uncle here in 9ja would do the clearing...Price depends on how clean you want it. You can get a Golf 3 from 100€ to 1000€...depending on the status before decision to sell. Thats the first thing to thrash...and be sure you cant compare them to the accidented, flooded and rolled back milleage Golf 3s we have in Lag for 1m or thereabout. So, i can't specifically give you price since i'm not trying to sell to you.

You forgot to add shipping. Could you believe i saw road worthy vehicles for just 50€ to 100€ in Germany...i was amazed. That's arnd 20k to 50k...To bring come 9ja now...it will amount to like 750k to 800k with shipping and the obnoxious duty.

I dont think it is fair to compare an 80's with a 90's car
Damolux01:
Stop trying hard to have problem with my post. If purchasing a Volvo or Benz isn't a money hole... the maintenance could be. Leaving cost of parts aside, are you trying to say the fuel u burn for 1hr trip with your Benz 190 is also what a newbie with Golf 3 or 4 will burn. I use a Golf 4...My pastor uses a Volvo... Anywhere I go with 5 ltrs, he goes there with 10 ltrs... So I know what I'm saying. I love Volvo(S 40,60) and Benz... As a matter of fact, I'm planning to buy my cousin's Benz C230 Kompressor if he hasn't sold it b4 Dec. He doesn't spend on it plus it's a V4 with Turbo(gives me what a V6 would do on d highway with less less fuel usage). Try and advise your younger bro getting his first ride to get that Old Volvo or Benz 190 and see how much of a blessing you'll be to him. Always read posts to fathom b4 comment.

Op pls come and tell me which model of Volvo was a money pit. In retrospect, the Benzru I used didn't even burn a hole in my pocket. Apart from routine servicing and a bad fuel pump( which was my fault anyway) every others expenses were by choice and not necessity. By the way, it was a 190

I have been a Mercedes man for many years now starting with 230.4 /8 which I inherited from my late father. I have used many models including the M series. Mercedes is rugged when the going is good, but when it gets bad bad and you are in for repairs, you will regret. I have switched to Japanese now and am still comparing.

When did you buy ur EOD? I'm sure no one can get it for that amount now. EOD is a nice drive...less issues unlike the V6 baby boy...One need to start with small cars even if you have money for big cars just to understand cars and its crazy maintenance. That's why u see wise rich men would always have old small cars they started with in their garage.

I actually got it early last year but the same quality and grade goes for almost N2M at the moment. Anyways! One can still get high grade toks EOD 2005 probably the LX version and not EX version for N1.5M or lesser.

I don't even advise any first timer to go for V6 but should stick with V4.

You are absolutely right as that was what I as was as well trying to pass across in my earlier update.

Tot as much...Cars were still very much cheap then...Yours should be a V6 machine. I4 is d best for first timers ooo...V6, V8 etc are for pro...but if ones sees a good I4 with turbo...Omo, na d best!

So,this is it, just cos u want to come to NL and sell cheap Volkswagen cars from Germany, you feel the best marketing strategy is to start talking down on all other brands ?

Is that it?
