CHAPTER NINE continued The office had three desks adjoining themselves which were occupied by three psychiatrists who were attending to patients. The psychiatrist who rose to receive him was an elderly man. He was good-looking with a full head of dark and gray hair; he had an easy smile and demeanour that could put a patient at ease. He was holding a chart on his desk and was ready to write as quickly as possible. “So you are a doctor?” Doctor Tunde asked to start the conversation. “Yes I am, Good day Sir.” Doctor Tunde grunted in reply. “So what is a young doctor like yourself doing here today?” Lancelot narrated his predicament from the beginning, only holding back some little facts and detail. He spoke for 10 minutes. The psychiatrist allowed him to speak to his satisfaction, knowing fully well that it was the key to finding a proper diagnosis. He took notes as Lancelot talked and looked closely at him as he spoke. When Lancelot had explained his present state, he stopped. “So let me get this straight, you get obsessed with close female relatives; at least this has happened three times now.”Doctor Tunde noted. Lancelot nodded in the affirmative. “Presently, you have begun having the same thoughts about Jane which you used to have about Amaka and Salem.” Doctor Tunde stated rather than asked. Once again Lancelot nodded. Why was he here? He questioned himself, this would be another needle in the sack from all indications. “Hmmn,” Doctor Tunde continued. “How exactly are these thoughts like? Indulge me.” “Well,” Lancelot started and bit his lower lip, “I get this thoughts when I am away from her that I won’t be able to carry out any activity without her there with me; then when I am near her, I feel sad that she might leave me and my world would be hopeless like it was when I lost Amaka and Salem.” He could feel the psychiatrist’s eyes boring into him trying to access his mind. “What else?” Doctor Tunde offered. “I feel I am losing my mind. Thoughts about the three girls fly through my mind like missiles. I see images of death in my mind, I dream of seeing corpses. At times I feel like someone is trying to hurt Jane and I am supposed to protect her else I will lose her like I lost my other two relatives, the feeling is overwhelming and I get confused at work when I want to deal with patents and all I keep hearing is Jane’s voice crying for my help.” “Sounds scary.” Doctor Tunde studied his face wondering where he could begin addressing the problem. “Tell me, do you often feel scared?” “A lot of times, especially when she is not in sight.” Doctor Tunde rested his back on the chair and stretched his neck, think think, his mind ordered. It was rare to find cases like these. He mostly had to deal with cases of depression, mania, schizophrenia, bipolar disorders and dementia. “Do you or have you felt like sleeping with her before?” “The thought never comes, I do admire her physically sometimes, but I never think of going down with her. I am loyal to my wife.” Doctor Tunde nodded thoughtfully. “I think what we have here is still the symptoms of OCD, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. How is your sleep at night?” “I hardly sleep, I could manage for an hour or two and then the sleep dissipates.” “What, why didn’t you say so before? Lack of sleep is a major cause of anxiety during the day, have you never bought any sleeping pills to help?” “The sleep problem started over a year ago, it had not been a cause of concern to me, not since I started having the obsessions as well.” Doctor Tunde gave him a doubtful look as he scribbled on the chart. “I’ll give you something to help you with the sleep.” He paused, stopped writing and put his two hands on his chin. “Why don’t we talk about Amaka, knowing what made you obsessed about her will help.” “It’s going to take much of our time.” Lancelot said desperately looking at his watch. “Does it look like I am about to let you go so fast?” 5 Likes |

Thanks for the update. Yea, knowing how the obsession started with his sister will definitely help Lancelot condition. He should open up to the wife too or ask her to accompany him at his next visit to the doctor. The emotional support the wife will give him can help the situation. CHAPTER NINE continued Lancelot gave the psychiatrist a long stare; he wanted to object but closed his mouth. He thought for a second, knowing what made you obsessed about her will help. Did he have the answers to his own questions? Could it be possible that he had the key to overcoming his own dilemma? “I am not sure I know exactly what made me obsessed about Amaka.” Doctor Tunde cracked the knuckle of his fingers, this will be tough, he thought. “Just let’s talk about her, you may bring up the very answers we need. Was she pretty?” “Oh yes,” Lancelot grinned, “She was as pretty as an angel, had a soft voice, soft black and curly hair.” “Did you often touch her hair?” Lancelot gave him a puzzled look, the question seemed irrelevant but then he was not a psychiatrist so he went on to answer. “Yes, I often touched her hair, from the time she was a baby. When I touched her hair they usually reminded me of Blue Band margarine.” Doctor Tunde fiddled with his pen, his eyes still on Lancelot. “Let’s digress a little; what influenced your choice of career?” Lancelot was taken unaware; no one had ever asked him this, not even Rahila. “When I lost my little sister,” he began in a solemn voice, “I felt so helpless and miserable; I felt I had lost all hope in life. My parents had a hard time making me forget her, I was plunged into a state of depression, didn’t want to go to school any longer or meet my friends. But when I entered Junior High school and Integrated science was being taught, the teacher mentioned some things about Sickle cell that caught my attention, I then became interested in learning about the disease, this motivated me to become a science student and I promised to become a doctor so I could treat little kids with sicknesses and save children on the brink of death.” “Interesting,” Doctor Tunde said, “So Amaka motivated you to become a doctor? May I ask this, what about Salem, did her death also contribute?” At the mention of Salem, he got uneasy and fell silent. Doctor Tunde noticed this and decided to move away. “Alright back to little Amaka, what kind of responsibilities did your mother give you towards her?” “I took her to her kindergarten and brought her back home, washed her school uniform, fed her most times because she often preferred me to feed her. I lulled her to sleep at night, took her with me when I wanted to hang out with my friends, dressed her at times, I did many things for her, my closeness to Amaka and the fact that I was the first child made my mum give me many responsibilities. I was Amaka’s second mummy, so to speak.” “And both of you, that’s yourself and Amaka, bonded?” “Yes, we were both fond of ourselves, she used to run to me whenever anyone bullied her, I always defended her, even from the caning of our mum and dad.” “Alright, that would do for now. I wish I could have more time with you, but there are still a few patients that need to be attended to. Your case interests me a lot because it is rare, at least in our part of the world. I’ll book you for CBT sessions with a good psychologist, CBT would help you recognize those intrusive thoughts for what they are and put them in place. I have confidence that you will be okay in no time. Meanwhile, I will prescribe just two drugs for you and let us see how that helps you. Remember, the things you go through do not necessarily need to be concealed, when you talk about them you can develop practical skills in managing them. Don’t be afraid to speak up, help will surely come. I know you are a doctor with not much time on your hands, but it is important you don’t take your CBT for granted, I also need to book you for ERP, Exposure Response Prevention sessions, it is going to help you a lot as well.” Doctor Tunde quipped. He tore a sheet of paper from the prescription notepad. “I’m fixing you up on fluoxetine and risperidone. Your sessions are twice a week and you are to show up always if you want to get cured, but understand that with all mental conditions, the key is avoiding anything that could trigger a relapse even while on treatment. Take rests, sleep on time, eat normally, avoid stress and live happily.” Lancelot smiled, maybe coming here was worth it. He had been sceptic about the psychiatrist’s competence but he seemed to know his job. He collected the prescription note. “Thank you Doctor.” “Welcome, you can call me Dr Tunde. See you during the week.” 3 Likes |
