COMPAQ:

Don't you get it! This is a chicken and egg situation. The Genco's need more revenue to fund capital investment, and you don't want to pay more until you get 24 hours power. So which one will happen first. If anyone is to be honest though, the tariffs need to go up considering that most components for power are imported and dollar has gone from 200 to 370.

A win win situation would be to stagger the increase based on a usage range. Say for eggs 0-100kwh per month, rate stays same, 101- 250kwh per month N45 per unit and then 250+ kwh per month you pay N60. That way the middle and high class who use more power pay more and the lower class who use less power pay less. And the end of the day the weighted average price comes to say N50 and that is a price high enough to cover costs.

If we think for once in this country, we can find solutions instead of making noise,

Bros even when the increment was done initially when dollars was at peak N500, was there any improvement?

Increment in fee would not change the situation until total change of board is done in power sector.

The corrupt practices in DISCO arm will give someone a glimpse of what is happening in GENCOS and NERC.

All you hear and see is increase in cost, without a relative increase in the quality and quantity of the services. Nigeria is worsening in all ramifications. One problem too many.....

These hawks ought to know that Nigerians will and are ready to pay any amount for electricity as long as the supply is regular and consistent like their monthly bills which they never fail to distribute promptly. Do they Nigerians to pay higher tariff for darkness? Bunch of jokers!

You are the only intelligent commenter in this thread. Everyone else just seems to want cheap and reliable power to fall from the sky without having to pay its true cost of generation and distribution. The failure of Nigeria's power sector all comes down to an unwillingness by every administration to face economic reality head on.

It's about trust. If they increased tariff then and power increased nobody would argue. But we all know how that went. Tariffs went up power went down.

Now you try to cnvinvr me again. I am not a fool cos I would expect explanations again.

Ps give us prepaid meters first. We would even pay immediately. I have pursued prepaid and have given up.

My brother who could identify the only intelligent guy on the thread, can you also tell us the reason why DISCOS were collecting money for the prepaid meters but refused to supply it, even after many years?
If your suggestion could work, it would have worked long time ago. In case you didn't know, many of these power investors are yet to pay fully to the government, are these the people that will use hike in tariff to boost power generation and distribution?

Do you realize that the DISCOs have to pay for all those imported meters in fixed US dollars, even though the real value of the Naira is half what it used to be? Are you aware that they were already not recovering their costs before the Naira crashed?

The last tariff increase wasn't enough to make up for even the losses the DISCOs were making before the Naira's drop in value, let alone now; just because you don't like the effect of the price increase on your pocket doesn't mean it reflects what the DISCOs really need to charge to stop making losses. You can be as sentimental about all of this as you want, but the harsh reality is this: the Nigerian power sector is now so attractive that no foreign or domestic investors want to get involved, so if these DISCOs collapse ... Let's just say you won't have any more billing issues, because there won't be anyone to distribute electricity to you, let alone bill you for it.

As I've already explained, when you have signed a contract to buy something for a fixed price in US dollars, but your customers are paying you in Naira that is half what it was, and even their old rates were below your cost for buying from the GENCOs, there's no magic you can do if you don't have very deep pockets or unlimited access to credit. This is a matter of simple arithmetic, and no amount of anger or frustration on anybody's part can change it.

If you're looking for people to blame, I suggest you blame the following:
1. GEJ for giving privatized assets to domestic companies without the necessary funds to withstand years of losses or FX risk. Many stupid Nigerians cheered this move at the time for "encouraging domestic businessmen", but it was the height of foolishness, as big foreign firms like Electricite de France or KEPCO would have found it easier to cope with a few initial years of losses.
2. Buhari for stupidly insisting on a "fixed" Naira exchange that is only available to a few connected people (e.g Dangote), which discourages foreign loans or investment from flowing to the DISCOs, because nobody wants to put their money in a country they can't get it out of. On top of this stupidity - which the ignorant Nigerian masses again cheered for "saving" a Naira they can't buy at the "official" price - he then refused to give the GENCOs and DISCOs freedom to set their tariffs as they please, meaning they have to beg NASS members looking for cheap popularity to be allowed to raise their prices.

In short, as I said, Nigeria's energy sector is a mess because of successive administrations' refusal to face Nigerians with the truth about what energy will have to cost, and a refusal to allow the market to reflect that reality. It's no mystery that price caps and artificially pegged exchange rates create shortages of supply: just look at Venezuela if you think any country can escape the laws of economics.

No sane government will ever agree to that. You know why, they enjoy monopoly nationwide. Government grants that to them, they will go for the kill, we're talking about Nigerian "investors. Because, to me, many of them have no business buying power sector.

No sentimental comment here bro.
Why would DISCOS wait for many years until naira started crashing before they would place orders for prepaid meters. People paid for the meter as far back as DISCOS came on board, they only distributed meters to few customers. Now, they are crying about naira crash as if they had intention to buy meters in the first place.
Secondly, as a result of naira crash, the payment for meters was reviewed upward from 25k to around 40 something thousand naira. But NERC had stop the process because DISCOS themselves are sabotaging the process intentionally.
Thirdly, local manufacturers of prepaid meters are crying day and night that discos are not patronizing them while discos too are busy telling us that local manufacturers couldn't produce the specs that they prefer which manufacturers in turn called an excuse not to patronize them.
Lastly, end of DISCOS or GENCOS in Nigeria can never mean an end to power generations in Nigeria. I want you to know that for a fact.
