According to some people here, African militaries should only conduct small arms drills to prove their worth. Battalion/brigade manoeuvres are "outdated", apparently. Or maybe when they're done in SA, Henry?

What threat accessments induces SANDF brigade sized exercises?

Ordinarily, yes. In my best Ebonics, "Don't start none; won't be none!!!"

Have never adopted uncouth language here no matter how heated the conversation. Shall not, however, abide liars especially when they cloak themselves with the shroud of "originator" of the thread.

After fighting WW2, we were complacent and got caught with our pants down, from a military stand-point. I disagree with the politics of why we were fighting from 1969 to 1989, but I honour all those who fought on all sides. So to answer your question: lessons learned and never again.

Here's a possible scenario why we can go full war in just months or weeks from now...

Robert Mugabe dies, battle for succession goes out of hand. The ZDF splits to favour factions. Civil War is looming. SADC calls a meeting to call them to put down arms and return to the barracks, the factions are not buying it..... Then SADC has to go in militarily.

South Africa goes in from the south, Botswana hits from the flank and Zambia on the north... It's a full war.

Exactly why taxpayers employ us to think outside the box. One day when SADC gets its act together:
1) SADC Desert Warfare School in Namibia;
2) SADC Jungle Warfare School in DRC;
3) SADC Naval Bases on the West Coast in Cabinda and East Coast in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania;
4) SADC Fighter School in AFB Overberg; SA
5) SADC Air Transport Centre in Botswana/Zambia;
6) SADC Military Health Centre in Angola;
7) SADC Armour Centre in north Mozambique;
cool SADC Para School in SA, roving training seasonal centres in the region;
9) SADC SPEC WARFARE: Selection in SA, roving training seasonal centres in the region; and
10) SADC Command HQ: Mauritius - no threat to anybody militarily and the perfect place to retire.

Understandable...so what are your existential threats as a nation and are your often brigade sized exercises tailored to meet them? That's my question.

So you insinuate SANDF holds brigade sized exercises shooting blanks for a hypothetical world War engagement, with who? The Second World War happened over 50 years ago mate. Today's major potential global threat is Islamic Terrorism. Militaries tailor training to meet their very present threats which is what I mean by existential. So my question is what threats does South Africa face now or in the medium term that informs it footing expensive brigade sized drills?

Do we have Islamic Terrorism threats? No! Do we have eminent conversation threats? No! But we train and prepare for it all.

Sh#t happens overnight, always be prepared. If Nigeria was prepared, you would have eradicate BH overnight.

NB: In South Africa, terrorists are normally dealt with by intelligence organizations and by guys on suits and flashy sport cars. So you'll never see the SANDF handling those unless they're to provide extra security during raids.

To answer you, I'm not sure where you got the brigade-sized exercises. Maybe from the Yanks bringing a brigade for the current exercise? Our doctrine emphasises mobile battalion warfare. An augmented battalion group to be precise. As it is, although practised, brigade movements are highly theoretical and battalion exercises are what we prepare.

True SA has no Islamic terrorism and most importantly no Salafi strain of Jihadi Islam of the Wahabi doctrine we see in this parts which of course allows your security agencies to be on suits and flashy cars pretending to be 'anti-terrorists gendarmes. Wait until Shekau sends over a battalion of Bokos. And by the way America, Britain, Russia, France etc ain't prepared so even superpowers are grappling with terrorists...

Actually I laughed my sides out reading ActivateKruger. Just funny. But you are forthcoming frumentius. Just a retort here so I move to the question of the day. I like u said when SADC gets it's act together cos now it hasn't. I'm here not to massage egos or peddle falsehoods but to be factual whether about Nigeria, South Africa or anyother country. We can all be reasonable and serious minded. In the spirit of that your SADC security architecture projections are good on paper but in practicality too ambitious. Many factors not least the elephant in the room funding. Whose gonna pay? South Africa the boss there don't have the money.

Supports SA's foreign policy.

Political leaders will prefer to deal with things on the table rather than military action. As seen in Lesotho.

I agree. It's hard to fault the NAF, makes you wonder what could have been achieved if we had this sort of leadership 4 years ago.

Gentlemen the unanswered question is what threats does South Africa face that warrants it holding brigade sized exercises?

I hope we can allow for intellectual reasoning

There is a consensus among experts that South Africa post apartheid does not face any threat of external aggression. There is no existential threat against SA territorial integrity and national sovereignty.

South Africa does not face any threat from it's neighbors or any African country or beyond. Nigeria is not invading SA anytime soon grin
