Nigerians & the worship of school degrees. SMH. How much has our worship of degrees done for our country? NOTHING...NOTHING TO SHOW. Nobody cares about your worship of degrees if the knowledge does not translate to bettering real life situations on ground. |

prettyboi1: You people say this all the time. But a degree is needed to advance to the level where a higher knowledge will be attained to stimulate advancement. Some will mouth Facebook, Microsoft etc, but the people hired to run these places have degrees from the best universities around. In addition, contemporary research that has led to technological advancement was performed by people who had degrees...In this case, research degrees 4 Likes |

baum1: NIGERIA DOES NOT HAVE EVEN A SINGLE UNIVERSITY. Just expanded secondary school equivalents... And that's why we are predominantly unemployable. Wen Nigerian graduates get, the firm that hired them still spend from a few thousands, hundreds of thousands or millions training them. Don't u know why u see expatriates everywhere u look in nigeria |

PrecisionFx: If you wish to carry the discussion further, define theory. Meanwhile, that expatriates work in a country does not mean the higher level education in that country is crap. There're many reasons why firms bring in foreigners to work domestically and this cannot be used to gauge the standard of education in a country.. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Re: The Two Main Types Of First Class Graduates by Nobody: 11:48pm On Jul 14, 2017 |
baum1:thank you. They just keep hammering on theory this theory that without knowing that that is the basis of science...or o they think planes fly just because some materials are constructed and put together. Forgetting the design processes..aerodynamics..fluid mechanics and power. The painful part is that this people think that repairing a damaged vehicle is the engineering one studied... In advance countries there are engineers and.. technologist as well as technician and craftmen. 2 Likes |

Re: The Two Main Types Of First Class Graduates by AreaFada2: 12:27am On Jul 15, 2017 |
debbie:This point is very valid. That is why in the West, Schools of medicine, dentistry, etc interview each candidate long-listed for possible admission. A massive job but deemed imperative. Surprisingly, very little is asked about academic ability. You will have proven that stellar grades already. And they have it on record. They focus on your personality, interpersonal skills, life experience, hobbies, knowledge of foreign languages, record of involvement in charitable, volunteer or community service. Better still if have been in a care home or hospital environment or the sick or homeless people of some kind. Basically trying to recruit people who are more rounded instead of just bookworms only. It enables candidates prepared for the profession to be admitted, not just those pushed by parents or who just have top grades without passion for it. This can be a big ask if people interviewed are under age 20. This increasing focus on matters in addition to academic brilliance has seen the age of medical students increase dramatically. With many now holding MSc or PhD before returning to study medicine. |

baum1: Don't get me wrong, degrees are needed. School education is needed but it doesn't stop there. What good is the knowledge acquired if it does not provide practical solutions to problems on ground. Nigerians just like to acquire all kinds of certification on paper & usually there's barely or absolutely no application of the 'knowledge' behind these certificates to real life situations....so what's the use? If the knowledge from the worship of paper certificates in Nigeria(like we do) were anything worthy, Nigeria won't be as messed up as it is. You see? Nigeria is chaotic today cos our environment doesn't recognize our many degree certificates.....it will only be able to recognize practical application of the knowledge. |
