Greetings and Congratulations to all Fall 2017 Students. Just thinking I should drop few words in a bid to assist those travelling in here. I will tag it - THINGS I WISH I DID/KNEW BEFORE TRAVELLING TO THE U.S. 1. I wish I knew a student in my school : By all means, PLEASE get at least two 'CORRECT' students in your prospective school that can advice you. Information sometimes can be more useful than thousands of dollars as a new student. I never knew any student in my school then and I still regret a little till date. To make matters worse I entered when school wasn't in session. So, I met no 'CORRECT' student until orientation day. Likewise, make plans to attend the Orientation. I know some will tell you it is not important BUT I THINK IT IS. Apart from the valuable information you will get, you will also get the opportunity to meet new people. I will never forget the Guy that 'gingered' me after orientation to knock at doors and speak directly with Professors for Jobs - TAs, RAs and the likes. That paid off for me. 2. I wish I learnt a handiwork : To some that are financially comfortable, this might not be necessary but to others on the street this might aid to ease of some stress - Learn a trade. (Fashion designing, Hair dressing, Barbing, even Mechanic). My fisrt day in U.S, after picking me from the airport, my uncle drove me to a restaurant and then to have his hair cut. Lo and Behold - I was shocked to learn he had just had an hair cut for $20 (especially because I just had mine cut two days ago in naija for less less than #300.) I did calculation immediately and was kinda 3. I wish I knew how to drive and came with an International Drivers License. Imagine me - I had access to a small car at home then in naija and wasn't working BUT I JUST DECIDED NOT TO LEARN HOW TO DRIVE. That's one of my foolish decisions. Public transportation in the U.S is 'Zero in some cities' and if you dont have a car, it is as simple as you dont have a leg - YOU WILL BE CARRIED ABOUT, not without stress, heavy bills etc. Why not save yourself the stress now and learn in naija. Likewise, INTERNATIONAL Drivers License is permitted to drive with in some states. 4. I wish I spoke the truth. Well, I am not the kind of person that believes in lying but whatever came upon me at the POE when asked if I came with food items, I still can't fathom. I at first said no to the officer. I later said except few dried fishes and snacks. However, I had several types of foodstuffs, from dried fish to Garri to Ogbonno, to Egusi etc. I had to be delayed for about an hour and half where I later now listed all I can remember was in my bag . Not without fear and anxiety. Save yourself the stress and simply tell them what's in there. (They already know) 5. I wish I came with a minimum of three jeans and probably a snickers. . For new students, I don't believe the first few months will be one where you need to spend money on stuffs like wears except you are obo. One or two correct jeans will do the magic. JJC like me, I don't put on jeans in naija so I came with what this man has said up there is worth its weight in GOLD! Except you have a huge supply of inexhaustible funds, pls learn a skill before u get on that plane. Especially mechanic and hairmaking, and for those who can play musical instruments infact money go dey look for you! This is another reason why u shud look for reputable schs in cities where u will get more opportunities to make side cash based on your skills rather than a sch in a village where even if every1 patronise u, u still wont make ends meet. Besides u will stand out very quickly in a rural area which might not be good for u on the long run. My 2cents 5 Likes 1 Share |

Oseni007: No be small thing. That black VO really dealt with the female scout in the team. I wonder if that lady has ever undergone such drilling before. And if I recall correctly, she was eventually denied. The guys that were approved by the man were just lucky... let's call it grace. There was one particular scout I would have delayed if I was the VO because he was so vague in most replies ... but he got approved! These things are highly subjective. God bless our efforts o. |

LagosismyHome: Thanks, but I believe I mentioned that I have a research assistantship and that my uncle would be footing the rest. I'm sorry I didn't include it in the transcript. I will modify it. I remember mentioning that, just that it skipped my memory as I was typing my transcript. His issue wasn't that the money wouldn't be enough. It was that it is a company account, which still sounds weird to most people I have told because I also came with letters from the bank and the man himself that owns the company, concerning the company. But like I said, God knows the best. Thanks for the advice. If it comes up again, I shall certainly not forget to mention it. 1 Like |

Ability247: To the best of my knowledge, company account is at disadvantage with F1 to some extent depending on whom your VO is; B1/2 with company account won't have an issue. Infact, three of my colleague and I got our B1/2 with our company's account in 2014. A company is an entity on its own; if it liquidates what happens to you? I will advise you use your uncle personal acct in future. I am not a VO; this is just my view BUT COMPANY ACCOUNT AND F1 VISA ARE LIKE A MARRIAGE WHERE ONE IS BEING COMPELLED ON OTHER; IT WON'T WORK. |

Hello House, I wrote my GRE last year. q151 v149 A4.0 i stopped the applications along the way because i diverted some of the money intended for use then. I am considering re writing the GRE and also TOEFL Some schools i tried contacting wants me to evaluate my transcript. Most of the schools are in south dakota. kekenation: Abeg make we help this bro; I don see this post like 3 times since yesterday. If you feel your GRE scores are low, try another one. Why are you looking for GP booster? Check Cameron Uni; they should admit you with waiver. Abeg go evaluate your transcripts if it's compulsory or check other schools that do not need evaluation. Good luck!! |

folmus: Someone I know recently got approved with a company account. And the owner of the company isn't even related to the person by blood. If my uncle's personal acc could do the job, I would have used it. If he moves large chunks of money there now, it would look suspicious. I am just praying for more grace this time 1 Like |

Please I'd like to ask. Can someone carry 3 boxes to the airport? 1 big box, and 2 small ones that can substitute for another box23kg. Because I know the airline policy is 2 23kg luggage. The first box will be 23kg or even less. And since I don't have a second box that can carry so much or weigh 23kg or even close, can one carry 2 small bags/boxes that'll substitute the second 23kg. cc: Lagosismyhome, femi312, and others. Thanks |

olarich30:Yeah one way is the advisable ticket for a student. Except you want to buy PTA in banks that's where you'll need a return ticket. But your one way ticket doesn't give any issue at the POE as they don't expect you back so soon. |

Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 12 by femi312: 4:52pm On Jul 15, 2017 |
gaviria:No I don't think so, that's why sometimes they tell someone carrying 2 boxes with one that is less than 23kg and one more than 23kg to move some of the stuffs in the more box to the less box. Its advisable you buy a big box to avoid unnecessary charges. By the way, IF you are connecting a flight in the US, you will pay for all luggage 2 Likes |
