beardlessdude: Of course it's your choice. No one will raise your child for you. But I personally don't mind accents. In fact, I've come to appreciate them. I can't look down on any none English person speaking English with their Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo varying dialect accents. This is btw, but I equally noticed African francophone countries have a differnt accent from the French themselves, and it's atimes difficult for them to understand each other. I also noticed even British people that speak French, speak with a British accent despite being proud of the fact they could speak French. Languages are interesting anyway. I don't believe any is superior to the other. Oyibo people are coming to Nigeria to learn our core languages even in the university. There are even some languages which are almost going extinct( not necessarily Nigerian, which people are trying to study). Anyway, lemme come and be going as I seem to have changed the spirit/ topic of the thread.. |

I agree with your friends, I rather teach my kids French than Urohobo, who language don epp? Although I don't mind them learning the basic once, so they don't look entirely like novices when spoken to in their dialect. |

Majestee: Did you really type this? So you mean that those Call Centre agents who are hired because they speak Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa were not employed because of the language they speak? Do you know that some companies (especially those whose HQ are not located in natively English speaking countries) have strict bi-lingual requirements for anyone who wants to become a C-level executive? How about those people who translate for people? At least in the Tech industry where I work; I know that software is usually translated into multiple languages to enhance its reach due to a factor called localization. Wait! Did you think the French use an English version of Twitter, Facebook or Whatsapp? And don't think I have veered off topic. Your question was Does language provide jobs?. And the emphatic answer is yes! Why Nigerians so much look down on their local languages baffle me. If Facebook (the same Facebook that now has 2 billion users) has been translated to Hausa, then it means that Hausa is important to Facebook. I bet you didn't know that. What if I also told you that the popular Windows Operating System and Microsoft Office Suite has Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba language packs? I know because I have the Yoruba language pack installed on my PC. If these powerful Corporations are conscious of how local languages drive the adoption of their products, then we that own the languages should not trample on them. Language is and will continue to be a very powerful tool for economic, psychological and social development. 7 Likes

simiolu1: Nwanna, ekene m gi, hapu ndi a na eche na asusu ndi ozo ka nke ha mma. Thank you so much brother, don't mind all these folks that think other people's language is better than theirs. I personally changed my facebook to Igbo language, I write everything in Igbo. I had to download the Igbo language pack of Windows Os so I can be able to write in Igbo language. I shudder when I imagine the thought process of some individuals and at the end of the day they will marry and produce offsprings thereby propagating their wanton stupidity. Egwu di, kama m ga ahapu asusu Igbo, o ka mma na m kwusiri isu oyibo. 1 Like |
