Hello House,

Kindly advise me on which way to follow. I currently earn 150k per month and I am thinking of enrolling for an MBA in Unilag. My headache is I will have to pick the full time option because it is cheaper and has better lecture hours, which means I have to stop work. Classes are from 9am-2pm weekly. The fee is about 200k.
I am skeptical about the part time option because its classes are during the evenings from 4pm to 8pm. I live and work on the island(Ajah) and close by 5pm. My boss won't allow me close by 3pm. He might agree to close at 4pm but even if he agrees to 3pm, there's no way I will get to Unilag before 5:30pm(on a no traffic day) by public transport. And lets say I finish lectures by 8pm, with the traffic and all I might be getting home by 11pm or so(dangerous for a girl). And it will so tell on me because the stress will be too much.(I am already a Lekpa I don't want to disappear). The koko again is that the fees for part time is about 500k.(I just started earning 150k ooh shocked and also ponzi finish my money at the beginning of the year. GREED. don't blame me ohh, many people fell victim with me).
The last option is the Executive MBA. Classes are on saturdays from 8pm to 4pm. The fee is about 2Million. I won't even go there.
If I say I should do another Masters course it will have to be a science course which are all full time.

My question is should I take the risk to forfeit my job and do my MBA? The forms are out. I want to prepare my mind before buying the form(N22,500). I really want an upgrade to my certificate. I also need money to keep me going because there is no one to lean on. Everybody is forming OYO. And I also don't want to regret embracing an opportunity now that I have money for fees. No one knows tomorrow. Please advise oooohhhhhh mbok
sweetheart I have never commented on nairaland before, but your post made made did! I would advice you dnt quit ur job for any reason. Hello, you can actually do the part time MBA in Unilag.. you musnt attend lectures everyday, cos the lecture halls are usually very crowded and I can bet u may not understand anything, also since the lectures ate in the evening agter work.

I advice you commence the part time programme, get your course outline and study ahead of the class, just make friends and get info as regards assignments and testa, u will be fine. I did a part time Msc Economics Unilag and had 3.90/5.00 GPA.

You can run MBA online through ABU and the certificate is same with those on campus no online or elearn written on it. Please don't leave your job they have offices in Abuja Lagos Zaria n others u don't have to go down to Zaria. The fee is 10k registration and 10k for non core courses and 20 Core. If you have business foundation u can request waivers for the courses

Dear Op. Listen carefully. An MBA from Unilag is worthless. A total waste of time and it wont open any doors for you. MBA's are supposed to allow you network with great minds for great jobs post school and also for the contents. I feel a hustling Nigerian should take an MBA for these two reasons. 1) If you have big dreams of working at the best firms and startups in Europe and North América and 2) If you are looking to migrate and you need something valuable to get good jobs abroad. The first optipn also goes for those that have the plum jobs here and are looking to go higher.Harvard, Insead and all.
I would encourage you to face your work, save money, and rack up experience cos its the most important thing in the corperate world. Take online courses via cousera and the likes or do professional exams. The only Nigerian MBA that can make a difference in your fortunes might be from Lagos Business school. No employer would bat an eyelid for an MBA from Unilag so aim higher and work really hard. All the best dear and congrats on securing your job.

Guy this cousera makes sense o...abeg do they issue certificate and how does one pay abeg enlighten me more. Thank you.

please and please dont quit ur job for any msc. it is true the stress is much. i am currently a masters student at unilag too and mine is a part time and yes the fees are high cus it is Law and i close by 5pm too from work. what i do is follow a colleague than jumping a public transport and it makes me get to school in a favorable time. And the beginning would be very stressful but with time, u get to adjust plus ur class governor gets to fix lecture time in a flexible way. i moved from home which is on the island and got a self con close to unilag gate. thereby, reducing the stress on my own part than dashing back to the island by 8pm. besides, when you start classes and everyone comes in late because they are all coming from work. you will get the picture. plus msc does not guarantee you a job after. pls make a wise decision o.
please, how much did you get that self contained that's close to the gate ...and do you still get money on transport?

Do not leave your job. Many pple register as full time students in dat unilag and still work full time. There is a way around these things. At masters level you dont need to attend evry class. It's not undergrad. Just av a good way of communicating with other classmates regularly.

150k job is somtin o. Dont quit it. Jobs are very hard to get in dis economy. From experience you badly need a steady source of income to run thru a masters program. It can be very hectic and difficult to run a masters if you dont av money. You will regret quitting your job and feel like quiting d masters over time.
Hold tight to dat freaking job for now. Masters or no masters. Evn masters holders still finish and start job hunting

Op, this is the best advice here.

My experience: I did a Medical Laboratory Technician programme and graduated in 2007. Later that year, I got a job with my local govt as an health worker. 2008, I got admission to study for a degree, same course. Actually, work schedule was flexible, but in order not to cheat the system, I was also missing classes. Only in year 1 & later part of 5th year that I was serious with classes. Now I'm done with the degree & even planning a Masters in Public Health. It can be done. Let your boss know on your intentions to do MBA. At worst, a 3rd part of your salary should be cut to make your work schedule flexible. When you enrol for the MBA, make friends who will always help you with their notes to photocopy & keep you updated with assignments and tests info. Before you know, you don finish the programme.

Sorry sir, pardon me why u had to do MBA and also MSC? Any special reason? Cos I was thinking most people who do Msc(academics masters) plan to go into academics later while MBA is strictly professional
You're correct. When I wanted doing a Postgraduate, I had initially wanted to do MSc but lectures was during weekdays and the demand of my job then wouldn't allow it so I had to opt for MBA cos its weekend. Later I changed job and had so much time so had to put in for MSc just to keep me busy. I may consider a PhD in order to lecture later on parttime but for now am in industry. Moreso, there's this feeling that PhD holders have that they are better than people in industry, so i can just get the Phd and keep it for keeping sake to show that its not as if one can have it and be in academics but that one just chose to be in industry

Its been long that I did mine. Just google Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply management of Nigeria.Am sure you'll find all details there. I encourage you cos the procurement profession is still a virgin profession and so the opportunities are quite high unlike the admin/accounts practice

Being assured of your regaining a job, I will advise you to leave and go finish the MBA.

Reason foe sayin the above is because I am currently undergoing a Masters Degree in Structures and I have no job but relying on personal jobs from clients who which to compensate me.

But on the contrary, MBA is a terminal course. Instead, take up a M.Sc in your field of study.

I didn't bother to read the content. Just saw the topic and shook my head for u. How on earth will a Nigerian be thinking like this? I pity u. Leave that work and go penniless and unable to even pay the school fee for the masters program. Ask people who are jobless they will tell u hw it feels. Beta receive sense....lolz. U can wait till it's comfortable for u to do it, otherwise hold ur peace.

@OP, you're a procurement specialist at the moment implies you have hands-on experience, your best bet at the moment is CIPS. It's a professional course with much more value in the Nigerian corporate world than an msc/mba. After 10 years, you could opt for doing an mba.

Go to the Bristish Council and you'll get details on how to actualize the CIPS dream.

No one has advised you to quit your job for any academic pursuit now so I'm just adding a voice to it. DON'T.

Hi Sis.
I feel your concerns. My advice.
Don't quit your current job, that's your ace.
Try an affordable online MBA that is both rich & internationally acclaimed.
Currently running mine with the American Business & Technology University. Google it and check out their Course contents. You can even key into a scholarship scheme that reduces cost by about 50% - 70%

Best of luck as you seek to improve yourself.

OP Listen to me, hold your 2 ears and listen good, Don't leave your job. I just finished my MBA there FT and I tell you it's quite flexible, You may just have to work twice as much but do not I repeat Do Not leave your Job. I left mine and I'm still trying to get a job now aside from my business not only me but my fellow colleagues too. I had working colleagues and it's amazing cos even the lectures know some are working. You can attend lectures with Part time and meet with the Class Governor of the FT to register your name. Also when you are on leave try to go to Class. If you are determined you will succeed. The courses are not many I think you will do 7 for first semester and 6, next with 7 for the 3rd semester.

A word is enough for the wise.
All the best
