Let's get dis straight. Those drugs are just mono therapy for malaria. WHO recommends Artemisin Combination Therapy(ACT) as d most effective for d treatment of malaria. So if i cannot get access to formulated ACT, i could take Artesunate, with anoda antimalarial like SP(fansidar etc). The idea is dat u should not take antimalarial with a single active ingredient.

The reason behind the banning of these medications is because malaria should be treated with 2 different forms of antimalarial medications in fixed combinations (Artemisin based combination therapy).
The medications above are all singular molecules, and may not eliminate the offending organism even though the person with malaria may feel well. This leads to resistant strains of plasmodium which is a time bomb. Strains of resistant plasmodium are already noted in South East Asia due to monotherapy.
In order to avoid a costly catastrophe, the World Health Organisation banned the production and sales of the singular molecules, and hence the decision of the EU to obey. The only sensible thing we can do in Africa is to stop the importation of these singular molecules unto our continent, and confiscate any of such that finds itself unto our land.

Re: Senate Releases List Of 42 Banned Anti-malaria Drugs Still Sold In Nigeria by makahlj2: 9:50am On Jul 20, 2017
What is this madness? These drugs are either Amodiaquine or derivatives of Artemisinine, whose discoverer got Nobel's Prize as recently as in 2015, if I remember correctly. Artemisinine derivatives are considered first-line Malaria treatments by the WHO, are considered safe and several of these are in the WHO's list of essential medicines. It's true the Amodiaquine can cause liver damage, but such cases are rare and the drug is safe enough if used carefully and under supervision. Banning these drug is just stupid. The EU is known for indiscriminate and overzealous banning of various cheap medicines, probably under pressure of its powerful pharmaceutic industry lobbies with deep pockets, wanting to promote their new and expensive products. If banning useful antimalarial drugs might work for Europe, it could be disastrous for Nigeria, where Malaria is still a serious problem.

Not about gram because different grams were mentioned. Different grams is for different weights and ages.
Like some said earlier, they are all with a single active component. ACT is the new technique in town, double combo in one drug and that is popularly referred to as ACT.

Imagine, they are banning the drugs from the market. Did these drugs from the sky to the markets? NAFDAC should do their work properly by knowing where to target the drugs at the importation point.

thank you jare, even camoquine is still considered safe in all trimesters of pregnancy, I wonder where they got that idea from, the above named drugs are monotherapy drugs which need to be combined with another class of anti malarials, even the so called ACT is fast losing its efficacy, i have to place patients on artesunate and camoquine combo when ACT fails.
