Fortunate4real: Yes, it is possible but it depends on the calibre of the school. PhD programs are highly quantitative and requires substantial knowledge in Upper Level Mathematical courses such as Real analysis, Linear Algebra, Advanced Calculus (Calculus 3), Advanced Probability Methods and sometimes Point Set Topology. So most times these courses are stated as prerequisites for top programs in Economics. Given the structure of the Nigerian education, a Bsc holder in Economics barely takes any of these upper level courses. This means by default, it is difficult for a Nigerian to get into a top program in Economics except; 1.) He minored some of these courses (especially Real Analysi, Linear Algebra and Calculus 3) from the Mathematics department while in school or was taught these topics in his "Mathematics for Economics" (which is unlikely). 2.) He has taken a Master's degree in Economics, Mathematics, Statistics or other Mathematical related fields. There's a good chance he will treat these topics directly or indirectly during the course of the program. 3.) He has taken standalone online courses in these areas and the school has no reservation for online courses. These online courses are freaking expensive and most, not all, of these schools frown at it. So he should confirm with the school before deciding on this option. Alternatively, he could check lower ranked schools. The Mathematical requirement for such schools are usually not pinged upon "Upper Level Mathematics" as it is for top schools. Calculus 1&2, one or two courses in Statistics, Econometrics 1 & 2 is what is usually required for these schools and by virtue of one's undergraduate degree in Economics, one must have satisfied these requirements as a Nigerian. So with a high quantitative score in GRE, you are good to go. For top schools however, a 170 quantitative score can never substitute prior knowledge in the aforementioned courses. This I think is what Gunther6 has always been trying to pass across to "direct PhD" hopefuls coming from Nigeria. My candid advice to your friend is to; 1.) Get a school that can fund him for his Master's in the US or 2.) To get into a funded PhD program in the lower ranked (Tier 2) schools and then transfer to a top school after pedagogy year. A little caveat comes with option 2, he should ensure that whatever school he picks will issue him a Master's degree after pedagogy year. With this Master's degree and transcript, he can then proceed to a top rated school. I hope this helps? **pardon any typo, no time to proof read** 8 Likes |

Easylife338: The verification guys may require it. It wasn't required of me in Abuja, but it was in Lagos. It's just for sighting and if people are to behave reasonably, no one should make a fuss about it because the fact that one is able to book an appointment successfully is proof that one did pay. However, many people don't behave reasonably and a power drunk naija staff may turn you guys back because of it. So she may try her luck... or reschedule. Please don't type in all caps next time. Shouting at people is never cool, no matter your challenge or mood. |

Teminiyii: You were sound and confident with your responses. However, you weren't convincing enough as a mathematician. Did you forget that there is an immeasurable distance existing between mathematics and statistics? You're going for an M.Sc. Mathematics to specialise in applied statistics? That does not follow bro, it doesn't. To the VO, it sounds as if you were going to a law school to earn a degree in medicine. You would have gotten your visa by telling the VO that you chose this school because their mathematics and statistics department's curriculum correlate with your career pursuit and it will be a pathway to achieving your dream of becoming a data analyst. Hence, the VO would know that it's possible you earn a degree in Mathematics but specialise in applied statistics from this department (Some universities have Mathematics department different from Statistics, some have them together as mathematical sciences and some do not have statistics dept.). N.B: At graduate level, you're expected to master a field of study while you can still apply it to other fields. That said, it doesn't imply that a statistician will be mistaken for a mathematician, that is fallacious and a terrible error to commit. I don't know if I made any sense to you. You can't go for Master's degree in mathematics and major in applied statistics, why? the same reason why a student going for MSc in statistics can't major in Topology or PDE e.t.c 7 Likes 1 Share |

Teminiyii: To me, the issues lie in the bolded. The VO felt what you are going to study is in no way related to your "career", not because you tried to correct her. As a matter of fact, I believe why she stopped you from correcting her was because she felt that aspect is trivial. For her the main issue is, "Why is he going to another country to spend time and money on a masters program that has nothing to do with his career?" And that was why she asked you the question @ the last bolded. Your reply to her that you would return to work in a telecom company as a data analyst didn't convince her. In naija parlance, she go feel say na wash... else you would be working there now or someplace similar. Else you would currently be in that field or career, instead of your dad's construction/merchant company. From the foregoing, she may conclude you don't intend to return home afterwards or that you are not a genuine student. Try to work on that career aspect next time and you'll be fine. you don't have to change it (to avoid issues due to inconsistency). You just need to come up with cogent reasons why you want to study something completely different from your current 'career'. You may talk about your passion and any past accomplishments in that field and how you intend to build on that. You may mention online courses you have taken to show your passion, or something else. you may mention your internships in the telecom field (you have any?) So get creative. Don't lie, just get creative. 2 Likes |
