I once asked my class to join Nairaland to contribute their knowledge on the previous thread, and the answers i got was exactly what you started above, one of the funniest thing is most contributors on this thread have never have any military training, but you just think you are authority and your word stands.
For the love of Africa be civil in your contributions.
A lot of big whips view this thread daily.
this goes to all contributors
Nowhere did anyone claim this is a thread for military experts, Henry started this thread to share photos of African militaries and to rebut the stereotypical view non Africans have about militaries on this continent.

most of the contributers are civilians we have quite a few who are actual soldiers and work for their respective militaries.

And though we might be civilians I can assure you we are much more well versed in military matters than your average civilian.

Lastly when we don't have trolls this thread is civil

On my flight to Lagos, some gripen came really close to my aircraft. I thought we've got some gripens not until I noticed the saaf roundel and RSA flag.

I hope you all typing rubbish know NNS UNITY and NNS centenary can perfectly hide from your subs?

Yeah even South Africa. Special Defence Account. But I doubt ours is anywhere close to the $2bn range.

2015/2016 financial year an amount of R6bn was transferred to the account to "acquire, procure and develop armament and technology"

Whatever that means

Yep. The amount that's transferred to the SDA is public and reflects in Budget documents. What is secret is how the funds are utilised. Even that is not entirely secret in 2 ways:
1) It is audited by the Office of the Auditor General (unlike during Apartheid when it was completely hands off and allowed for all sorts of abuses) and the DoD accounts for it to the Joint Standing Committee on Defence, albeit behind closed doors;
2) Purchases made abroad via the SDA don't remain secret for long as sellers have to file their arms exports with the UN (which is why I chortle to myself when someone claims secret acquisitions).

Finally, the budget for acquisitions for the Special Forces Brigade is also run through the SDA. What they buy from domestic suppliers is completely secret of course, as Denel, Truvelo etc only have to declare export sales. What they buy abroad may be secret for a little while until the foreign supplier files what and to whom they sold. A recent example: we now know SF bought SAKO TRG sniper rifles, silencers and accessories cos Finland recently filed its arms export report with the UN.

African. missiles

I'll be honest I've always had a secret dream of other African Countries like Nigeria Buying and/or Co-producing South African Missiles systems.

I found it sad and ridiculous that the Ingwe or Mokopa didn't get a chance to Mow down Boko-haram insurgents.

I'm hoping that Jf-17 A-darter deal works out, so that we can sell them to Nigeria.

It would send chills down the spines of those "Cheese eating Surrender Monkeys" (France)

Dude are you daft, hard headed or just argumentative. Do you even listen to yourself sometimes or do you think just because you post pics that it makes you better and even more important than others who follow this thread.

Some of us here love to come and view pics and occasionally participate on matters here, so whether you like it or not you have no right to come and dictate, who shall have the right to engage on matters on this thread or are you the player/referee all at once.

Anyway no hard feelings bro.

Thinking is my business. U should too for which u'd have accepted Nigeria's business as it's business rather than take potshots which of course has led some to glorify ignorance on Nairaland.

Did I say it makes me better?? Go back read my posts, comprehend what i said!!

I said certain people only come to this thread when the sh1t hits the fan to troll, they are not here to have an intellectual debate hence they never even responded to my post on the discussion thread.

Just like most in this thread I like a good e battle but after seeing with my own eyes how this thread was actually closed by the M0ds I realized that if we continue like we are we are going to ruin this thread for good hence since after the thread war I advocated that debates move to the discussion page.

Idebates used to be contained between regular users like patches, my self and Henry and never lasted longer than 1-2 pages....but since the trolls arrived things have gotten out of hand.

I get the suspension that you think I'm referring to you as one of those trolls....maybe it's a guilty conscience I don't know, but you can rest your head that I wasn't referring to you as one of them

And yes no hard feelings! wink

He's feeling like they have a nuclear submarine. Their sub can only stay submerged for 400nmi which is just enough to come out of their EEZ and back. Our Chinese OPVs have radars that can see the sub charging dead batteries around 250km away.

Maybe he needs more education on why you called it prey to surface ships.

Dear you are not out of order about Radars being able to detect subs on sea surface when it snorkels or uses a periscope and Technology has advanced today and some Radars have anti-clutter capability etc. FLIR too is used to detect it's heat on sea surface or track it when dark. NN ships operate sophisticated technology.

We don't sail the high seas to Australia, China and back trusting the goodwill of Nations alone knowing some will rejoice at any misfortune of ours. Submarines are great assets and great threats too so no one takes chances yet it remains prey, it's like searching for a dangerous snake.

There are a whole host of options in ASW warfare which is why I said "Integrated Armada". Apart from airborne crafts both rotary and winged using varied sensors like sonabouys or hydrophones to surface combatants with towed or hull mounted Sonar (passive or active) we have our extensive eyes in the sky satellites being one of them (with very high resolution) beyond what obtains anywhere else in the region. It allows us to map the waters of the continent and understand the character of the enemy. Training and experience helps calculate and determine where, when or how assets are moved including subs which is why I said "we know them before we sail".

What obtains now in SSA or questionably Africa as a whole as Subs is only suitable for littoral defence and indequate cos ships have endurance, the sub would snorkel, want to change depth or may send radio signal at some point to base and it's bingo.

Crude intelligence is also a factor. Warfare is not just buying guns, boats and planes. It is more intelligence. Experts know this and they concurred Nigeria's Navy could show up off Cape Town if provoked. Nobody is saying war but in gun boat diplomacy statements are made with presence just like they did.

Don't think otherwise only we don't give out specific details. Crude methods are still applied in today's trade craft. So Nairaland is not off limits. But I'll still speak in parables. Those that have ears let them hear. Finally I don't comprehend the motive of some who pick on knowledge to take potshots.

Anyway...

I've being wondering why radar could see small Boats at short distance but won't see a submarine on the surface of the water. Nemesis2u, you have more explanation to make.
