Keneking: Three tiers of government, but I know your focal point. You need to be reminded these hospitals have managements running them, you'll blame them first before extending it to the government. Managers of institutions should take blame for shortcomings and as they take accolades too. The government can be blamed when they haven't done enough or reneging on their responsibilities of adequately funding these institutions to perform optimally. |

I commiserate with the family on account of their great loss, can be so painful. This may sound religious, I'm not apologetic about it. I think one just needs God's grace and favour to meet with good hands whenever one visits the hospital. I've been to a government hospital where I was misdiagnosed as having malaria when I actually had typhoid fever. I was on admission for a week and they never discovered. I didn't spend 2 weeks at home before I had another bout of fever when a private hospital eventually treated me after spending another week on admission. It is still another government hospital that treated me when I had ectopic pregnancy. If not for their promptness and efficiency, I may not be here today. On seeing my referral letter, they didn't ask for card registration or all those other protocol. They made a bed, prepped me for surgery without asking for a dime. They said they know that after the treatment i would pay, such faith and I knew nobody at the hospital. Of course the bill was high and we did pay. I think everything is just God's benevolence to meet the right people whenever. 2 Likes |

Forget it...Nigeria Doctors are WACK!!! Many of them kill patient faster than the illness. I have long lost respect for them. If Buhari is to be in one Hospital in Nigeria, he would have long been died by now. Rubbish Doctors, all they know is Increment in Salary. |

IDEKEALUMONA:U are blessed! When I read this story in d morning and read LASUTH's account,in particular the way they unprofessionally put d blame on Ikeja hospital,I just shook my head in disgust. This was a patient referred to your facility as a tertiary provider,patient was in your care for 2weeks,u managed him,no improvement and he was in your ICU for another 2months,condition deteriorated and instead of you to simply state how best you managed him,u sheepishly shift d blame to his first place of contact where he spent just a week!! By d way why are patients referred to a tertiary hospital if not to manage bad cases that can't be managed at primary and secondary care hospitals,and even some mismanaged cases.Thats y they were set up.A teaching hospital is not established to manage malaria,typhoid,other simple fevers,uncomplicated deliveries etc.Even meningitis that they shamelessly alluded to can be managed by primary or secondary but most times referred when all standard drugs av bn tried without improvement or patient deteriorating. Assuming it was even meningitis,is Lasuth saying despite specialist consultation,they just read d referral letter and continued managing from there without history and examination till much later when they then diagnosed meningitis? Ikeja hospital has no blame as far as I am concerned,they did d proper thing and referred appropriately. If any Dr worth his salt is to say d truth,not d shameless drivel by Lasuth,Haloperidol would av been prescribed by 60% and 40-60% wud av prescribed Largactil given the patient's restless and aggressive behaviour.The difference would have been precaution with the dosage used by some doctors. Even d mum that claimed simple use of antibiotics wud av cured the patient of the presumed meningitis,I am pretty sure Ikeja med centre would av used antibiotics at some point because many private hospitals do. I am really disappointed in Lasuth for an unprofessional and cheap shift of blame!!! 3 Likes |

dre11:Nigerian doctors; somebody would have headache and diagnoses will reveal that one of the legs be amputated, somebody would have stomach ache they would say the fungi is always travelling through the eye socket so the eye should be operated on! my country is blessed! |

I am sure that private hospital does not have qualified Medical lab. scientist in thier lab. Its like they are using IT students and microbiology graduates , so they can pay them pea nuts. Now wrong diagnosis and death of innocent Nigerian. |

That useless ikeja medical centre is responsible for my mom loosing her leg.. Giving her fake drugs till the leg went bad n it had 2 b amputated. I hope they all rot in jail |

When u bring in a patient from another hospital....the first thing drs look at is the medical history and report from his former Dr. The former Dr stated clearly a mental issue which they could not manage....hence the first line of action is to admit him into a mental ward before any other thing which was done. When the drs noticed it wasn't mental issues they removed him from there...and placed him on the right track. The previous Dr already did enough damage.....imagine giving anti malaria and eye drops plus drugs for mentally challenged people to someone with an inflamed brain. Lasuth is right on track 2 Likes |

I actually took my time to make sure I read the story to the end. Truth is maybe we haven't heard from the hospital so we can't exactly conclude, But judging from the comprehensive facts at hand, it is very unfortunate to think that the carelessness and non chalant attitude of a doctor caused his death, this is definitely not going to be the first, we have heard of other countless cases about how a doctor's negligence have contributed to the death of a patient. The sad thing is, it is very pathetic to know that doctors have actually killed more than they have saved. The question is what happened to the zeal, and commitment to save lives that they pledged to uphold |

Remember, the patient came with history and a referral letter. So going by what you wrote, that was done. A doctor looked at that history before prescription started. That satisfies the basics you referred to! AlanZ: |

Protein0: Haloperidol is extremely potent and must not be taken under these conditions below If one is allergic to any ingredient in Haldol If the person is in a coma, has Parkinson disease, or have severe central nervous system depression (eg, severe drowsiness, slow or shallow breathing) If the patient has severely low levels of certain white blood cells (neutrophils) Must not be taken if the patient is already taking astemizole, dofetilide, dronedarone, nilotinib, propafenone, sodium oxybate (GHB), terfenadine, or tetrabenazine. Must not be used if patient has the blood disease porphyria, low white blood cell levels, electrolyte problems (eg, low blood magnesium, low blood potassium), or high or low blood pressure Must not be used if patient has a history of dementia, Alzheimer disease, seizures, an abnormal electroencephalogram (EEG), thyroid problems, neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), or low white blood cell levels caused by a medicine Must not be used if patient has heart problems or irregular heartbeat (eg, QT prolongation, long QT syndrome), or if a member of the family has a history of these conditions Must not be used if patient has had high blood prolactin levels or a history of certain types of cancer (eg, breast, pancreas, pituitary), or if patient is at risk of breast cancer. Must not be used if patient is dehydrated, drink alcohol, or if patient is regularly exposed to extreme heat Must not be taken if patient is taking medicine that may increase the risk of a certain type of irregular heartbeat (QT prolongation) or the risk of electrolyte problems (eg, low blood potassium). The required tests are attached to all these I listed. Wrong diagnosis kills and every medical precaution must be followed. |

doctokwus: Prior to the administration of Haloperidol these MUST be done. 1. Assessments for hallucination and level of consciousness both initially and throughout the therapy. 2. Obtain a complete health and psychological history especially with regards to cardiovascular and neurological disorders. Include blood studies such as CBC, liver enzymes, and electrolytes and obtain an EKG. 3. Drug history to determine possible drug reaction and allergies. During therapy tests must be conducted at intervals. A high value (greater than 50 ng/mL) for the test may indicate haloperidol toxicity, which is marked by: Vomiting Elevated blood pressure Loss of consciousness Seizures Stupor Nausea Anxiety A low value (less than 3 ng/mL) for the test may indicate more haloperidol is needed to achieve a therapeutic dose From what I just wrote above you can tell the man died from haloperidol toxicity.
