ActivateKruger:It's role, at least in SA, is that of a scout or battlefield recon. Which means sacrificing protection for mobility. And of course it must pack enough punch to defend itself and get out of trouble. And knock out targets of opportunity, like a lone T-55 out for a stroll in the bush. |

frumentius: A similar role vehicle in South Africa would be the Kat but look at how heavy it is. The Generals knew they wouldn't send a boy (Eland and Ratel) to do a man's job. We can't assume that since it's for recorn then the enemy can't spot it and setup ambushes. Machine guns at flank ambush positions would kill the crew and the driver won't get time to save them (provided he lived). Remember the Elands had to be accompanied by Buffels incase of an ambush? So it defeats the purpose of recorn when you now have a column of vehicles in the bush. So send send a thick armoured vehicle like the Kat or dress up the light vehicle with modular armour plates and save everyone. 1 Like 1 Share |

ActivateKruger: That's clever, but one Russian Mi-8 or Mi-17 Hip can easily handle a little armoured car, even with a substantial add-on armour package. They routinely lift 8.3 tonne vehicles. Anything like a Super Frelon, on the other hand, will definitely require the additional armour to be carried by a second helicopter as you proposed. 1 Like |

ActivateKruger:Yes, in a conventional conflict. And as you point out, that's what the Rooikat is for. However, nasty little conflicts is what we're far more likely to face, and an Eland type is what we miss. Case in point, Bangui. |

frumentius: That's no longer recorn, that's guns blazing "shoot a dude" vehicle In that case it would be acting as an assault vehicle.... Throw in a 30mm and take out some Toyota bakkies with the bust firing mode. Throw in some support HMG as well. Then you'd be firing 30mm shells and an M2 Browning from the same small vehicle, I'm already getting chills down my spine. Good God I don't design weapons otherwise I'd design deadly stuff. As Patrick would say, add more "dakka" or go home. (he didn't really say that). 3 Likes |

frumentius: The one place where the Eland truly shines over the Kat and Ratel 60/90 is its ability to be driven into, and dropped from, a C-130 type aircraft with minimal preparation. Its size and weight are ideal for rapid airborne deployments, that's one reason the Israeli paratroops and the French Foreign Legion liked it so much. I've suggested before on this thread that more African armies need to borrow a page from the Russian VDV and allow airborne units to deploy with their own armour assets as necessary. Yes, vehicles like the Jakkals are nice for mobility, but they lack even minimal armour and firepower. Why not have a vehicle that does all three? The Eland is suitable for the task, though of course a more modern take on the same concept is preferential. This would be a vast improvement on the defensive capabilities of the paratroopers, who are especially vulnerable in their role of light infantry. 2 Likes |

Off Topic: Nigeria's Military is reporting that it's Fighter Jets bombed Rann based on Satellte Intelligence that showed the amassing of potential BHT elements in the area, an area which wasn't previously indicated as a humanitarian base on it's operational maps. Henceforth, information on all temporary or permanent humanitarian centers should be made available for clear indication on the Map. 1 Like |

Hrmnn: Paratroopers are deployed with close air support, (CAS) if you can't provide it then you're sending them on a death trip. Path finders or SFs would be the ones who would be sent without any air support in case the zone is too hot for flying, of course they they'll have to clear it (destroy SAMs, AAA, nested HMGs) before Paras are dropped. At least then the zone would be good for CAS eliminating the need for heavy or medium armour. Picture: SAAF C130 flaring 2 Likes

The vehicle that got it right: - 40mm cannon - supplemented with an LMG - Can withstand an HMG - NATO STANAG 4569 Level 4 - Modern gizmos and gadgets - Jammers - You can transport it with an Mi-26 (still have room for troops) * Just add RPG nets Now we talking 4 Likes

NAF GRADUATES RECORD NUMBER OF RECRUITS The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) today, 21 July 2017, graduated 1,928 recruits, who have just successfully completed the Basic Military Training Course (BMTC) at the NAF’s Military Training Centre, Kaduna. The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, who was the Reviewing Officer and Guest of Honour during the colourful Passing Out Parade (POP) ceremony, stated that it was the first time in the history of the NAF that such a huge number of recruits would be graduating at the same time. According to him, the feat was made possible by the recent expansion of the training facilities at the MTC to train up to 2,500 recruits at a time as against the initial capacity of 500 recruits. As a result, the NAF had successfully trained, in all, 4,163 recruits for the Nigerian Air Force, between July 2015 and today, thereby reducing unemployment in the country. He, therefore, expressed profound gratitude to Mr President who, in spite of harsh economic realities, continues to support the NAF to enable it meet its operational requirements and the welfare of its personnel. Air Marshal Abubakar charged the graduands to take advantage of the knowledge and skill acquired, from the newly introduced Internal Security Module, to safeguard lives and properties wherever and whenever they were deployed for Internal Security duties. In addition, the CAS reminded the new recruits of their civic responsibility. “You are subject to both military and civil law. Hence, you must submit to civil authority and protect our democracy. I urge you to treat all our people with respect and dignity”, he added. The CAS also presented awards to the best 3 graduands in order of merit namely Recruits Anyim Emmanuel, Awokoya Adeshola and Nwamiri Chiomaobi respectively. Air Marshal Abubakar seized the opportunity to commission a new project and also inspected other ongoing ones. The POP ceremony was attended by many senior military officers, serving and retired, as well as dignitaries, including the representatives of His Excellency, the Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and the Emir of Zazzau, Dr Shehu Idris, CFR. Many of the new recruits from the BMTC 37/2017, who have received special training, would be deployed to the North East to enhance airfield protection and also support fighting land troops. It is recalled that the NAF recently released the list of another set of over 3,000 successful recruits, who would soon commence the BMTC. DOPRI 2 Likes
