Do you know how hard I searched for this, I saw the video where they mobbed him out of excitement chanting “2 baba” and immediately I knew there had to be a group picture out there somewhere.

I shan't get involved with the minutiae of who won and who lost, except to say the IAF pilots were talking out of school. Convention dictates that details about air exercises aren't released unless by mutual consensus.
I'm a great admirer of how, in all the Commonwealth, the Indian military has been the most steadfast in cleaving to tradition (far, far more than the Britishers; who else still has tea wallahs meeting returning pilots with a fresh brew and warm hand-towels cheesy cheesy cheesy?), and this was a serious lapse. An Indian officer counterpart with whom I liaise as part of my IBSAMAR duties was apoplectic and vowed: "Never again".

And he's been proved right.

PICS: Exercise Golden Eagle 2004, IAF & SAAF.

as far as i know there no breach of conventions, as there was no official release of info from IAF . it was basically a duel between media from both sides quoting unnamed sources.

and what was the fuuking great deal about this shiit of exercise anyways that the IAF will go out of the way to breach conventions ?

but anyways i wished they had rubbed it more onto the face of the blasted limeys grin

as for the traditions thing ( the meaningless ones , colonial left overs , some local fuuckery ), u deserve a medal for noticing it grin

and a kick from me for reminding me of it tongue

and here i am in Africa cool

swinging myself with abandonment from the neck of the giraffe grin (Henrys neck)

taking a joy ride on the back of the hippo grin

wrestling with the elephants grin

chasing the rhinos all over the place grin

swinging the cheetahs by their tail grin

and u heartless insensitive fellow had to play the spoilsport by posting and reminding me of heart wrenching shiit from which i am running/avoid in the first place. sad

thunder fire on u angry angry

Imo,this is classic overkill! Have it mounted for height and subsequent greater reach in its HMG variant at the coy level to get enemy. 50 BMG ,14.7 mm and mortar guys. I don't see the need for a 20 mm battle rifle. Can anyone change my mind with specific tactical possibilities for its use?

In that case it's most inappropriate in a Muslim country. That flag comes from the Crusades.

Prototype armoured car trialled in South Africa in 1974. This received the designation "Boerboel" and was rejected in favour of the Ratel 90. Note the SADF registration plate.

So you'd see nothing wrong with the British soldiers currently in Nigeria flying say, Frederick Lugard's family crest? Hey, what do I know? But yeah, ok.

Rule no.1 of foreign deployment: win over the locals to your side. Nothing to do with political correctness. It's a military imperative as it adds to operational efficiency.
Now, if you decide to go hoist a contentious flag that's not part of regimental history of any French unit, you're making a deliberate statement. Fine, freedom of speech and all that; but does it add to or detract from rule no.1 above?

The assertion being that the flag is contentious; it is not.

Its a provincial flag: Savoy.

Furthermore, your assertion is illogical. One the one hand you state that one ought to not fly a contentious flag for fear of riling up the locals. Yet on the other you say it may be ok if the flag is associated with regimental history. This seems to be an odd basis on which to discern as to whether a flag ought to be flown or not.

If froggie wants to fly his flag because it makes him happy, then let froggie fly his damn flag. The people of Mali, at the very least, owe him that.

The flag was commissioned and designed specifically for the Crusades. Mali is a Muslim country. It's certainly not contentious in France, but a Crusader flag most assuredly is controversial in a Muslim country.
Now, if the flag had been associated with regimental history, personally I'd raise an eye-brow (because of the country where it's flown), but no objection. As it is, someone was making a statement. So my question still stands: does that statement help the French Army's objective of keeping the locals onside?
