Inappropriate?
Is terrorism having respect for religion? Who cares as far as they get the job done.
Looks like you don't understand the possible implications which may include
Loosing support from partners
Providing recruitment material for bad guys
Providing excuse & reason for long combat
In as much as you want to defeat the bad guys , you have to be careful in your approach simple things like badge / flag have exacerbated conflicts ie Iraq.

Interesting read.

https://m.guardian.ng/saturday-magazine/cover/abubakar-we-need-more-forces-to-monitor-every-inch-of-sambisa/

“Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, in this interview divulged some steps taken by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) as the country bids to end the carnage perpetrated by Boko Haram insurgents. As a critical component of the counterinsurgency war in the North East, Abubakar said the service is also not without its fair share of challenges in the areas of men and materials. The CAS also enumerated efforts aimed at changing the narratives in this chat with IGHO AKEREGHA, Abuja Bureau Chief; SEGUN OLANIYI and LUCY ELUKPO”

The flag was commissioned and designed specifically for the Crusades. Mali is a Muslim country. It's certainly not contentious in France, but a Crusader flag most assuredly is controversial in a Muslim country.
Now, if the flag had been associated with regimental history, personally I'd raise an eye-brow (because of the country where it's flown), but no objection. As it is, someone was making a statement. So my question still stands: does that statement help the French Army's objective of keeping the locals onside?

Dude, it's not a crusader flag. It's the flag of the old Dutchy of Savoy, now the province of Savoy.

The only statement being made is, on a balance of probabilities "we are from Savoy"

Even if you are correct:

One would think that the locals would be more offended by the presence men of the military that colonised them ~150 years than the presence of a flag with a tenuous link
to a war that happened over a thousand years ago.

Col. Gaston: "Hey Pierre, now I know we drop 300kg bombs on houses, but best to remove that price of fabric on a stick, we wouldn't want to offend a passing scholar who may, perchance, posses in-depth knowledge of minor frankish houses from the early medieval era".

Lt Pierre: "Ah, but of course, Monsieur Gaston! Once we remove this flag, the locals will completely forget that we are of a different race and religion trying to impose foreign values on a former colony! Thus removing any potential for our adversaries to paint us as invading infadels! Truly they shall be none the wiser!"

Pitching such flag is no wisdom especially when you have to win hearts and mind in a foreign country with religious sensibilities.
It might not seem to be as it appears to be but I bet you one informed extremist has taken advantage of such flag to gather foot soldiers for his so called jihad. foreign deployment 101

The flag was first used by Amadeus III, when he went on the 2nd Crusade in 1147.
The Savoie region is home to France's Alpine military units and they're not currently deployed in Mali, nor have they been deployed there in the past.
Great recruiting tool for the Qaida wankers.

Exactly. It gets rammed into us in pre-deployment how much local sensibilities have to be taken into account.

same here too sir, These same Western nations are always the first to preach human rights while disregarding locals.
High time African militaries look inwards and develop indigenous doctrine.

Anyone here following the "Mighty Russia" page in Instagram?

There is a recent video shared of the SU-35s at the MAKS Air Show. The agility that fighter displays is completely un-fvcking believable!! shocked shocked

Are planes even supposed to be able to do that?

That fighter makes the F-35 look like a real fat turkey!
That maneouver is called a Pugachev's Cobra and its beautiful... Only a handful of Russian planes can do that.

Prototype armoured car trialled in South Africa in 1974. This received the designation "Boerboel" and was rejected in favour of the Ratel 90. Note the SADF registration plate.

One of the funniest AFVs I have ever seen. Ratel designers were ahead of their time.

Central African Republic: UN - Moroccan Peacekeeper Killed, Three Wounded in CAR

An ambush killed a Moroccan peacekeeper and wounded three others on Sunday in the Central African Republic, the United Nations said, blaming pro-Christian armed groups for the violence.

"A MINUSCA (peacekeeping mission) military convoy was targeted by anti-Balaka," it said of the clash in the southern city of Bangassou.

The country is struggling to emerge from a civil war that erupted in 2013 following the overthrow of former president Francois Bozize, a Christian, by Muslim rebels from the Seleka coalition.

The coup led to the formation of "anti-Balaka" (anti-machete) vigilante units, drawn from the Christian majority, which began to target Muslims. Both sides committed widespread atrocities.

"The attack took place while the Moroccan peacekeepers were escorting water tankers to the river to help resupply the village," the MINUSCA force said on Sunday, condemning the assault and sending "condolences to the family, the people and the government of Morocco".

Earlier on Sunday, the UN condemned an "attack by anti-Balaka near a cathedral where a number of displaced people are living". Two children were seriously wounded, it said.

On Friday, a patrol of peacekeepers was shot and one of the attackers killed, Herve Verhoosel, spokesman for MINUSCA, told AFP news agency on Saturday, blaming pro-Christian armed groups once again.

On the same day, a Muslim woman was kidnapped by what is believed to be an anti-Balaka unit and six Christians were held by Muslims. All were released on Saturday following negotiations.

Six peacekeepers were killed in May in the city and surrounding region, which lies around 470 kilometres from Bangui on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Armed groups are still flourishing given the weakness of the state.

Former colonial power France intervened in 2013 to stop violent Christian-Muslim clashes and formally ended its peacekeeping mission only last month, hailing it a success despite fresh outbreaks of violence.

That leaves mainly the UN's 12,500-strong MINUSCA peacekeeping mission to protect civilians from armed groups http://allafrica.com/stories/201707240004.html?utm_campaign=allafrica%3Aeditor&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_content=promote%3Aaans%3Aacbllp
