The Adams Oshiomole built Edo State University should be merged to the already existing Edo state owned AMBROSE ALLI University, Ekpoma. which governor Oshiomole administration came to meet.

In this time of dwindling government revenue, Edo state can not afford to waste money on frivolity.

Managing 2 state owned university in Edo state, should be much of a stress to the Edo state government.

No doubt this university was set up by Oshiomole administration in Edo state for political reasons. He reasoned that since there is a federal university in Benin city, A state university ( Ambrose Alli University, in Ekpoma , there should also be one in the Estako part of Edo state.

But he forgot that it will not be easy for the state to manage that university. Lucky Igbenedion during his administration in Edo state went and establish a state polytechnic at Usen in Edo state. But the school now is facing difficulties as Edo state government can not fund it due to short fall in revenue from the federal allocation to the state.

Come to think of it when the graduates comes out they will still be a liability on society as there are no jobs to engage the graduates.

But wait a minute! why is the chancellor saying that the university is set up for the rich. A university is supposed to cater for the poor, average and rich people.

Flat rate? Do you pay your PAYE at all? PAYE is a progressive tax system.

Let us analyse the rest of your statement. The rich and poor both dodge taxes, agreed. However, the amount collected from the rich will always be more than that from the poor. Do you think all those Alaba traders are poor? Or the women trading in Balogun market are poor?

Again, why can't the govt create universities for the rich? Them tell you say them dey forbid am? Are they not also citizens? Is this a Socialist government?

The Management of Edo University, Iyamho (EUI), has said the institution was opened to cater for academically-endowed students and the wealthy in the society.



The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Aluyor, made this known on Monday in an interview with Newsmen, in Iyamho-Uzairue, in the Estako-West local government area of Edo.



“The idea behind the establishment of Edo University by the founding fathers is neither to replace nor compete with the existing Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.


“But rather, to complement it in terms of providing world-class education with the best of infrastructure to academically-gifted students and the rich, who can afford the fees.


“People have questioned why former Gov. Adams Oshiomhole did not upgrade AAU, than establishing a new university altogether.



“Apart from its being capital-intensive to either renovate or bring in the needed infrastructure, the idea was to provide a different brand of education to the people.


“We are offering world-class infrastructure and state-of-the art facilities at EUI; that is why our fees are high. According to him, the fees range from between N400, 000 and N450, 000 a session.


“And that depends from which perspective you are looking at it.



“If it is from the perspective of a private university, our fees are very low indeed, because there is no private university that charges anything lower than what we offer.



“And only one or two public universities charge the same fees as us and that also depends on the quality of infrastructure and programmes on offer.



“The idea of the founding fathers is for anyone to have an ambiance of everything he desires abroad in any university environment here,’’ Aluyor said.

That's why they're trooping the northern part of Nigeria for studies including Borno and Yobe state.

For the love of God, why would they have two state owned universities in one state.. how will they fund it... it's not as if Edo state was extremely rich.. reasonable people in any Administration would simply upgrade the existing one instead of compounding issues
