Total is 127,000naira.

The resolution of the crisis of ownership that has engulfed the moribund Nigercem Cement Company in Ebonyi State will not be achieved soon.

As the new owners of the company, Ibeto Group went to the premises of the company to begin rehabilitation work. Eyewitness said armed soldiers have taken over the company’s premises, located in Nkalagu, Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, to forestall outbreak of crises as a result of the seemingly unending ownership tussle between the state government and Ibeto Group of Companies.

Nigercem, the first cement plant established in Nigeria in 1954, was privatised in 2002.

Prior to its sale, it was jointly owned by the federal government which had 11 per cent, the five south-east states, 65 per cent and the general public, 24 per cent.

The privatisation led to the emergence of Eastern Bulkcem Nigeria Limited as the new strategic core investor with a 65 per cent stake in Nigercem. But, the failure to resuscitate the old cement factory and obtain import licences for bulk cement forced Ebonyi State government to decide to shut down the plant, revoking Nigercem’s certificate of occupancy.

Ibeto Cement Company Limited, in 2012 acquired Eastern Bulkcem. With the change of ownership, Ibeto Cement now has control of 60 per cent of the shares in Nigercem, Ebonyi State Government, 10 per cent, while the public, comprising institutions such as NICON Insurance Plc and the public owned 30 per cent.
