Sorry for jumping into the discussion. I got the letter through a road safety officer just before I left Nigeria and didn't get to use it until I was ready this year.

So I will assume you should be fine regardless of the time you get it.

I am a geologist planning to land in Canada by 1st qtr, 2018. Do you know geologists around you?

1. What is the transition from G.I.T to P.Geo or (E.I.T to P.Eng as the case may be), after the 48month supervised training, is there going to be an exam or the license to practice as a professional will be given automatically.

2. I have read and spoken to people, and from their experience, I understand that employers are reluctant to employ persons without Canadian work experience, irrespective of how long they have practiced outside Canada. So, for a GIT, will the 4 year training count for the Canadian experience requirement.?

i had deficiencies of 4 courses, so i was given option to take courses and exams from a list of schools. i was then assigned FE exam.

If you dont have deficiencies, and you have 4 years of work experience...your applications can be approved straight away, then you become an EIT...

if you have at least four years of engineering work experience, including one year of engineering work experience gained in Canada under the supervision of a PEng/PGeo...then you become a PEng/PGeo too.

Unfortunately, i dont know any geo around me. i work in the Electrical Industry (Utility). The two Geo i know. One returned to Nigeria to continue his employment (mobil), and the other moved to materials testing (Soil, concrete, asphalt -Civil), but I have come across profiles of Nigerian P.geologist on LinkedIn. Dont limit your networkimg to Nigerians alone.

1. If you have many years of documented work experience, all you would need to sit for is the law and ethics exam plus one year supervised training.

2. Yes..the 4 years count. But you still need one year Canadian experience without which you wont get the PGeo. This is the stage you need to network massively with people in your field, especially those working for smaller engineering or consulting firms since they have less bureaucracy in their recruitment process.

I will send you a sample once I get to the office tomorrow morning.
You can also use your Nigeria license for 60 days when you land as stipulated in page two of the Ministry of transportation Handbook.
Thus, you can hit the road from day one but don't drive like Nigerians sha. They have bad driving habits. Within 60 days you can finish your knowledge test and pass your G2 exit road test.

The letter does not have a validity period. You can use it anytime you like. It is a reference letter documenting your road riot experience in nigeria (laughs), Sorry I meant your driving experience in Nigeria. With a 24 months documented experience you have the option to attempt the G1 or G2 exit road test and the mandatory waiting times are waived.

Please carry it yourself. You are entitled to KG allowance. If that will not suffice, pay for excess luggage. It is about 150 - 180 dollars per 23kg depending on the carrier. Egypt air is 150 USD, BA is 180 USD. But you can it it lower if you prepay for the excess luggage.
Just package your food very well. You can buy clingfilm and wrap your food well. Even the palmoil, make sure your cling film the living day light out of it so that it does not spill. Flying from Lagos, you need to get to the airport early to obtain some food clearance certificate as stipulated in their new mode of operations but Abuja Airport, they are no longer authorised to be checking your bag. Once, it has gone through the scanning machine upon entry and the machine did not raise alarm, you are good to go.

23kg of food for host will be perfect. What makes a bag weigh much is usually Poundo yam, Garri and Beans. Another trick is that you can carry that poundo yam in your hand luggage (if they don't become witches and want to weigh your hand luggage). That was what I did recently. 6 Ola Ola were weighing 10kg. I put them in my hand luggage. When I got to connecting destination, I told the airline to please help put in holding and they were very happy to check it in for me unlike the rude Nigeria carriers, who told me to pay for it as excess luggage. (Same carrier, but once they are not in Nigeria, they start showing you respect and overly nice)

I have over four years as a Geologist in the Nigerian Oil and Gas industry with B.Sc. in Geology and M.Sc. in Applied Geophysics. I guess due to my lack of Canadian experience I am not eligible to apply straight for PGeo. Notwithstanding can I apply for Geoscientist-in-Training (G.I.T.) while im still in Nigeria?
