This morning, August 3rd, 2017, news broke out in form of a pdf file that academic activities are to resume on the 14th of August which has been disclaimed by evidence from the portal() which reveals that resumption remains on the 28th.
However, it is pertinent to note that the portal (with regards to resumption) was last updated around June, when the school management called students back on campus to resume.
To verify the veracity of both, in a phone call with Dr. Adams Akewula, now former Sub Dean General of the faculty of Arts who recently returned from an ASUU meeting, stated emphatically that he has received the new resumption date which is 14th of August on his mail.

In another move, he has stated that UI is likely to hold P.Ume this year, as advised by the Senate Admission Council, subject to approval from the Senate.

OF SENATE, POST-UTME AND UI EXAMPLE

Recently, the Upper chamber of the National Assembly passed a motion; mandating its committee on education to investigate all universities conducting Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) test, with a view to cancelling it. The Senate decision followed a motion entitled illegal subjection of candidates to examinations by universities after the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination.
This controversial motion raised by Senator Heineken Lokpobiri from Bayelsa State seeking to abolish the Post-UTME test possesses some elements of déjà vu as it is a rehash of a similar motion, moved last year, at the House of Representatives by Hon. Samson Positive from Kogi State who argued that the test was an additional burden on parents and candidates. Thus, this motion is becoming exasperatingly platitudinous, having been raised at different time respectively at the National Assembly..
The motion failed to achieve its intended ulterior motive last year, and it is also certainly going to fail this time around because it is overtly more impetuous than methodical. Evaluating the contributions of some of our distinguished Senators to the debate, one was irritated to no end as what some of them knew about the issue was evidently fragmentary. Among those who supported the abolition of the Post-UTME test spoke essentially on emotion rather than rigorous reasoning. There was no evidence of research induced argument; rather, they were more interested in the money generated by the test.
However, kudos must be given to the like of Senators Olufemi Lanlehin, Aisha Al-Hassan Boroffice and Gobir Ibrahim who opposed the motion on diverse grounds. Now, one is compelled to ask, why the Post-UTME test? This is a question those calling for its cancellation have not been able to answer. And, until the question is addressed, the Post-UTME test will be relevant.
The idea of Post-UTME test was mooted in 2005 (at least in University of Ibadan,(UI)) to address perceived suspicion of academic abracadabra, coming from JAMB’s successful candidates. Experiences in UI showed that those candidates with fantastic grades from JAMB examination could not defend their scores. Some of them were asked to withdraw after the first year in the university as a result of poor academic performance.
A probe into this scenario indicated that JAMB’s scores such as 270, 280 and 300 with which candidates gained admission were not only phony but mendaciously fraudulent, robbing and denying genuine candidates who honestly labored to obtain an average of 240 marks, university admission slots. Consequently, it was widely believed that JAMB’ judgment of candidates was no longer dependable. Every year, reports of examination malpractices trail the conduct of JAMB examination, thereby compromising the integrity of its results. Against this background, the idea of Post UTME test was born. Since then, the test has become a quality control mechanism. As far as UI is concerned, the test has given every candidate a level playing field to vie for “our little space” irrespective of one’s background.
With the UI’s model of admission, no candidate needs to know anybody before gaining admission as every step leading to the final stage of admission is clearly spelt out. Even if a candidate is the son of the Vice- Chancellor and such a candidate fails Post UTME test, no admission for such a person. As of time of writing this piece, results of UI’s Post UTME test are still being displaced on the university website. Our Senators could check to see some of those who had scored 270 in JAMB examination, scoring as low as 25 in a test based on JAMB past questions. So what happened? Fraud and corruption: some shameless parents, in collaboration with some bad eggs in JAMB, buying high marks for their lazy children to get admission, which is not possible in UI test, hence, the failure.
It is expedient to inform our Senators seeking to abolish Post UTME test that the test has a correlation with excellent and quality academic output. For instance, UI has produced more First Class graduates occasioned by the test than before the test was introduced. The last four years prior to the introduction of the test (2003-2007), the Nigeria premier university produced 234 First Class graduates. However, four years after its introduction (2008-2011) UI produced 320 First –Class graduates. Observable improvement is clearly discernible for all to perceive unless there is a resort to the ostrich’s self delusion of burring one’s head in the sand.
Indeed, it is a misleading assumption that Post UTME test is illegal..Univer
sities have been given autonomy to select suitable candidates for their programmes based on JAMB recommendations. It is the products of JAMB that the universities are re-examining. So, where is illegality? Nigeria, as we all know, is accustomed to constant backward movement. With the Senate motion towards abolishing Post UTME test, it is clear that the lawmakers are attempting to take the nation backward. Our Senators must not be allowed to take us back. They have had their say, they must not be allowed to have their way neither should we allow them to maintain their sway.
The allegation in some quarters is that it is the children of the rich that buy marks. Children of the poor usually read hard to pass as they probably have no money to bribe anybody. What the rich seek to do therefore is to prepare ground for corruption by removing any post UTME test, leaving only JAMB which could easily be compromised, as the gateway to universities. No way. The nation must not be fooled by a pedestrianism that fails the face validity test. Relying merely on JAMB for admission clearly indicates that there is room for maneuverability and corruption: those who can pay the price can get the highest mark. Nigeria cannot develop this way.
The UI, as the highest intellectual capital deposit in Nigeria is poised to bring Nigeria to her level of transparency, accountability and responsible leadership, not ready to descend to the country’s level where corruption often features prominently in almost every national set-up. The Vice- Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Folorunso Adewole acknowledges this much as he repeatedly says UI is to show the way for the country in terms of responsible behavior and honesty of purpose. As a result of its enviable status, UI remains candidates’ first choice. But since UI cannot admit every prospective student, a transparent system of admission is put in place in which every candidate can weigh themselves on the scale of academic profundity
We would therefore not allow arm –twisting tactics of the rich to erode quality assurance mechanism that has been instituted. My daughter failed UI Post- UTME test last year as a result of inadequate preparation. This year, we both prepared for the same test. She burned all the midnight oil as I closely monitored her. At last, we were all happy when she sat for the same test and she got 79 marks out of 100 questions. She is admitted automatically. This is the practice in UI. No manipulation, no connection, admission is secured purely on merit after a candidate has validated his or her credentials via test..
As one time American President, Lyndon Johnson would say, “a man’s judgment is no better than the information he gets”, I would like to humbly suggest to our distinguished Senators to always seek accurate and reliable information on any national issue before passing their motion. A tirade of mendacious presumption that universities conduct Post UTME test to rip off candidates is, to say the least, illogical. The argument flies in the face of reason as the test is designed to separate the truth from the falsehood. It is always better to engage the brain before the mouth as talk is cheap. Senate should be talking on how to improve the conditions in the universities and not wasting its precious time to reinvent the wheel. Senate should be debating on how to appropriate more funds to the universities so that the classrooms in the universities, some of which are dictation room, could be turned to technology enabled. Post UTME test is legal and desirable. It must not be legislated out of existence.

Prohibition of calculator was a big deal. But I think they intentionally made the test difficult for sciences just to cut down about 16,000 candidates. I learnt 19,000+ wrote the test and they could only admit 3000 candidates. You saw that the cutoff marks were relatively low compared to 2014, even when there were just 10,000 candidates who took the test in 2014.

I heard some arts students saying they saw repeated questions from the practice questions. Did I even see any? I was a lazy student then though.

Technologists suffered a huge blow in that PostUTME.The time was very limited and the questions were extremely complex(Coman see results..35%..42%...41%).But what baffles me till now is how an Elect/Elect aspirant was among the first five.Dude's crazy!

Although I overheard some people saying those who sat for the exam in UCH was given an extension in the allocated time.

I'd be expecting the mail,bruh.
