MtuMsuper: This is just one of the prodigious reports out there by the pseudo- scientists, the pseudo- intellectuals, activists, religious figures and pipo like u who are driven more by sentiments based on those false information than reason.....a coalition of the ignorants who have greatly succeeded in inculcated this irrational fear of the gmo foods in the minds of the masses everywhere. Faced by this climate of widespread Gmo phobia, govts have been compelled to abandon any idea of introducing those foods, despite the worldwide scientific consencus that Gmos are virtually harmless any more than the conventionally grown foods. Gmos are pests and disease resistant (that argument there that they require more farm chemicals to produce is arrant nonsense), drought resistant, cheaper to produce and potentially more nutritious. They are designed to address those challenges experienced with the conventional crops. Govts have only rejected the gmos to protect their political positions rather than out of a genuine concern regading the potential harm of the gmos. Scrutinize their private thots on the issue, the majority really do agree with the opinion of the scientists that gmos are totally harmless. There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding the potential harm of the gmos, coupled with those alleged scientific researches on animals God knows by whom or where. That scientific research about rats was rubbished by the way, the scientist behind it humiliated. Read here >>>> But Gm is not different from selecting the the top creme of crops or animals in order to produce the best breed or cross- breeding different species of the same organism to produce a different and perhaps a better variety of the same organism, except that with the Gmos it is done by manipulating the genes of the organisms in order to produce superior species. If gmos were to cause mutations in our bodies it probably will be only the positive ones, making our bodies more resistant to diseases for example. Why do the effects only have to be the bad ones? Gmos are not bad. http://allianceforscience.cornell.edu/blog/mark-lynas/gmo-safety-debate-over 1 Like 1 Share |

Hbuyosh:Definition of mutation: A Mutation occurs when a DNA gene is damaged or changed in such a way as to alter the genetic message carried by that gene. A Mutagen is an agent of substance that can bring about a permanent alteration to the physical composition of a DNA gene such that the genetic message is changed. its like exposing yourself to radio active material an expecting to become superman..thats all there is syfy kinda reasoning... 1 Like |

mtis: My friend, I also studied biology in school, though not very accomplished in tge subject. But from what I can remember on that particular topic, mutation was defined as the alteration of the structure of a gene, resulting in a variant form that may be transmitted to subsequent generations, caused by the alteration of single base units in DNA, or the deletion, insertion, or rearrangement of larger sections of genes or chromosomes. Mutation can be either developmental (positive), neutral or degenerative (negative). When an organism ie a mosquito becomes resistant to the chemicals intended by the humans to eliminate them, that is a form of a beneficial mutation. The mosquito is thus transformed to survive the very adverse conditions. The process of natural selection whereby only the fittest organisms get to survive the most inhospitable conditions, subsequently transfering that trait to their offspring, isnt that a beneficial mutation? http://bigthink.com/daylight-atheism/evolution-is-still-happening-beneficial-mutations-in-humans |

Hbuyosh:My kenyan brother, that is a very unscientific argument, and I shall leave it at that, lest I derail this thread. Perhaps there's a GMO thread on NL where we can engage properly. FYI the pro GMO lobby are part of the military industrial complex, and they work hand in glove with big media. And you sir, have fallen victim to their disinformation campaign. 1 Like |

The biggest winner of tomorrows elections, isn't just UK but the people! Finally-an end to juvenile brinkmanship, useless rabble rousing, pathological lying and deliberate ignoring of factual data to construct false narratives that has plagued our politics for far too long. Freed from this emotional stranglehold we'll mature politically and develop even faster. I had said if UK somehow loses,I'll leave nairaland;THE TRUTH! |

MtuMsuper: No, it is your argument, and those other anti- GM groups that are not based on the scientific facts. This thread has been distorted almost beyond recognition already, I see no problem us arguing out this GM issue right here, given that is pertaining to Kenya, and an emotive one at that. 1 Like |

mtis: Mtis, that there is exactly why people opposing GMOs have absolutely no clue what they're talking about. GMO to them sounds like comic book stuff, crazy laboratories and mad geniuses messing around with food for their own entertainment and/or financial gain. They think of scientists as malevolent people hell bent on destruction, but the truth is the opposite. The vast majority of GMO scientists work to find innovations that can fight disease, hunger, improve crops and save lives etc.. What they do happens every day in nature, except that in the lab, the process is faster, strategic and more precise. For your info, GMOs have led to some of the most revolutionary, life-saving medicines of our time. ~ If you have type 1 diabetes, GM bacteria made your insulin cheap, safe, and accessible. ~If you’ve suffered from a genetic growth disorder such as Turner’s syndrome or short bowel syndrome, GM bacteria made the Human Growth Hormone injections that help regulate your growth. ~If you’re a hemophiliac, I’m sure you feel much safer with your treatment coming from GMO rather than from blood donations. Cells in a lab dish made recombinant human factor VIII. ~If you ever suffer a stroke or heart attack, you might be treated with medication made by tissue plasminogen activator, a cellular GMO. ~If you have multiple sclerosis, you’re perhaps thankful for interferon, also made by a cellular GMO. ~If you have cystic fibrosis, the enzyme you take, Dornase alfa, is made by a GMO. ~Undergoing chemotherapy for cancer? Two GMO drugs that help your bone marrow and blood counts are Erythropoietin (EPO — yes, that EPO) and granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF or GCSF). ~Lactose intolerant and taken lactase? It comes from GMOs thanks to genes from either a fungus or a yeast. ~If you ever contract Ebola, you’ll be beyond grateful for ZMap, a collection of antibodies grown from GM tobacco infected by GM viruses. ... and many more inventions. And GMO is not as modern as you think, ppl have done it for millennia. Except that it was rough and imprecise involving hundreds of genes at once, changing their position in the DNA. Now, the hard part comes when people hear of introducing foreign DNA (eg a virus) to a crop or animal. What they dont understand is that foreign DNA inserts itself into other organisms in the wild all the time, yielding all manner of outcomes — positive, negative, and unknown. For instance, around 8 percent of human DNA is actually from viruses, which have invaded our bodies throughout history. The concern about GM foods going haywire is arrant nonsense. Your analogy equating GMO to exposing yourself to radio active material and expecting to become superman is very wrong and misleading, almost malevolent may I say, considering the examples of medicines that I have provided. |

kikuyu1: A Raila win is a possibility, and we must be prepared to accept the outcome of the elections, regardless of who wins or loses in order to move this country foward. After all, there isnt much difference interms of the dreams and aspirations of the both candidates for the country. They both mean well. I support Uhuru, but if Raila gets the mandate of the majority to rule this country, who am I to oppose? Isnt this the democracy we fought for in the 90s? Our lives mustnt stop because our prefered candidate lost. Let us all be prepared for any eventuality, and to support whoever will win that mandate in his endeavour to develop this country, and censure them where they go wrong. This country belongs to all of us. |

Hbuyosh: On that note lemmi also declare that despite backing Uhuru for the win (and hes likely to win imo), I will gladly support Rao if he takes it. I just hope that both sides are prepared to concede because as of now, both are utterly convinced they're winning. |

TayserMahiri: Tayser i dont have issue with playing gene thingy on plants or animals but not with humans...actually am a fan of genetic modification for now (on plants or maybe animals ) but direct application on humans is a no go zone..if GMOs can cause a direct alteration of our DNA then am not for that coz i can tell you we are not there yet. (like you said mother nature had time ).the example you gave are awesome an saves lives but lets stick to that for now... |

Hbuyosh:The bolded applies to me also.. Anyway i gonna sound scienty by posting the following Gene mutations can be classified in two major ways: Hereditary mutations are inherited from a parent and are present throughout a person’s life in virtually every cell in the body. These mutations are also called germline mutations because they are present in the parent’s egg or sperm cells, which are also called germ cells. When an egg and a sperm cell unite, the resulting fertilized egg cell receives DNA from both parents. If this DNA has a mutation, the child that grows from the fertilized egg will have the mutation in each of his or her cells. Acquired (or somatic) mutations occur at some time during a person’s life and are present only in certain cells, not in every cell in the body. These changes can be caused by environmental factors such as ultraviolet radiation from the sun, or can occur if a mistake is made as DNA copies itself during cell division. Acquired mutations in somatic cells (cells other than sperm and egg cells) cannot be passed on to the next generation. i have an issue with the somatic one....reminds me of those village dudes who used to repair radios an used to fork the motherboard just to test whether the current is flowing or not...somatic mutation is the one causing some of cancer variations today..our cell have refined library an trying to fork stuff we dont understand might be the end of us.. |

TayserMahiri: I like Uhuru because of the many development projects he has accomplished.....boy, imo he trounces Kibaki by far. The economic growth has been robust despite the many adversities this country has experienced. Raila to me doesnt strike me quite as development minded, but he has sumthing to offer for the country nevertheless. To me, he seems to be more concerned about the basic needs of the common mwananchi like food and affordable housing. Yeah, they arr both just good, I see no reason why we should fight or sulk ati because Uhuru or Raila has lost in tge elections. |

mtis: Wow, u have taken me way back to my days in high school...u clearly were better in the subject than me, just from your above explanation. But let us heed the scientific explanation that GM will have virtually no effect on our genetic make up. Nada. It is no different from eating the beef from a crossbreed of frezian and guernsey (whatever the spelling) cattle. GM is just about introducing the desired traits into the genes of an organism. That would likely have no effect on the gene make up of humans or that of any other organism whatsoever. No conclusive scientific proof has ever been tabled that points to the alleged effects on the gene either positively or negatively affecting the genes, it is all based on nothing more than mere conjectures, and in the case of the negative effects, the overheated imaginations of some pipo. |
