Awolowo-Akintola Struggle Of 1965 Caused January 1966 Coup- Sanusi by Nobody: 6:58am On Aug 08, 2017 |
The present Emir of Kano, Alhahi Muhammadu Sanusi, also known as Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, in a 1999 paper, blamed the Wild Wild West crisis of 1965, a violent political struggle between Awolowo and his then deputy Akintola, as the cause of the January 15, 1966 coup, which was the first coup in Nigeria. The January 15 1966 coup has been blamed on the Igbo by countless anti-Igboists. But the respected intellectual, Sanusi, in a paper titled ISSUES IN RESTRUCTURING CORPORATE NIGERIA laid the blame squarely on the violent political struggle beteeen Awolowo and Akintola which engulfed the then Western Region in 1965, and gave the military the reason to seize power in early 1966. The paper was Presented At the “National Conference On The 1999 Constitution” Jointly Organised By The Network For Justice And The Vision Trust Foundation, At the Arewa House, Kaduna from 11th – 12th September 1999. SANUSI who was then Assistant General Manager, Credit Risk Management and Control Division, United Bank for Africa PLC, has thus shamed people who like to blame the Igbo ethnic group for Nigeria’s first coup. Are they doing so out of guilty conscience? The first coup of Nigeria was not caused by the Igbo or by the Yoruba, but by elements of the political class. Ethnic jingoists should stop ethnicizing the issue. See excerpts: "The Yoruba elite were the first, in 1962, to attempt a violent overthrow of an elected government in this country. In 1966, it was the violence in the West which provided an avenue for the putsch of 15th January." Sanusi also called for an end to moves to ‘punish’ Igbos over the coup: "Having said that, this nation must realise that the Igbos (sic) have more than paid for [1966]. "They have been defeated in War, rendered paupers by monetary policy fiat, their properties declared abandoned and confiscated, kept out of strategic public sector appointments and deprived of public services. The rest of the country forced them to remain in Nigeria and has continued to deny them equity. "The Northern Bourgeoisie and the Yoruba Bourgeoisie have conspired to keep the Igbo out of the scheme of things… "…When the Igbo solidly supported the PDP in the hope of an Ekwueme presidency, the North and South-West treated this as a Biafra agenda. Every rule set for the primaries, every gentleman’s agreement was set aside to ensure that Obasanjo, not Ekwueme emerged as the candidate. "Things went as far as getting the Federal Government to hurriedly gazette a pardon. Now, with this government, the marginalisation of the Igbo is more complete than ever before. "The Igbo (sic) have taken all these quietly because they reason, they brought it upon themselves. But the nation is sitting on a time-bomb. "There is a new Igbo man, who was not born in 1966 and neither knows nor cares about Nzeogwu and Ojukwu. There are Igbo men on the street who were never Biafrans. They were born Nigerians, are Nigerians, but suffer because of actions of earlier generations. They will soon decide that it is better to fight their own war, and may be find an honourable peace, than to remain in this contemptible state in perpetuity. "The Northern Bourgeoisie and the Yoruba Bourgeoisie have exacted their pound of flesh from the Igbos. For one Saraduna, one Tafawa Balewa, one Akintola and one Okotie-Eboh, hundreds of thousands have died and suffered…. If this issue is not addressed immediately, no conference will solve Nigeria’s problems. 11 Likes 2 Shares |

Yeah. And yibbo piple had to plan a coup that resulted in the death of Yoruba and Northern premieres to resolve the 'struggle'. Not to mention that Aguiyi Ironsi was the beneficiary of the successful putsch. How convenient. 12 Likes |

Nigeria should know that this is not 1967, this is 2017 and the war will affect everyone. No more rag tagged soldiers. The northerners are aware and already feeling the heat from boko haram. All will go down. 3 Likes 1 Share |

What a well written, thought out and highly articulated article from Sanusi the man you just hate to love but can't help it. As if to predict the current agitation he had this to say "There is a new Igbo man, who was not born in 1966 and neither knows nor cares about Nzeogwu and Ojukwu. There are Igbo men on the street who were never Biafrans. They were born Nigerians, are Nigerians, but suffer because of actions of earlier generations. They will soon decide that it is better to fight their own war, and may be find an honourable peace, than to remain in this contemptible state in perpetuity." The reality is that something must give in all of these agitations, nigeria cannot remain in status quo. This is a far fetched article from the brown envelop revisionist who would rather blame the coup on the Igbo's without seeking out the root cause. 1 Like |

SHAKABOOM:I think Shettima has realised his error. That is why he has been trying to backtrack but he should hope his boys haven't internalized his initial message. The hateful song calling for genocide against Igbos is one reason they have been meeting frantically with Igbo leaders, trying to douse the flame they ignited before it becomes a full blown conflagration. Supporters of the quit notice should realise that the Igbo protest movement, unlike in 1966 can protest all over the World, they can even protest noisily and effectively in front of the White House, UN headquarters or anywhere they chose. Checkout Igbo civil rights organizations with large memberships all over the World like World Igbo Congress, IPOB, ready to roll out the drums of protest anywhere. These guys are super motivated. Example is Nnamdi KANU who shut down a whole geo political zone in Nigeria (we still don't agree with his Biafra plan). And when they do, the world media will cover it. Global public opinion will be moved and a new ICC case file will be opened. Think of the heat that would be generated if angry Igbo protesters occupy the White House, UN Headquarters, ICC, Facebook, Twitter, CNN, BBC, Nairaland, Zikistmovement. The heat would be too much o. That is why we are asking Shettima to do everything to make sure October 1 2017 is a peaceful day. No one can force Igbos out of Nigeria. No one should provoke the silent Igbo majority into protest. It didn't take a global protest for the world to force Nigeria to surrender President Charles Taylor few years ago. How much more if Igbo's worldwide decide to protest for justice. 2 Likes |

There is no link to even show the credibility of the article, but if truly Sanusi said this, then is the political war btw two Western region leaders enough reason to cause a Military coup carried out by an Igbo majority and Senior military officers? Why did the military not take over government during the several political fights in this 4th Republic? His submission is no excuse for the coup. The Igbo nation ought to apologize for what their military boys did and the North too ought to apologize for the killings of innocent Igbo lives. 3 Likes |

Someone wrote that if you go back in history and research every single national problem, chaos, war in Nigeria, yorubaa are behind it. For example, the civil war would never have happened, had Awolowo told Ojukwu straightforward Yes or No but he kept quiet for days only for Ojukwu to hear in the media after war has been declared on both sides that he has throw his support for Nigeria. Ojukwu team, one was quoted saying " Awolowo is a poisonous, dirty snake; a serpent" 1 Like |

Is SLS a Fulani Herdsman or a Good Shepherd? It sounds like he is supporting the immoral action of Bello and The Caliphate to settle a mere family squabbles, in a bizzare way of tying a he-goat and a Ram together, using Akintola to bleep off Awolowo? Who made Bello and The NPC a judge of Yoruba Culture? 2 Likes |

History has it that the first military coup was in 1962 by the Western region in other for people not to know this truth. History was removed from school also also the coup was termed Igbo basically cus igbos were the majority in military then. Just as today any coup which takes place will be termed a Hausa coup cus they are the major in military. Primary purpose of the coup was to install Awolowo as this couldn't happen politicians termed it igbo coup knowing if awo is installed it could trigger a conflict between Yorubas and hausas unfortunately the igbos didn't see that coming |
