Doctors writing are neither learnt as a course nor codes for the purpose of hiding anything from patients.
It is true most people have bad writing & when u couple that with the busy & numerous things to handle within seconds, how many words u need to put down in a minute to catch up with the lecturer, it becomes worst.
This is the reality. Their bad writing started in medical school. some doctors have good writing though.

It is shorthand.
It's so nobody can just go and start ordering prescriptions drugs any-kind-how.

But when you finally get the drug u see the name Na!! So what would stop you from buying it on your own another time? Please think before you reply.

From my own little understanding, this is not just peculiar to medical practitioners. It's general attribute of very Intelligent people and of course, medical practitioners are mostly Intelligent. From what I've read; with very Intelligent people, their brains work really fast so, for the hand to catch up with the reasoning of the brain, they have to write pretty fast hence the handwriting end up not being so legible most of the time and for proof, I've hardly met any very brilliant person with great handwriting

1 doctor spotted... where are the remaining...

Please the kind of comments we drop esp on issues we know nothing about is mind boggling.

Let me also inform you that it is your RIGHT to know whatever medication a practitioner recommends for you.

As for the writing style, if you look closely you must have realized drugs have both generic and trade names. A Lotta the stuff you see on your prescription paper is a scribbled abbreviation of the generic name and the dose. It is actually scribbled due to time constraint and because the pharmacist is sure to understand. Even roadside chemists understand the writing so I don't see why a Lotta peeps are acting confused.

Funny enough many doctors have fine handwriting. Just ask for their notes before you conclude.

As for me, I write two letters and draw a line, if you want to know the drug name then ASK! grin grin grin

Then u must have been encountering dumbos, all intelligent peeps I know including myself have good penmanship, back then in high school, I fill my class result sheets, take notes because of my beautiful writing, so I don't know what you talking about.

Well, after many years of writing really fast during lectures in medical school, it sort of becomes part of you to write fast

secondly, some names you see arent the trade names , so its normal for a non medic to be confused

it is not strange writing.. Actually it the normal way you write that we, or they write. Either . a microbiologist who is very good can attend to this.. Let assume I say

Patient 1: I dx alpha & TX. P. Falciparum.
Do.. Pt was alpha DX on salmonella typi..

Now what I wrote is very easy.
Every drug has a code name. Or gen name. And know that any sickness has a specie, class, order, genius and family. So if you are sick.. We or they can use specie of the.. I can also say.. Tpt on T. Cruzi.. It all means something. Just like how u abbreviate your writing.. Using 2 instead of two..

Depends on where you are and what the drug is.
Some drugs can only be bought with a doctor's prescription.

Placing the order with shorthand reduces the chances of successfully acquiring said drugs.

We have " too many" to write ,coupled with a busy brain round the clock , but some colleagues still have decent hand writings

They use medical jargon to write, or let me say shorthand. mostly the chemical formula of that drug so that only a pharmacist or someone trained in that field can interpret the writing and avoid you understanding the drugs or self medication...their Normal hand writing is very clean and clear to understand.

Two people on this article with insight to the medical profession have given correct answers and yet received no likes. Those with funny answers get tonnes of likes.. How ignorant can we Africans be! Dumb and unfounded answers like it is a full term course in med school is pitiful. Med school students are faced with lots of lectures and notes copying, at such have got to script things through in haste. Even those with good hand writings have got little options. After med school they are faced with queues especially in Africa. For some scripting in the chicken language is a way of sailing through a busy day. I know of many doctors who write down prescriptions and diagnosis in clean and explicit writings. I personally will never drink any medication until I google it! So whats this stupid talk about doctors not wanting you to self prescribe..The medications you buy do they also have chicken writings on the casing..?

It all started in the year 43 AD when the Hippocratic Oath that all physicians must take was written in poor handwriting by Hippocrates of Kos the father of medicine, doctors have adopted the tradition of using poor handwriting as a way of honoring Hippocrates similar to the way Americans say "Please help us out and put your John Hancock on our petition.” The expression which refers to the bold signature that one of the American founding fathers John Hancock wrote on the Declaration of Independence.

Below is the earliest surviving copy of the Hippocratic Oath

It's a way of protecting their jobs.
The profession has to be incestuous. The prescription should be cryptic too so that an ordinary person can't even interpret it.

Job security.

If you know the name and dosage of the antimalarial drug prescribed for you, will you go back to the doctor next time you have similar symptoms? It is worse in hospitals with inhouse pharmacy, dem no wan make you go market begin price the drug.

The fact is medical professionals get used to writing very fast from their early days at university, that's the only way they can make sure they get notes. It becomes commonplace when they qualify as medical professionals. It has nothing to do with preventing patients from self-medicating. I would also like to add that in most advanced countries like UK, prescriptions are computer-generated, not handwritten.

there's no such thing as bad handwriting being learnt in medical school. The long hours and work and usually hectic schedule takes its toll our handwriting. Many of us have good handwriting tho. I feel the handwriting issue is not true. All my colleagues that I know have good writing except one or two.
