The company started as a sole proprietorship in the mid fifties, marketing pharmaceutical products under the name Owunna and sons company, founded by Chief (Dr.) Peter S. Owunna (late). It metamorphosed into Starline Chemists and Company in 1962 under the leadership of the founder.

Starline, just before the outbreak of the civil war in 1967, became the leader in the marketing and importation of pharmaceutical products in Nigeria. However activities resumed in 1970 after the civil war with everything lost.

The founders guiding principle of perseverance, hard work, honesty and integrity helped to set SNL on the footpath to resumption of business once again. From his humble beginning and strong belief in the almighty, he nurtured Starline through these most trying times. Courage foresight and patriotism brought him into industry.

In 1973, Starline Nigeria Limited was incorporated. With her enormous trading experience and distributive trade, In the same year, she started candle manufacturing. Determination led to the establishment of pilot cosmetics factory in 1973, and the plastic factory in 1978. On the 4th of December, 1990 the founder Chief Dr. S. Owunna passed on and Mazi Clement Owunna (MFR) became the CEO/Chairman of Starline Group of Companies.

Starline Group is a market leader in the manufacture of cosmetics, toiletries, home-care products, pharmaceutical products and corrugated/casing materials in Nigeria.

In over 40 years of its existence SNL range of products have become an important need for Nigeria's growing population. Over seventy products are currently in the market. With an innovative research and development team, the company's scientific 'think-tank' unit responds to the ever changing local and international market trends. The products are distributed locally and along the Sub-Saharan region.

The company's factories and corporate headquarters are located in Aba and Owwerinta; Abia State. The chief Executive Office of SNL, Mazi Clement I. Owunna MFR, NPOM, who is a pharmacist and a Harvard Business School alumnus summarizes with these words:

A staunch believer in the “PETER PRINCIPLE”, Mazi Owunna believes in being futuristic and addressing issues and work ethic as they relate to incompetence. He has a dream of Starline Group that will grow to greater heights.

Starline has maintained an average growth of 30% P.A. in real term; within the past 3 years. In product quality, consistency and integrity, SNL has won the Nigeria Industrial Standard Award and other local and international Awards. In 1985, the Pharmaceutical Company currently named Petsow Laboratories Ltd was founded by Mazi Clement Owunna. The company is approved by NAFDAC and the pharmacist Council of Nigeria to manufacture different pharmaceutical dosage forms such as tablets, Syrups, and Capsules.

Our brands have consistently gained market acceptance in Africa. Petsow has executed different contracts in the past for the PTF and CBN medical clinics. She won the African Gold Award and recognition for her product (Jnr. Starcimol) from the INSTITUTE FOR GOVERNMENT RESEARCH AND LEADERSHIP TECHNOLOGY as the best children fever management drug in 2011 having out performed others in the field in West African sub-region. Early in 2009, Starline Group commissioned a multi million dollar corrugated paper factory at Owerrinta, Abia State, having acquired and modernized the former assets of Smurfit’s Cases. This is the only plant of its kind, serving the whole former Eastern Region comprising 9 states and population of approximately 50 million people.

It is interesting to note that a synergy exist between the cosmetics, plastics and corrugated packaging factories whereby all needed plastics, packaging materials and carton boxes are supplied by the plastics factory and Starline corrugated packaging respectively.

With a passion at being the best at all things, Benedict .C. Amuta, Group Chairman/CEO Beneks Group of Companies Limited established the various subsidiaries today known as BENEKS PHARM & COSMETICS LTD, BENEKS OIL NIGERIA LTD, BENEKS MERCHANT (W.A) LTD, BENEKS MANUFACTURING NIG LTD and GOOD-LUCK VENTURES NIG LTD; all under the umbrella of Beneks Group of Companies Limited.

His sojourn began in 1987, with the incorporation of Beneks Merchant (W.A) Limited. Nine years after; he created the Beneks Pharmaceutical and Cosmetics Company which has since produced quality products of international standard. He went on to establish other subsidiaries with Beneks Manufacturing Nigeria Limited as the most recently incorporated; in 2006.

His vast knowledge and experience in the production of cosmetics products has earned him the name ‘cosmetics entrepreneur’. In his bid to import quality wine from South Africa into Nigeria, he purchased a trademark and solely conceptualized the popular Don Morris Wine which is being produced in South Africa today.

Further to his contribution to the growth of the Nigeria economy, Benedict .C. Amuta is involved in community development acitivities. He received an honorary award from the Rotary Club of Nigeria in 2006 for his participation in the development of , he was also awarded for his participation in the ….. by the Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi ; on behalf of the Association of Anambra State People in 2009.
