Hubert Adedeji Ogunde, (1916 —1990), was a Nigerian playwright, actor, theatre manager, and musician. An ardent lover of the performing arts, he was a pioneer of Nigerian folk opera (i.e. drama in which music and dancing play a significant role). His theatre group was known as the Ogunde Concert Party at inception in 1945. It was the first professional, theatrical company in Nigeria. Hubert Ogunde is regarded as the father of Nigerian theatre. As a multi-talented thespian, Ogunde's activities ignited interest in his country’s indigenous culture. Ogunde’s first folk opera, The Garden of Eden and the Throne of God, received great accolades in 1944, when it was staged. At that time, he was still a member of the Nigerian Police Force. It was produced under the patronage of an African Protestant sect, and it mixed biblical themes with the traditions of Yoruba dance-drama. Another of his works titled Strike and Hunger (performed 1946), re-enacted the general strike of 1945, as its' dramatic theme. In 1946 the name of Ogunde’s group was changed to the African Music Research Party, and in 1947 it became the Ogunde Theatre Company. Many of Ogunde’s early plays were attacks on colonialism, while those of his later works with political themes deplored inter-party strife and government corruption within Nigeria. Yoruba theatre became secularized, through his careful blending of astute political or social satire, with elements of music hall routines and slapstick. Ogunde’s most famous play, Yoruba Ronu (i.e. “Yorubas, Think!”), was performed in 1964. It was perceived as an indictment on the premier of Nigeria’s Western region at that time. The outcome was that his theatre group and its' productions were banned from the region—the first instance in post-independence Nigeria of literary censorship. The ban was lifted in 1966 by Nigeria’s new military government, and in that same year the Ogunde Dance Company was formed. Otito Koro meaning “Truth is Bitter” was performed in 1965. It was also a satirical commentary on political events in western Nigeria in 1963. An earlier play produced in 1946, The Tiger’s Empire, also marked the first time in the Yoruba theatre industry, that women would appear in a play as professional artists, in their own right. Ogunde’s technique was to sketch out the basic situation and plot, and then write down and rehearse only the songs of his plays. The dialogue was improvised, thus allowing the actors to adjust to their audience. The plays produced by his company usually reflected the prevailing political climate and interpreted for audiences the major issues and the aspirations of those in power. Apart from writing & producing several stage plays, Chief Hubert Ogunde also produced films in his indigenous language, Yoruba - but subtitled them in English. His feature-length films included Ija Ominira and Ajani Ogun, Aiye, Jaiyesinmi etc. He released three more feature-length films influenced by Yoruba mysticism. In 1990, Ogunde acted in Mister Johnson, a 1990 American drama film based on the 1939 novel by Joyce Cary, which featured British top actor, Pierce Brosnan who would later play the part of James Bond, several years down the line. Hubert Ogunde was born in Ososa in Ogun State, but died in London England in 1990. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Itunu Aribisala, a graduate of Business Management at the University of Essex, London, looks too soft to be a sharp, young entrepreneur. But her good looks are a great foil for her talents. Aribisala is one of the bright talented designers, whose clothes are being used to make a fashion statement, whenever the need arises. She is a former model, who has launched herself into the hectic world of fashion designing. Her maxim is simple. Good things do not come cheap. As the CEO of Versatile Bay, a new fashion outlet, she is out not just to add value to her clients, but to also make a definite impact in the fashion industry. "We have been able to create a niche for ourselves, and we have been able to create our own unique pieces. Our pieces are different from other designers’ pieces. Customer relation is also key to us. We have a very good relationship with our customers so they keep coming back. Our designs are unique. I actually like to work with patterns; especially floral patterns and designs because they are versatile and you can get so many designs from them and do many things with them. I like to make pieces that are versatile that you can wear in many ways; it is one outfit that can be worn in different ways. " 2 Likes |
