If atheism were true would such high levels of suicide be so prevalent among atheists? We can conclude atheists are not happy people because they are a living a lie. And like all lies they are harmful to your well being. Thus, atheists should go extinct over time as the demise of their being takes place through attrition through more and more self-destruction. It could be said the favorite hobby of atheists is suicide.

"Concerning suicide rates, this is the one indicator of societal health in which religious nations fare much better than secular nations. According to the 2003 World Health Organization's report on international male suicides rates (which compared 100 countries), of the top ten nations with the highest male suicide rates, all but one (Sri Lanka) are strongly irreligious nations with high levels of atheism. Of the bottom ten nations with the lowest male suicide rates, all are highly religious nations with statistically insignificant levels of organic atheism."

In 2004, the American Journal of Psychiatry reported the following:

“Religiously unaffiliated subjects had significantly more lifetime suicide attempts and more first-degree relatives who committed suicide than subjects who endorsed a religious affiliation. Unaffiliated subjects were younger, less often married, less often had children, and had less contact with family members. Furthermore, subjects with no religious affiliation perceived fewer reasons for living, particularly fewer moral objections to suicide. In terms of clinical characteristics, religiously unaffiliated subjects had more lifetime impulsivity, aggression, and past substance use disorder.

Religion gives people hope ( obviously false hope )

That's there is a better option after life and that we must accept our present situation and not kill our selfs ( else we miss the good things of after death )

An atheist knows this is a lie and when live becomes too hard ends it ( which is not a wise decision too)

It's simple logic you don't need a doctor to tell you why

Firstly, this should be in the religion section.....
Secondly, if the statistics are true, its probably more of a testament to the fact that most horribly depressed, suicidal types are drawn to atheism because they believe there are no redeeming qualities about life.

Most importantly, most religion does regard suicide as a mortal sin that will send you straight to Hell. Atheists obviously do not have this fear taught into them. So while the religious might WANT to commit suicide at the same rate as the non religious , the fear of eternal punishment acts as a preventive to actual action on the desire .

What this indicates is not necessarily that theists are happier, have less suicidal thoughts and better mental health, but that fear of punishment constrains theists from acting while atheists have no such constraint

Philosophically speaking, it's an interesting subject I have never paid much attention on. A quick glance at some few stats online does shows some of the less religious countries at the top. On the other hand, economic and social depression could also explain some of these countries suicides.

What does the existence or nonexistence of gawd have to do with how many people commit suicide? This IS what you mean by "if atheism were true", isn't it - i.e, if gawd really doesn't exist...

Assuming it's even true that atheists are more likely to commit suicide than theists, I would think more along the lines of many religions expressly forbidding suicide makes it less likely that theists will commit suicide. You know, fear of hell and all. Your hatred prevents you from seeing alternative explanations that fall outside your vitriol.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but it's theism, not atheism that is on the decline and more likely to become extinct.

Even as a Christian I find your hypocrisy funny. Now, empirical data are suddenly useful because it agrees with your mindset, when in actual fact the reality is more nuance than that.

Isn't it atheist that exalt reason and put a lot of stock in the empirical method and in logic. On one hand we criticise them as irrational and you then proceeded to use the same method on something that isn't so clear cut.

Get sense.

You are a joke. I am not even an atheist but I can tell when someone is incapable of a meaningful discussion. The lady you quoted actually replied to your thread as an intellectual and gave an analytical reply as to the hidden variables that you probably didn't consider and this was the best thing you could give Dollyak for her effort. This comment only shows you have the IQ of a tsetse fly and precludes any meaningful discussion from happening on this thread.
