University of Ibadan the first and the best university in Nigeria has over the years created an unfair advantage for her students using the 7.0 scale. While other universities in Nigeria make use of 5.0, UI sticks to a CGPA of 7.0 The bottom line of this is that you need a CGPA of 85% to be awarded a FIRST CLASS in UI where as 90% is required to graduate with FIRST CLASS in other universities. Let's do the calculation. UI first class grade is within 6.0 - 7.0. This means 6 over 7 is a first class However, in most Nigerian universities, one needs 4.5 - 5.0 to graduate with a first class which is 4.5/5. Let the mathematicians do the calculation 6/7 and 4/5 which is greater? 4.5/5 of course. Yet all universities have their best grade starting with 70 score. Another means of cheating other students is the fact that, UI operates a one-decimal place system while other universities use a two-decimal place. Therefore someone who has 5.96 in UI will be given a First Class as it would be calculated as 6.0 to one decimal place. But in other federal universities, someone with 4.48 will be denied a first class grade as it is to two decimal place. I think every Nigerian student should be given a level playing field. Either every school should adopt UI grading system or UI should be required to join other schools grading system. We cannot have 85% as first class CGPA in UI and have 90% as first class in other schools. 10 Likes |

OP, UI is no longer using 7 points scale. The new grading scale is now 4 points. The new grading system came into application at the beginning of 2016/2017 academic session. 4 Likes |

Even though ui no longer run the 7.0 scale grading system; you're viewing it from a bias point of view. The only advantage of the 7.0 scale is that; as a student, it's easier to maintain a first class GP using the 7.0 scale than using the 5.0 scale. But u didn't consider other grades below first class. second class upper lies frm 4.6-5.9 and second class lower: from 2.6-4.5. Now if a student scores btw 40-44 he gets 1/7, if he scores btw 45-49, he gets 2/7 if he scores btw 50-54 he gets 3/7, if he scores btw 55-59 he gets 4/7, which is even less than 3/5. Now do the maths urself; imagine a student keeps getting between 50-59 in all his courses throughout his first year will end up with a GP of 3.0 using the 5.0 scale compare to the 7.0 scale where u'll still end up between 3.0 to 4.0 which is still far from 2-1. you'll realise that a student who maintains a 3.0 gp from the 5.0 scale after his first year still stands a better chance of finishing with a 2-1 if he works harder since he needs at least 3.5 compare to a student from a sch that uses 7.0 scale who needs at least 4.6 to get a 2-1. 7 Likes |

tbabs10166: Let's analyse it again. Second class upper in UI is 4.6/7.0 which is 65.7% but on a 5.0 scale Second class upper is 3.5/5.0 which is 70% Someone with 4.40/5.0 is will be awarded second class in most Nigeria university but converting it to a 7.0 scale, he would be a first class graduate. 7.0 is same with 4.0 scale. Everything should be unified 1 Like |

enairaprof: For the record, UI has never and will never approximate a student's grade like the example you gave. Even if you have a 5.99, you will be never be awarded a First Class in UI. This is because the result is truncated after the first decimal to 5.9, which is not up to a First Class grade. 1 Like |

Dear Op. When I was in 100l, I had a cgpa of 5.87. Instead of getting 5.9, I got 5.8 instead which made me equal with someone that had 5.80. . Well, You might think someone has a better chance of getting a first class in UI than in other schools but don't you think your assumption is wrong? UI does not use the same scoring system with other schools. Scores are not calculated the same way. The grade you get for scoring between 50-60 is the same grade a UI student gets for scoring 60-64. it is not easy. 2 Likes |

This is not about supporting one university above another, if the same Nigerian system produces us, then we should be graded with the same yardstick. Check this out for clarification Level of Performance Rating (credit points per unit) •A (70-100%) – 5 •B (60-69%) – 4 •C (50-59%) – 3 •D (45-49%) – 2 •E (40-44%) – 1 •F (0-39%) – 0 ◦First Class: 4.50 and above ◦Second Class Upper: 3.50-4.49 ◦Second Class Lower: 2.50-3.49 ◦Third Class: 1.50-2.49 For 7 CGPA course unit system (UI): •A (70-100%) – 7 •A- (65-69%) – 6 *B+ (60-64%) - 5 *B (55-59%) - 4 *B- (50-54%) - 3 *C+ (45-49%) - 2 •C (40-44%) – 1 •F (0-39%) – 0 ◦First Class: 6.0 and above ◦Second Class Upper: 4.6-5.9 ◦Second Class Lower: 2.6-4.5 ◦Third Class: 1.6-2.5 ◦Pass: <1.6 For a student Name- Olawale, Musa Emeka, his Class of Grade will be affected by the above system giving the same performance? Base on my analysis below, it means it is easier to get first class using 7 course unit system than 5 course unit system giving the same performance? You can make your contribution and correct me where you think i'm wrong but please be OBJECTIVE! OLAWALE, Musa Emeka in UI: Course Unit Grade Points Apc 101 3 68 18 Pdp 102 3 67 18 Cpc 103 3 65 18 Npp 104 3 65 18 Total load unit 12 Total Number of Units 12 Total Number of Points. 72 GPA = 72/12 = 6.0 Class Grade: First Class OLAWALE, Musa Emeka in OAU: Course Unit Grade Points Apc 101 3 68 12 Pdp 102 3 67 12 Cpc 103 3 65 12 Npp 104 3 65 12 Total load unit 12 Total Number of Units 12 Total Number of Points 48 GPA = 48/12 = 4.00 Class Grade: Second Class Upper The difference is clear! 12 Likes |

enairaprof:In as much as I agree with you that it should be harmonised, ur points are not enough to prove that the 5.0 grading system places students at disadvantage than the 7.0 grading system.. a '50' score will deal a huge blow to the cgpa of a first class student in ui than in other universities.. Besides, I don't know ur emphasis on the old grading system.. ui now uses 4.0 grading system. And u also mentioned that 4.0 is the same as 7.0.. The 4.0 grading system is of disadvantage to students than both 5.0 and 7.0 grading system, especially average students. There must be significant number of As in the result of the students to come out with good second class. check http://ui.edu.ng/news/re-newly-approved-grading-system-and-minimum-units-be-registered-and-passed-students-each-level to see how to calculate.. use whatever scores u wish and tell me which is harder. The new 4.0 grading system also comes with increased average minimum units to be taken at each level.. and other criteria which makes it more cumbersome.. In the light of this, it will be fair on ur own part to create a thread (or to delete this one) to tell us how ui is being cheated by other universities using the 5.0 grading system.. 2 Likes |

Re: How University Of Ibadan Cheats Other Federal Universities In Nigeria by Nobody: 6:33am On Aug 13, 2017 |
shoyemiayodeji:Yeah, same applies to latest 5.0 scale A is 70% and above B is 60 - 69 C is 50 - 59 D is 45 - 49 F is 0 - 44 There is no more third class. UI just started the 4.0 scale with the 2016/17 fresh students. My point is that you need an overall CGPA of 85% in UI to have a first class but in other universities you need 90%. Can you imagine many intelligent students who graduated with CGPA between 85% and 90% and were awarded second class while they could have got first class grade in a school like UI. Harmonisation should be done by NUC 1 Like |

I knw it is not easy anywhere so I'm not saying your schl is shit...but, there are levels. you are using the grading system to say UI is simple..#I laff# Only the knife knows what the inside of a cocoyam is. just stop this joke anywayzzzz...comparison aint always fair. 1 Like |

Virtuoso89: Same way it's easier to have second class upper in other universities.. I won't argue on whether or not it's easy to make a first class in ui.. If anyone thinks it's easy, he should obtain utme form, ensure he gets admitted and we'll see how it'll turn out after four years. 1 Like |

enairaprof: Like I said, ur analysis is flawed. Hope u know some people who graduated with 4.4 and the likes might be on a fairly good second class upper if converted to the 7.0 scale. Have u considered if most of the 4 points they had is between 60-64?.. or the 3 points they had is between 50-54.. which if converted to the 7.0 scale will give u less grade than expected.. So it's not enough to divide 4.5 by 5.. They both have their strengths and their weaknesses.. I'm done here... 3 Likes |

This BIAS, particularly against postgraduate students coming from OTHER (African) universities and/or NON-Yoruba has been going on for MANY years in the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. They only PRETEND about it. If you ask (postgraduate) students/graduates of the University of Ibadan that came from OTHER universities, many of them will confirm what I am telling you. One major and popular thing they use in identifying and differentiating THEIR own University of Ibadan alumni/first degree holders from OUTSIDE or NON-University of Ibadan graduates is the MATRICULATION NUMBER: all THEIR Unibadan products carry Matric Numbers that begins with number "1," while OUTSIDERS or non-Unibadan (postgraduate) students carry Matric Numbers that begin with "2". Once lecturers/staff see a student's Matriculation Number that begins with "2," they QUICKLY hold a stupid BIAS against the student and begin to NEGATIVELY judge their intelligence/academic performance based on that. Records have shown that many Nigerian postgraduate students who came from OTHER universities had OFTEN outshine their so-called ONLY "best/brilliant" University of Ibadan alumni/products academically and otherwise. Thus, many lecturers and non-academic staff feel insulted and threatened like they are not good lecturers since it invariably means so if their students are not better than those coming from other universities or NON-Yoruba ethnic group. To justify this, they OFTEN score non-Unibadan or OUTSIDE students very LOW in exams but give their (dull) students/alumni BETTER (unmerited) grades and advantage. They also complement this injustice and systemic corruption by ALWAYS talking DOWN on non-Unibadan graduates or making a caricature of them in comparison to their own (dull) students in order to DEMORALIZE them (OUTSIDE students/NON-Yoruba) by making them feel TIMID or like they do not know anything and never merited their (first) good degrees. This is clearly a form of PSYCHOLOGICAL warfare and should be punished if Nigeria was an advanced society with a high rule of law. These systemic corruption and injustice are the MAIN reasons why so MANY (Yoruba) students in this part of the country, most of them DUNES, are awarded Ph.D, made professors, SAN etc., than the rest region of the country. It is because they are in CONTROL of the (educational) system, NOT because they are the most intelligent. I tell you, SO MANY of them with Ph.D. and Professorial degrees/tiles know very little or NOTHING compared to those in the Niger Delta and other areas. I and others who have lived here KNOW what we are talking about. Na DASH dem dey DASH many of dere pipul here wit dos (UNMERITED) degrees and awards. Imagine "postgraduate" students who cannot speak neither write a simple good sentence; some of them in class even talk in YORUBA when presenting seminar paper since they cannot speak in simple English. Their papers are full of many grammatical blunders and misspellings; I and others even help them to edit their works. Yet, whenever results comes out these set of (Yoruba) students ALWAYS score HIGHER - 60% and above, than many of us who are NON-Yoruba and/or NON-University of Ibadan alumni. So much injustice, corruption and so-called tribalism here. Hypocrisy of the highest order! I will NEVER relent concerning those poor seven (7) results! Let them do their usual gang up and manipulation to subvert justice and cover up their evil tracks; I will not relent. This matter may go very FAR if they do not do the right thing! Those are NOT my real scores and can NEVER be! |
