You forget He was the one who sent Jon the scroll revealing the direction the NK was traveling. So for all we know.... He might have intentionally set off those chain of events so Jon can get the Wight back to king's landing so he can rally the westerosi houses to fight with him.

he grew up in king's landing learning under a blacksmith. He quite possibly never traveled far from the city before.... And i honestly don't remember seeing snow in king's landing in the show. (I stand to be corrected though).
