But it is non verifiable Na.

Banks or should I say most that I know, don't accept nimc temporary slip as a valid means of identification.

NIMC should contact NIBSS instead of trying to exchange word with Sterling. I think they are speaking from the position of all banks. Compliance won't even allow the account be opened with that paper

I understand. NIMC simply "blackmailed" Sterling Bank.

Any bank that refuses is breaking the law and you can report the bank. They will be sanctioned accordingly

The temporary slip contains your NIN which even the card itself does not contain. So its a valid means of identification.

CBN is the regulatory body here and banking is highly regulated, everything you see banks do, is passed down from the top and any bank that doesn't comply will be heavily sanctioned.

That said, NIMC temporary slip can only be used to open a tier 1 & 2 savings account not even tier 3. And that's because CBN is particular at this time about financial inclusion. Just so no one will be left out on the basis of not having a valid means of ID.

As much as I know, NIMC temporary slip isn't verifiable for now

Permanent voters card, not the temporary one.

Do they have a portal to verify it?
There are accounts that can be opened with NIMC temp slip but it will have loads of restrictions and limits.

The highlighted is a bit funny. Lol. Don't ask me why.

Like you said, financial inclusion is being preached everywhere, so Sterling help desk should not have responded with outright NO, but should have helped spread the "inclusion" gospel.

They can bulk verify with NIMC if and when NIMC releases a web service to handle such requests. But currently there are attempts aimed at converging all identification platforms in the country such as BVN, National Driver's Licence, Permanent Voter's card and SIM registration amongst others.

Trust me Na, I'll ask why you're laughing.
So the laughter, what's amusing you?

Yeah, Sterling help desk should have polished it nicely and I don't like the way they surrendered to NIMC like they can't defend a small thing and accept that threat in a subtle way

You speak in future tense. Till then, CBN won't permit any bank in this country to accept that for common tier 3 savings account type not to talk of a current account.

BVN is easily verifiable.
National drivers license is.
Permanent voters card too.
International passport, yes.

But NIMC, not yet. No bank is ready to pay huge fine for N1 account. No, not one.

As of April 2017 the BVN & NIMC database is being merged.

Restricted web access to the database will be or might already be available at the moment like the FRSC D/L Database.

I don't think you are aware but CBN has requested that NIMC slip be accepted as a valid means of identification hence the tweets. Sterling bank has no right to reject the slip. I am aware that some banks like Ecobank have been collecting these slips as a valid means of identification for tier 3 and current accounts. Please do find out.

Yes NIMC can be verified and there is a portal available for verification. However, banks are required to pay a handsome sum to NIMC for access to this portal hence the current impasse.

NIMC is indeed the future because it is linked to the BVN. Lack of political will has stalled the project somewhat because the NIMC database could also be used for voters card easily which will spoil business for many of our politicians who will find it much harder to rig elections if voting is done using BVN

The NIMC Slip can be verified on the NIBSS portal now if you have the authorization.

Most banks now accept it, input the NIN on NIBSS verification portal, and cross-examine the necessary details.

Issue is that banks pay handsomely to have access to that portal. Most banks had rather decline, and let the onus of getting another means of ID be on the customer.

The fee is huge. I repeat, the fee is huge.

Only banks with foresight who see prospects in the onboarding new customers write the paychecks.
