These numbers are based on several factors. Infrastructure, cost of living, etc. It makes absolutely ZERO sense comparing Lagos to ANY city in the western world. It's like comparing apples and oranges. I see mention of Chicago...what a joke comparing Lagos and the Mega city like Chicago.

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) which is the research arm of The Economist Group, publishers of The Economist magazine has ranked Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos as the 2nd least livable city according to its Global livability report 2017. The ‘Centre of Excellence’ as the city is fondly described by Nigerians placed 139th in the list and only the Syrian capital, Damascus ranked lower at 140.

Melbourne, Australia is ranked as the best city to live in the world followed by the Vienna, the capital of Austria. The trio of Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary complete the top 5.

Tehran, the Iranian capital has improved the most on the report in the last 5 years, it currently ranks 127 followed by Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and Abidjan in the Ivory Coast, they are ranked 74th and 129th respectively.

The EIU rating is calculated using 5 weighted categories; Stability (25%), Healthcare 20%, Culture and Environment (25%), Education (10%) and Infrastructure (20%).

Lagos scored a total of 36 points out of 100 on the ranking compared to Melbourne which scored the highest with 97.5 points, Damascus scored the least with 30.2 points.

So, what do you think? Is this a fair assessment of Lagos?

Lagos is an extrmely dirty place, in most parts of lagos there is poor power supply, kidnappings, rituals, armed robbery, murders, lynching, road accidents etc occur every single day in good numbers in lagos. Its a very dirty and unsafe place of astronomical proportions.

if your education had any value you will know that they listed the 10 best and the 10 worst. By deduction (which should not have to be explained to a man who claims to be educated) if you were not mentioned it means your city is neither one of the best nor one of the worst.


You need to understand what patriotism means. Lagos is a horrible place to live, admitting it does not make you less patriotic but at least if you acknowledge it then maybe you can start to fix it. The 1st step to fixing a problem is acknowledging you have a problem.

A right thinking person perhaps will sit down and realise just how bad Lagos is, that all these cities are not even listed.


Many of you people who seem to think Lagos is paradise have never travelled abroad extensively. Maybe you are villagers who have just moved to Lagos. Some of us know Lagos when lagos was a nice place to live, it isnt anymore. I repeat: Lagos is a slum From Ketu to Ikoyi. no electricity, no good schools, poor healthcare, bad roads, okada, danfo, lastma, no trains, decrepit buses, morons everywhere, generator fumes, everybody trying to dupe you. These are some of the things that make for a livable city.

FYI many areas enjoy good supply of electricity, affordable housing(depending on your taste and pocket size reasonably priced food stuffs etc this is where you need to stay in Nigeria for job hunting, opportunities are much etc
