Dr. Chibugo Okoli becomes first African woman Medical Director and Director of Public Health in the UK

Dr. Chibugo Okoli (nee Onwumechili) has become the first African medical professional to be appointed to the most powerful dual position as Medical Director and Director of Public Health in the United Kingdom. UGO, as she is known to her friends and peers, became a Consultant in Public Health in the UK only a few years ago, after passing all the medical exams required of all specialist doctors. Within a record time she was sky-rocketed to this extremely powerful new position with a six figure salary in May this year, after beating several competitors and rivals to the coveted post and therefore proving herself worthy of the position to her peers who are mainly European.
Her new job puts her in a position to employ and supervise Consultants and various medical Specialists from her office base at Enfield Primary Care Trust in north London. Naturally, she is also in control of millions of dosh in her departmental budget.

Friends of Ugo will tell you that they are not in the least surprised about her astronomical achievement because she is extremely hardworking and comes from a crop of academia. Her father is Professor Cyril Agodi Onwumechili, the first Nigerian nuclear physicist and former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ife, Ile-Ife renamed Obafemi Awolowo University, and also former President of Anambra State University of Science and Technology, Enugu, Nigeria. Her brother Professor Chuka Onwumechili is Head of Department of Communications at Bowie State University wrong info: he is at Howard University, Washington DC, and another brother is a Barrister-at-law. Her mother Mrs C B Onwumechili is a retired senior civil servant and a lecturer. Dr Ugo is blessed with three boys and one girl and married to a well-known journalist turned businessman, Sir Joe Enukora Okoli, who runs a business empire in the UK and recently was a finalist for the Lifetime Achievement in Business Award established by Black Enterprise Award UK.

Dr Ugo Okoli entered the University of Nigeria Nsukka at a young age of 15, and graduated in medicine 6 years later at the age of 21. She worked at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and at the Military Hospital in Port Harcourt before joining her husband in the UK. She is blessed with three sons and one daughter. She is a very quiet and unassuming individual. You could hardly tell that she wields so much influence and authority when you meet her because of her mild mannered personality.

Dr Okoli's remarkable and enviable achievement is a good example of how Africans are making the difference in Europe and America, breaking down barriers of prejudice and discrimination through personal effort and sheer tenacity of purpose. Her success story is yet another confirmation that we Africans living in Europe and America are not all drug pushers, or 419 scammers. We have first class brains like Dr Ugo Okoli and we are helping the western world today to maintain a high standard of healthcare. Ironically, we need people like Dr Ugo Okoli back home to plan our healthcare services to compete with the Western world but experience has shown that people like her can be easily frustrated because she belongs to the crop of accomplished professionals who would not take bribes or bend the rules in order to suit any individual in a position of power. The sad fact about corruption is exactly the reason why Africa has lagged behind in development whilst her best brains are forced into academic exile, such as people like Dr Ugo Okoli.

Odinigwe Benedict Chukwukadibia Enwonwu MBE better known as Ben Enwonwu, was a Nigerian painter and sculptor. He is one of the pioneers whose career opened the way for the postcolonial proliferation and increased visibility of modern African art, and was the first Nigerian contemporary artist to win international acclaim. His work has been exhibited around the world. The Enwonwu crater on the planet Mercury is named in his honour

Education

In 1934, Enwonwu studied Fine Arts under Kenneth C. Murray at Government Colleges, Ibadan and Umuahia, 1934–37. Murray was an education officer in charge of art education in the colonial civil service and later director of antiquities.[5] Enwonwu attended Goldsmith College, London, in 1944, then continued his studies at Ruskin College, Oxford, England, from 1944 to 1946,[6] at Ashmolean College and Slade School of Fine Arts, Oxford, 1946–48, graduating with first-class honours. During their time together, Enwonwu became Murray’s assistant and was recognized as one of the most gifted and technically proficient student of the “Murray Group”. In 1937, Murray exhibited Enwonwu’s work at the Zwemmer Gallery in London [7] The period of study under Murray marked the beginning of Enwonwu’s formal education in art.[7] He took postgraduate courses in anthropology and ethnography at the University of California and Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge.

Enwonwu graduated from the Slade Art School with a diploma in Fine Art and earned honors in Sculpture. One year later, he received his Master’s of Art degree in Social Anthropology at the University College in London.[8] Nkiru Nzegwu states that the racist atmosphere he encountered during his stay in England sparked his interest in entering this program. Anthropology offered a space for the scientific study of the races, their physical and mental characteristics, customs, and social relationships.[1] In 1969, he received his Doctorate Degree from Ahmadu Bello.

Career

After working with Murray for many years, he was hired as a teacher at the Government College of Umuahia. According to Sylvester Ogbechie, author of Ben Enwonwu: The Making of an African Modernist, Murray was displeased with the university’s choice to provide Enwonwu with the same salary as the other seasoned teachers. This created a rift between mentor and mentee. Eventually Murray left Government College and Enwonwu replaced him as art teacher. He continued his work as an art teacher in other various schools, including mission school in Calabar Province (1940–41), and Edo College, Benin City (1941–43). He was art adviser to the Nigerian government from 1948. During the years following 1950, he toured and lectured in the United States, and executed many commissions as a freelance artist. From 1949 to 1954, Enwonwu held many art exhibitions within London, Lagos, Milan, New York City, Washington D.C., and Boston. During her visit to Nigeria in 1956, Queen Elizabeth II commissioned and sat for a portrait sculpture by the artist. During the Royal Society of British Artists exhibition in London of 1957, he unveiled the bronze sculpture. In 1959, Enwonwu was appointed Supervisor in the Information Service Department office in Nigeria.[4] He was a fellow of Lagos University, Lagos (1966–68), cultural advisor to the Nigeria government (1968–71), and visiting artist at the Institute of African Studies at Howard University, Washington, DC, in 1971. He was appointed the first professor of Fine Arts at the University of Ife, Ile-Ife, from 1971 to 1975. He was also art consultant to the International Secretariat, Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC) in Lagos of 1977.

He executed portraits of Nigerians as private commissions, and illustrated Amos Tutuola’s The Brave African Huntress. He maintained a studio in London and was a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute, London, and a member of Royal Academy of Arts, London.

I migrated to the US in 2011 in hopes to go to college as well as join my Dad whose been here for over 20 years now. I am a college graduate with a BA in psychology and minor is sociology. I am a very social person and throughout my interaction with friends and family both here in the US and back home in Nigeria inspire me to want to do something extraordinary! I am an entrepreneur, the founder and CEO of Africaneurs Inc.

What are your focus areas and why?
I am focused on making an impact in the lives of people who cross my path. I enjoy seeing people win and succeed in every aspect of their lives. I am focused on inspiring African based entrepreneurs so as to project their talent and creativity to the rest of the world.

How do you describe “Africaneurs” in few words?
Africaneurs is derived from the words African entrepreneurs. There are a lot of creative and talented people who I want to challenge to use their talent and skills. And I hope to achieve that in the long run.

What are some things that most people don’t know about your job?
Africaneurs is a name that throws a lot of people off, I get questions like, you mean to tell me that you are only serving Africans? Lol! But the reality is this everyone is welcome to participate in any and all of our events at the appropriate time.

The entrepreneurship world is a very changing, where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
I see Africaneurs as a huge business company with office locations in different places, rendering services to entrepreneurs all over the world (legal services, business branding etc) Hosting an annual conference for entrepreneurs and monthly retreats.

Africaneurs is now 11months old! Still a baby! But, when I started, I started off with sharing inspirational quotes on our Instagram page then Facebook page. It was challenging for me to build the social network and to find my audience. I was a senior in college hence it was challenging for me to truly balance college, work etc with Africaneurs. But, I got it now!

What are you most excited about at the moment?
I am very excited at how many people who are already inspired by the little I have done! I receive messages and emails from people saying keep up the good work and thanks for that quote really needed it and so much more. I am excited about the total number of people who are already anxious about joining the network of entrepreneurs! I am excited about a lot of things which will unfold in a short period of time!

What can you tell to young who want to start a new adventure pursuing their dreams?
I will tell them to GO FOR IT! Just go for it because the more you think about it, the more you find several reasons not to do it! But when you decide to pursue your dream, you will be amazed at how everything will fall into place! Yes, you will face some challenges but always remember that Africaneurs will be here for you to guide you and assist you with everything and anything you need to achieve success!
