John Tani Obaro is known in several circles as a consummate innovator, a visionary, and a trailblazer. He attended Baptist School, and Government Secondary School, both in Ilorin, before proceeding to Kwara State College of Technology, (now known as Kwara State Polytechnic) for a diploma. From there, he went to Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, and graduated with a second class upper degree in Mathematics and Computer Science. Two years later, Obaro got an MBA from the University of Lagos. Not yet done with acquiring knowledge, he participated in the Chief Executive Programme at the Lagos Business School (LBS) arm of the Pan-African University, Lagos, Nigeria. Obaro was also accepted into Stanford Institute for Innovation in Developing Economies, in the US - a program which "serves promising companies in developing countries by providing business training and onsite coaching." Today, he is the Founder and Chief Executive of SystemSpecs Nigeria Limited, a software architecture, fintech solutions and e-payment gateway company, (which he set up almost 25 years ago) which is now regarded as Nigeria's software flagship company. John Tani Obaro started his career with Leventis Technical, before he moved on in 1982 to United Bank of Africa (UBA) for an exciting Systems Development role. In 1984 John joined the defunct International Merchant Bank (IMB) rising to become the Head, Information Systems. In that role, Obaro led a team that implemented Nigeria’s first international banking application on a network linking Lagos and four other states. Obaro's firm has developed cutting-edge applications to make commercial and business transactions easier, in the Nigerian business world. Such solutions include HumanManagerTM, a proprietary Payroll and Human Resource Management solution, which streamlines processes related to staff management and compensation. Another of their products is RemitaTM solution, which enables easy payments and collections of funds in an efficient manner using a single inter-bank platform, by individuals and organisations in the public and private sector. When the federal government adopted HumanManagerTM software under a World Bank financed Integrated Payroll & Personnel Information System (IPPIS) project, involving 7 MDAs, over 12 billion Naira was saved over an initial 24 months period. http://www.ncs.org.ng/john-obaro/ Industry watchers say the success of that programme, probably led the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to select and eventually adopt the RemitaTM payment gateway, for the Federal Government’s Treasury Single Account (TSA) project, after a keenly competitive bid was launched. RemitaTM processes about $6 billion USD worth of transactions on a monthly basis. In October 2011, after a rigorous evaluation process by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) with support from their foreign consultants, RemitaTM an e-payment and e-collection platform owned by SystemSpecs was selected ahead of local and foreign options to provide the electronic payment technology to power the federal government’s Treasury Single Account (TSA) initiative. Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was at the time CBN governor. Former deputy governors of the CBN, Mr Tunde Lemo and Mr John Ayo, signed the contract on behalf of the Inter Departmental Committee of the central bank. https://www.newsheadlines.com.ng/leadership-newspapers/2015/12/25/tsa-and-remita-the-full-story/ John Tani Obaro has served at various times on the boards of the Ministerial Advisory Council on Information and Communication Technology. He is a Fellow of Nigeria Computer Society (NCS); an ex-member of the Governing Council of Computers Professionals (Registration Council) of Nigeria (CPN) – the highest industry practice regulatory body for ICT professionals in Nigeria. Obaro was the immediate past 1st Vice President of the Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria (ISPON). He has also served on the Governing Council of the National ICT Incubation Program - Information Technology Developer Entrepreneurship Accelerator (iDea), etc. Obaro is a fellow of the Center for African Policy Development and Research, Glasgow, Scotland. John Obaro was recently honoured with the Leadership in Technology award in recognition of its promotion of excellence, best practice and innovation at the 2016 African Achievement Awards in Scotland, and also recognised as the ICT Software Personality of the Year 2016 at the Beacon of ICT (BoICT) Award. For the BOICT award, over 1.3 million people were said to have voted in the various categories, with Obaro emerging the clear winner in ICT Personality of the year category with 874,871 votes Over the years, John Tani Obaro has received numerous indigenous and international awards for his hardwork, enterprise and expertise in the Nigerian ICT industry. The prestigious Lagos Business School (LBS) of the Pan-Atlantic University has written two case studies on Obaro's company, SystemSpecs Nigeria Limited,. 2 Likes 1 Share |

MasterChen: 1. We need to ask ourselves why Facebook CEO, visited Nigeria, stayed in Nigeria for 3 days meeting IT folks all over Nigeria, engagements with Nollywood folks and talks with the Nigerian president and leadership, but spent just a few hours in Kenya. 2. We also need to ask ourselves why Facebook CEO and his wife's first investment in African IT company went to Andela/$24 million, a Nigerian company co- founded by a Nigerian/ Iyinoluwa Aboyeji and not a single kobo investment in Kenya. 3. kenya made noise and maybe prematurely leaped ahead, but we've closed that gap and now obviously in the lead with many largest in Africa IT brands and innovations. 4. The major backbone of IT is e-commerce and so far, Nigeria's IT/e-commerce companies are in the leading with the largest revenue in Africa including job search platforms like Jobberman and so on. |

John Tani Obaro is the MD/CEO of Systemspec Nigeria Limited, an indigenous I.T firm that developed an information technology platform used by the banks, federal government and some states for e-payment, e-collection and e-payroll. In this interview, during a conference on Winning Big With E-Payment, organised by the company, Obaro spoke on the state of the e-payment industry in Nigeria, challenges being faced, and the role of RemitaTM in the future of the industry. "...... the first major challenge we had was that all our transactions were going through the switch, and we had challenges because of the volume, we were simultaneously trying to pass through the switch. This is because this switch was designed primarily, to serve individual customers who want to do one transaction, at a time. Remita Mobile App will provide individuals with a much easier way to manage their finance,” said John Obaro, SystemSpecs’ Managing Director at a ceremony held recently in Lagos where a new Remita logo was also unveiled. “Now, with Remita App, customers of various banks will experience increased convenience, as they would be able to access their various accounts, seamlessly settle bills, and stay in firm control of their finance, anytime, from anywhere, on a single app.” 1 Like |
