Forte Oil to compete with Dangote, others on acquisition of refinery ripplesnigeria.com Aug 5, 2017 1:31 PM Forte Oil to compete with Dangote, others on acquisition of refinery What looks like a healthy rivalry may soon come to play in Nigeria’s downstream oil and gas sub sector, as an indigenous oil major, Forte Oil, says it is holding talks with the Warri Refinery to form a strategic partnership for increased local output capacity. Disclosing this on Friday, Mr Akin Akinfemiwa, Forte Oil Chief Executive Officer, said though details were still being worked out, the agreement was aimed at exploring partnerships and joint ventures for local refining of petroleum products. He stated that the venture might be one that could prepare Forte Oil to eventually go deeply into refining of petroleum products to see if Africa’s top oil exporting country could refine products for local consumption in a few years to come. The Warri Refinery, initially built to supply 100,000 barrels per day (bpd) output at its inception in 1978, was in 1987 upgraded to run a bigger capacity of 150,000 bpd. Further equipped in 2000, it went for 200,000 bpd, but lack of maintenance has seen it run less than 40 per cent of its full capacity since 2016. But in May, another major oil group, Oando Plc, announced that it was having talks to work with Italian energy company, Eni, to rehabilitate the Port Harcourt refinery. Also, Africa’s richest man Aliko Dangote is building an $17 billion oil refinery with a capacity of around 650,000 bpd, planned to start operation by 2019. Nigeria has four refineries but still depends on importation of over 70 per cent of its petroleum products needs due to the poor condition of its refineries. But Minister of State, Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu recently lamented how lack of cooperation of stakeholders had stalled take off of the policy of having private investors participate in the dream to have the refineries back to full capacity. He stated that Nigeria could not afford the luxury of spending scarce resources importing fuel when the solution lies on having investors inject funds with which to refurbish the decrepit refineries. Kachikwu further said that the old refineries were having a daily domestic refining capacity of six million litres, while the daily consumption stands at 35 million. Forte Oil, which is largely owned by oil mogul, Femi Otedola, had its shares rise by 4.99 per cent on Friday to reach N60.37, giving it a market value of about $216 million. It would be recalled that the firm’s shares suffered great load shedding in 2015 and 2016 financial years, having fallen to 74 per cent and 32 per cent, respectively. 7 funds available for Nigerian entrepreneurs in 2017 by ODINAKA ANUDU & JOSEPHINE OKOJIE January 28, 2017 1:25 am Even though experts generally agree that finance is not the biggest problem facing Nigerian entrepreneurs, many of them still believe that it still ranks among the first five. Understanding the critical importance of funding to Nigerian business owners and entrepreneurs, Start-Up Digest, in its characteristic manner, has dug up some of the easy-to-get funds available in the country this year. Criteria The general criterion for accessing these funds is the capacity to present a bankable and viable business plan. The entrepreneur should be clear on where he wants to be in the near future, and must also be able to describe the market for his or her products. BoI Funds If there is anywhere entrepreneurs can get cheap or single-digit funds (often at nine percent lending rate), it’s from the Bank of Industry (BoI). This development finance institution (DFI) has been rated by many local and international agencies as one of the best managed banks in the world. The BoI has a number of funds that entrepreneurs of all levels can access. First is the Graduate Entrepreneurship Fund (GEF), which is meant for serving members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Candidates are allowed to submit their business ideas, which are then reviewed by a team of experts. The NYSC members whose ideas are marketable and bankable are then selected, trained for four weeks and then given between N500,000 and N2 million. There are also the Cottage Agro Processing (CAP) Fund for small and medium agro processors; Nolly Fund for players in the Nollywood industry, as well as Fashion Fund for designers and other players in the value chain. In fact, the bank has other matching and managed funds, including a fund for the automotive industry. Through 122 business development experts, entrepreneurs can access funds easily. It is also easy to access some of the bank’s products through its website. The bank has a N5 billion fund from Africa’s richest man Aliko Dangote to finance SMEs at a single digit rate. “We want to continue to create opportunities for Nigerian entrepreneurs and support the industrialisation efforts of the government,” said Waheed Olagunju, acting CEO and MD of BoI, at a forum in Lagos in 2016. Tony Elumelu Fund Tony Elumelu Foundation has $100 million for 10,000 African entrepreneurs. This will continue to be available for another seven to eight years. If you are in agriculture, fashion and design, light manufacturing, ICT, and solid minerals, among others, then apply for the on-going Tony Elumemu fund. You can be lucky to be one of 1,000 entrepreneurs to be shortlisted. Through the Elumelu fund, Momarr Mass Taal, the CEO of Tropingo Foods in The Gambia, who got $5,000 seed capital in 2015, turned his enterprise into a $1.2 million revenue business. GroFin Fund GroFin, a development financier, has committed over $500 million to funding Nigerian micro, small and medium business (MSMEs) across the country. The firm has five different types of fund: the Aspire Nigeria Fund, the Growth Africa Fund, the Small Growing Business Fund, the Aspire Small Business Fund and the Aspire Growth Fund. The Aspire Nigeria Fund, the Growth Africa Fund and the Small Growing Business Fund cater for all parts of Nigeria except the Niger Delta. The Aspire Small Business Fund provides a minimum of $100,000 and a maximum of $1.5 million to SMEs in Nigeria. The Aspire Small Business Fund and the Aspire Growth Fund cater for the Niger Delta. The Aspire Small Business Fund provides between $10,000 and $100,000 to small business owners in the oil-rich region, while the Aspire Growth Fund frees between $100,000 and $3 million to businesses to stimulate growth in the area. GroFin provides its funds mostly for a maximum of six years. Shell LiveWire The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited has a number of funds for young entrepreneurs, including women. Through the programme , Shell provides support, access to training, guidance, and business mentorship to young entrepreneurs and potential entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 35. The programme operates mainly in the Niger Delta region and aims to inspire, encourage and support young people to start up their own businesses through the provision of finance and training for young entrepreneurs, according to Shell. Lagos State Employment Trust Fund Lagos State has N25 billion to support SMEs. The fund is divided into two categories; micro and small businesses. Under the micro, businesses can access up to N500, 000 loans with an interest rate of five percent and a tenor of one year. For the small business category, businesses can get up to N5 million for a tenor of three years. The criteria for accessing the funds include: membership of a business organisation, which will recommend the business for the loan; Lagos State tax receipt for at least six months, and Lagos state residency card. This takes three weeks for processing. “There are various funding available to owners of small businesses. In our business organisation we have access to the government Social Intervention Fund, Lagos State Employment Trust Fund and the Bank of Industry micro lending fund,” Femi Egbesola, national president, Association of Small Business Owners (ASBON), told Start-Up Digest. Social Intervention Fund of FG A total of N6 billion was allocated under the Social Intervention Fund of the 2017 budget. The criteria for accessing the fund include membership of a business organisation. The fund is for artisans and owners of micro businesses. The artisans of business owners can only access a maximum of N100, 000 at three percent interest rate on a year tenor. Oxfam Oxfam has a number of funds for Nigerian entrepreneurs.Oxfam, an international confederation of charitable organisations focused on the alleviation of global poverty, recently disbursed €100 million to high-impact SMEs in Nigeria through Nextzon. deomelo: Lanre Okupe is also the Chairman/Chief Executive of Cornerstone Real Estate Ltd (COREL), a subsidiary of Cornerstone Construction (Nigeria) Limited (CCNL) which he established twenty-five (25) years ago. For now, Cornerstone is developing a 26-units of duplexes and terraces on a four -acre estate in the Oregun area of Lagos with the phase one already completed while the phase II is ongoing. The project is strategically located at the Ikeja end of Kudirat Abiola way, Oregun. Within the project, there are 14-units of various duplex types comprising of two-units of three-bedroom detached houses with one boys’ quarters; six- units of four-bedroom semi-detached houses with one room boys’ quarter and six-units of three-bedroom terrace houses. About a year-and-half after construction works commenced, the first phase of the Cornerstone Housing Estate in Oregun area of Lagos State has been delivered, while work has begun on the second phase. A joint venture between Cornerstone Real Estate Limited, the Dr. Oladele Ajose Family and Mutual Benefit Assurance, as well as some private investors, the project sits on five acres of land with both phases consisting of 26 housing units. Twelve units have been delivered under the first phase, which consists of 10 semi-detached and two fully detached duplexes. The second phase will feature six semi-detached and two detached units, as well as six terrace units. The Chairman, Cornerstone Real Estate Limited, Mr. Lanre Okupe, said during a tour of the estate, that the cost of the first phase was about N700m, while the combined estimated cost of the two phases was N1.4billion The portion of the estate that has been completed features tarred road network, street light, perimeter fence, electric transformer, treated water and security service, all of which will be extended to the second phase. However, the selling prices of units in the second phase will be slightly higher, according to Okupe, because of the low land nature of the sight, which will require about 26-metre deep pilling foundation. The semi-detached unit is a four-bedroom duplex with all rooms having en-suite facilities, and has a self-contained boy’s quarter attached to it. The unit features the guest room downstairs together with visitors’ bedroom, kitchen with marble top cabinets and the dining area. The remaining three bedrooms, the family lounge and balcony are located on the upper floor, which is connected to the ground floor with a network of stairs and stainless balustrade railings. According to Okupe, each duplex, sits on an approximately land area of between 350 and 400 square meters compromising of four bedrooms en-suite and the ground floor space has entrance lobby, foyer, main living room, dinning, kitchen, visitor’s toilet and en-suite guest room as other compliments. Okupe said with 30 percent down payment, the house could be purchased, while the balance is spread over 12 months. Also, the company, which has delivered over 10 residential housing estates across Lagos metropolis and won several awards, has bungalows and serviced plots for sale at its 50-acre Cornerstone Ofada Estate located within the strategic real estate development corridor of Ogun State. Cornerstone Construction Nigeria Limited has also completed a 12 units duplex in Lekki Peninsula area of Lagos. In the last 20 years, they have built estates in Allen Avenue, Ogudu, Oko Oba and Alausa, all in Lagos State. Nigeria’s foremost indigenous housing estate provider, Cornerstone Real Estate Limited, has stepped up its operations, and struck a partnership deal with the largest real estate franchise in the world, Keller Williams Realty (KW). Under this pact, Cornerstone can now buy, sell, lease or manage property for Nigerians seeking such services, in any parts of the United States while those who desire to buy, sell, manage their homes or invest in property in the US, can repose their confidence in Cornerstone. Chairman of Cornerstone, Lanre Okupe, who made the disclosure, said the deal was in right direction at the right time, which would in turn boost the nation’s real estate market as well as yield good returns to would-be clients. 2 Likes 2 Shares |
