this question has been bothering me..

in this modern day, what exactly do u do with the placenta? is it OK to leave it at the hospital?

I know in old times, they give it to the parent..in which some bury it or whatever way to prevent it from getting in "wicked people's hand"..

I've been wondering what to do with it when the time comes, cos it's not something u just wanna throw in the dustbin like that ..and burying is not really an option especially when everywhere is cemented.
can u leave it in the hospital for them to destroy and dispose it them self?

u know this is Africa.. and we are kinda kinda too religious in this part of the continent hence the question..

The hospital should dispose of it, usually by inceneration. Most people these days just let them handle it like any other body parts they have.

You can always ask for it if you wish to dispose of it as you please,

Also some people actually ingest it...... yep you read that right! There is a belief that it is high in all sorts of vitamins and minerals and prevents post partum depression.

So you can cook it, i read stirfry or casserole placenta is quite tasteee... tongue

Some others have it dried, and blended and the powder put in capsules to be ingested as a supplement.

So...... the choice is really yours.

Modified:

To all those collecting their placenta from the hospital, please be considerate in diposing it appropriately, do not taint water supply with your internal organs which will rot, spare a thought for the pour soul who may drink water directly from that river or all the bits get into the ground water.

I think your best bet is to have it burnt and the ashes can be flushed or buried.

For all saying "this is Africa", i agree, mean things happen in Naija so if you have it collected, make sure you dispose of it YOURSELF!

If your excuse is that you are not able to do so immediately after child birth, put it in your freezer if you have one . Then throw it away when you get the earliest chance. Just label it as "do-not- use" before it becomes peppersoup condiment! grin grin grin

When I gave birth to my son, the nurse gave it to my mum. My mum buried it in her garden.
I asked why the hospital won't dispose of it and they said its to avoid parents coming up with crazy stories

I never thought I'd say this but I'm finally tired of maternity leave. I want to go back to work cheesy and watch movies. On the bright side, Muslim people would soon do party, I'm counting down. Zaynie what's the venue.

cheesy cheesy!Njoy d stay while it last n don't b scared,giddybaby won't b fed ice cream dis eaarly!
Giddyperson:
lol I don't really want her to go jor. I just wish she would listen more and not be so persistent in her ways cheesy. The other day she brought bread to our bedroom at night. Hot and freshly baked and just because Giddybaby was staring at her she tried to put some in her mouth undecided cheesy. EBF is a joke to her so she stays putting things in my baby's mouth even after I've said no one should. And some of the things she wants to feed her at so not safe. Before I come back from work one day and find my baby devouring ice-cream cheesy cheesy. I don't let her do these things while I'm here but she keeps trying so I'm just scared of what she would do when I resume work and my baby is at her mercy. I sha have my 'little birds' that flash me whenever she's up to something so it won't be that bad.

Also hubby is currently out of town and usually this is my 'free from marriage duties' period but it's not working this time cuz you can't tell MIL to eat indomie or cereal cheesy She would look at you with Ahnie's Isoko eyes and your brain would reset. Recently hubby got her to go and visit another of her kids for a week so we can rest from excess church, preaching and prayers. See us breathing sighs on relief when she left. Just for the woman to come back the next day and say she prefers staying here cheesy. Even on the one day she was gone, she called me by 4:30am the next morning that I should wake up and wake hubby. Then I should read Psalm 1-4 aloud while hubby would read 6-10 then together we read 11 and pray cheesy cheesy cheesy

Congratulations dear.
May your son grow up healthy and strong, and may he bring joy to you everyday.

Don't forget to sit in a warm bath of warm (not hot) salt water as often as possible to help your perineum heal fast.

It is well with you.

Thank you so much Swt Maama. Ameen
Yes I do sit in it.
Thanks

mbanu! Cappo That is not a private hospital shocked they're not business minded at All imagine customers :Dthat they will miss cos of that delay. For all my pregnancies I used both govt and private for ANC but had my deliveries in the private and their services were top-notch . They had this extra/personal touch that I liked. And I prefer using gynaecologists( personal choice) they take the delivery, which I know I can't get in govt hospitals. Don't get me wrong the nurses and medical officers are great but it's just a personal choice.
Its well jawe, but d attitude of d private hospital DAT day really pissed me off, maybe its 'cos na Catholic hospital sha o and most of their doc works @ govt hospital so dey re available only wen off duty I guess, in all may God grant us safe delivery.

Most hospitals give the placenta to the parent( the father or who ever is NOK cos the mother will be so tired to ask). Ur husband can bury it in ur parents' or inlaw's hse depending on where ur mind accepts and endeavor it's a permanent abode n nt a rented abode. Jst pray n endeavor only u n hubby knw where the placenta will be buried and it shd b in a place where rain cannot wash it out.

Good evening Sabi mamas...

Rant time
I went for antenatal yesterday in health center and a nurse attended to me, during palpation she said my baby is in transverse and that I'm 30weeks (Hmmm me when don dey count 31/32 weeks). Then she told me to be sleeping on the floor so my baby can turn facing head down, na so I shout with all the back pains I should still sleep on the floor issokia. I left the ward and went to pay for scan and while waiting for the scan I called my cousin who's a gynea and explained everything to him, he told me not to worry and I shouldn't sleep on the floor that since the baby is on transverse she will turn on her own. I went in for the scan na I was told my baby is breech and that I'm 28wks,i just told the guy that he's not serious because four weeks ago he told me I was 26wks now he's saying I'm 28wks. I collected my scan results and walked out.

Today I went to the private clinic I registered with and I was told my baby is 32wks and she's facing down. Na so I thank my gynea and left oh. I'm seriously thinking of not going to that health center again sef. (I didn't tell my gynaecologist that I registered at the health center oh). Abeg na only me Waka come for this kind lie lie scan
