Just Thinking Out Loud About Biafra. by Josephjnr(m): 8:59pm On Aug 25, 2017
The agitation for Biafra is almost as old as Nigeria herself. Few years(7years) after independent, started asking for their own nation(Biafra). Many have died and still dying for it.I tried to actually see what importance, change or improvement this succession will bring to Biafrans,I actually see none. I wonder,is this succession really worth dying for? Will it give us or igbos better life without suffering? Will igbos have uncorruptible leaders? Are/were igbos really marginalised even just 7years of independence? Will Biafra really be the land of rising sun? I know,it might be because I am not part of them and don't know their likely gain and present pain. So I ask you(Igbo) reading this as a person,What are the major problems actualization of Biafra can solve in your life(as person) and the life of igbos at large and what growth will it bring?

Re: Just Thinking Out Loud About Biafra. by Cooly100: 9:16pm On Aug 25, 2017
Think about it...like having another country better than Ghana as your neighbour with all its glory...Currently the people of Baifra are suppressed, subjugated, excluded in scheme of things, etc...etc...Would you know why the following were introduced in Nigeria...?

1. Quota system

2. Federal character commission

3. Different Cut off marks in schools?

They are meant to suppress people who are talented...The only place easterners can show case their talent is abroad...

The word is "secession" not "succession".

Ask your self this, why did Zik, Awo and other agitate for independence even though Nigeria was part of the great British Empire?

Why did Scotland agitate for independence and get a referendum in 2014 even though they are part of Britain, the 5th richest nation on Earth?

Why did Britain leave the EU last year even though the EU is the richest single market in the world?

The answer is simple, it is called self determination. There is nothing like being in control of your land, resources and destiny.

Igbos are a tribe of over 45 million people yet the destiny of Igbos is controlled in Abuja. Why?

Gambia is just 2 million people, not even the population of Onitsha.

So why shouldnt Igbos be independent and control their land?

First, both words are correct and mean the same thing. Your point is reasonable. Not actually problem solving but taking charge of what is yours.Understood .

My major reason is because the North Lords themselves over others. They kill at the slightest provocation and get away with it.

Secondly, Nigeria belongs to a selected few not all and they pass it on to their children and the circle continues. That is why you can be arrested and detained against the rule of law.

The constitution binding us favours the rich and not the poor. Your rights as a poor man is not enshrined in the said constitution.

A fresh start for everyone will eradicate all that.

In a civil democratic country unarmed protesters are not supposed to be shot at with live ammunition, highest they use rubber bullets or water canons if the protest turns violent and becomes vandalism

I'm not sure our current Nigeria police have any ammunition that isn't live. I've never heard of any stray news that a policeman shot someone with rubber bullets before.

What I'm trying to say is that no one is supposed to die in a peaceful protest but sometimes things get out of hand, sane countries know this and are prepared for it but not Nigeria. Here one of them get shot dead and that silences only a tiny voice out of the multitude of protesters and thus make things worse

Nigeria is a wonderful country but we need a new set of leaders, these politicians hounding us up and down every few years because of elections aren't patriotic at all. If a leader isn't patriotic he can never love the people he's governing therefore the country loses focus and back slides.

So since our leaders have rigged Nigeria to their benefit some people that see decays of various degrees in every aspect of the country are now agitating for a difference. That's just the movement in a nutshell.

We all know that Nigeria will rather go to war than do things the right way but that only fuels the movement since it's a justified one.

The simple truth (taking into consideration the past 30 years) is that if by chance biafra is a reality today in the next 30 years it's economy will surpass that of Nigeria if we choose to remain with these same set of leaders who can't even be held accountable for anything they do.

Fighting and dying for biafra is like a sacrifice, a sacrifice for a better tomorrow for our kids. I know I have at least 50 more years to be on this earth and I don't want to be hearing my grandkids shouting "up nepa" as I have been doing since I was born till this very day.

What is it that Nigeria lacks? Money? Resources? Manpower? We've always had all these perks right from inception but our leaders haven't any vision on how to tap into the country's various potentials because of corruption.

I love Nigeria because it's my country but if Nigeria decides not to love me back I will disown it. Nigerians better wake up and start stoning our corrupt leaders and recalling the ones who don't know what they are doing. We need to educate the illiterate citizens that their votes are the key to moving the country forward.

I don't blame the biafrans for agitating, it's their right being exercised but it's too bad Nigeria don't play by the rules.

You typed/spoke wonderfully. The failure of Nigeria is as a result of bad leadership as you said and igbos are agitating for Biafra with hope of finding a greener pasture. So Nigeria have two choices then;make Nigeria a better place or let them go on their own terms. Thank you.

We want to grow at our own pace, not taking permission from someone in abuja who hasn't been to the east before or doesn't know how things should work in the east or who may or may not like anyone from the east, we know we can do better.
Take for example If Biafra is actualized commercial hub like aba/onistha will witness fast a rapid development that will bring them up to standard like their contemporaries in other nation. we all know the Igbo man and his high taste.
infrastructural development will be made available because every Igbo man loves to set the pace and also set a record that his successor will find it hard to overtake, this will lead to a healthy rivalry that will impact in the daily life of the mass.
N.B. the biafrans didn't defend themselves because they felt marginalized Biko, get your fact right.

Its quite clear that Nigeria government never listen to the masses, and at the moment there is not left about Nigeria that one needs to be proud off. And with the same old crop of politicians still in power Nigeria will never ever change.

Yes friend, so obvious. With all these problems and short comings of Nigeria,in all sincerity, do you think breaking Nigeria(likely in two or more) will actually resolve the situation automatically? For I believe our fathers thought so too but here we are.

We say we are marginalized, they say is a lie. We say Federal character is not reflective, they say is a lie. We say we are targeted and killed, they say is a lie. No matter what reason we give, it makes no meaning to them. ...now forget whatever reasons we may have given. The thing is, WE JUST WANT TO BE ON OUR OWN AND MANAGE OUR OWN AFFAIRS!! Simple!!!

if you look at south africa, you will see that though they have their problems the greed, corruption, religious fanatism and tribal hatred we started right from independence shows that we were either never meant to be together or we were in a haste to get independent.

A fresh start and a new constitution will definitely solve all these problems

Those who laid this Nigerian foundation did out of the fact that they believe they needed collective effort to chase out the British, Remember we also shared a country with Cameroon as well.
I think breaking into smaller units will help each and every component of Nigeria develop at it own pace and it be best if we separate along ethnic lines, that way our culture will be protected and our languages will be promoted, laws of the( customary laws) land will be made to align well with the constitution, where there will be less political power. less political power attract sincere aspirant who will via for the available political post.

That why the way and manner the old Biafra map was drawn and it constitution, if the Country was a reality from then till today Africa would have learned how a Democratic setting should look like.
in Biafra it not states but provinces, now these province can be as large as a senatorial zone in the eastern part of Nigeria, elective position where never attractive and with resource control given to each province it more of a slave and master relationship ( slave = the provincial governor) ( master =the masses). the governor general( the president) is only concerned with international affairs and security of the nation just the way the American system is been run.
