good days nairalanders, I'll be 24 on wednessday, due to Nigerian education system, I'm still in school.
I left my former school due to the fact that my course of study was not accredited. when I got another admission 2014 in my present school, I worked hard, read all night just to graduate with a good result cos my dept will employ anyone who graduate with excellent result and cos of that, ive always maintained a very high cgpa, but right now I'm not motivated about that. I've changed my thought, to own a business of my own rather than serve someone and call them boss and the business on my mind is capital intensive, a multi million naira business which by my estimate I could put it up at age 35 if I start now, now the problem is Nigerian education system wants me to be in school till 26yrs plus nysc is 27 and my school NDU was on strike last year so we lost one academic year, it seems I'll now leave nysc at age 28. God 4bid dat at age 27 I still want to depend on my parents. and now im on strike that only God knows when ill go back to school.I couldn't raise money cos the money my parents give to me is not enough to meet schooling demands and save, I told my dad to open a shop for me which someone will run it for me while I'm in school, he said no that I must go to school and focus I told my dad I want to leave school and start something else then when I established myself I'll come back to school, life is a race against time and I have goals set up for myself which I can't accomplish if I waste any more time, he didn't want me to, I told him to open a shop for me which someone will run it for me while I'm in school, he said no that I must go to school and focus, the thing is focusing on education is the last thing on my mind, I need to have something doing. please how do I convince him that I can get a degree at age 60 cos I have no interest looking for a job and I think certificate is pretty useless if you won't use it to look for a white colar job and even if you want to, job opportunity is choked in niger, but I need to do something now if I must survive.

Hmmm...try and develop ursef first,

learn a skill that you know can and will fetch u money.

look for a small job around you while you try and wait out the strike.

Try freelancing, check business section of nland for that.

Save up n continue to save up.

Just try and make ur money now...and make sure u save d bulk of it...u might not really need ur parent's consent wen u save enuf to start the business.

Just keep the hustle clean.

I just think my mind is made up on something else, and the system is so slow that I'm running outta patience, but I'm interested in education just haven't figure out how education could help me. believe me I don't know what I'll be doing with certificate.

Let me tell you a secret, if I could do it again, I would have put off going to the University for learning a trade at least two years.

u have a serious problem, the economy is bad cos we all think school is the key, the richest man didn't go to school but he is able to employ thousands of person and directly or indirectly positively affecting his country economy, if 10000nigerians employ 100 persons each, job opportunity will rise to 1000000, and 1million+ citizens will be employed, did you see how entrepreneurial activity can epp ur economy? that is not my reason though, I just wanna leave a life I always dream about but it can help you indirectly, if u understand, good, if you don't, please I'm begging u with the name of whatever u believe, please leave my mention

that's why I'm pumped up for that experience, and I won't educate you, just told you it has a lot to do with your country economy instead of shouting APC and BUHARI, you can do something else. have you wondered why people shout APC and economy but one man splashed out some cash building one of the worlds biggest refinery, and that has the capacity to employ a lot of job seeking ppl

i just stumbled on this post an dukeprince50, it's a pleasure knowing people with such zeal still exist in our Nigerian school.
Here's my suggestions;
1. Don't drop out of school. You in subsequent posts said you'll not but I need you to understand that school (as an institution) has a way of forcing many experience in you that will help you in later years.
2. Talk to people around. I know NDU is a small school and though there might not seem like it, there's alot you can do in that environment (Amassoma) and society (Bayelsa) at large and earn experience/Money while doing it.
3. Have friends of like minds. Having dreams is good but, pursuing it alone is very dangerous. This is because when you have admirers/Like minds, i they can share thoughts with you that can help you avoid some problems that goes with the dreams you've laid out for yourself. Having haters can also help you gain momentum and strength so try to have a balance between the two.
4. I don't think your parents are the ones that need talking to. Yeah, I just said it. reading through your summary/post, I figured you don't have a role model/guider you look up to/consult. Before you make any strong decisions please find one. this is important because sometimes it takes someone who's gone through an experience to show you the dangers of some decisions.

I can say more but hey, people get paid to do that kind of thing

Guy am with you on this, school is over rated abeg, but if I were you I will learn a very good skill set that I can use to raise money for my biz. An average Nigerian youth with a degree is more confused that an average trader ,that has made the economy so bad that we are all dormant doing nothing.

I hail you bro, at least you have good mindset to begin with.

Remind your dad that most of the things he uses today were invented by people who did not go to school or dropped out, yet they died helping humanity and becoming rich as a result.

Don't give up on your education, try to learn a skill or trade, perfect it over time, borrow when you know you are good to go.


School might look like a waste of time, but try use that time to achieve more.

one of the quality of an adult is ability to multitask.

I will raise it if I could, school demands is taking the little cash I have, but I get all u guys have said, I'll finish school, I don't feel like dropping out, I just felt I could come back to school anytime
