Stanbic IBTC and cordros capital offers an average of 18% interest on money market mutual fund per annum, that will give you 1.5% per month, multiply that with 2million and you will get 30,000 per month which is better than savings account and fixed deposit.

The use of 'average' confuses me. Is it the average over a one year period or 5-year period or...

More importantly, I'd like to know how they have fared historically.

The average is for this year.... The interest is not static it currently hovers around 18.5%. You can google them to know more on how they have fared historically.

I need your advice: I recently got to know about these safe investments and I'm excited at what can become of them if you add to them regularly and then use the power of compound interest. Here is my question : I have a new born that is not yet a year old. I would like to start him up on one of these investments, TB, Mutual funds or bonds. Which one should I go for?

I will recommend mutual funds for the following reasons

little amount to start
can add any amount anytime you want
it grows with the child with little or no monitoring
no maturity date till when you feel like withdrawing

Note: if you can I will advise you go for either a balanced fund or put a part in balanced funds since its long term

@ LeeCodeman, i want to assume that @ ernie4life suggested the balance fund investment because it offers a higher yield, but i strongly advise against it. For a long term investment, a steady cash flow and preservation of capital is key. I would suggest you stick with the money market fund investment for the reasons stated by @ ernie4life

Hello bisiki2,

I don't understand your point above. Please read your post again. You clearly against the ernie4life's suggestion of Balance Fund Investment because it offers a higher yield. However, you also suggested @LeeCodeman should stick with Money market Fund Investment but for what REASON stated by @ernie4life? I don't get your point there. Are you saying @LeeCodeman should go for Mutual Funds for long time investment for the child and then choose Money Market Fund under the same Mutual Funds? Can you please clarify/be more explanatory. Thank you.

Balanced Fund and Money Market Fund are investment portfolio under Mutual Fund. However, with BF there is the possibility of losing interest accrued and the principal invested is not guaranteed.
Re: Mutual Funds by ernie4life(m): 1:10pm On Aug 29, 2017
for further clarifications

Balanced funds don't guarantee capital because of its exposure to equity assets.
but the truth in equity space Always out performs money market instrument(Do your research)
in this case LeeCodeman is investing for the child which is obviously long term, balanced or a mixture of balanced funds is ideal.
investing in a balanced fund mitigates the risk of investing in equity directly while still offering returns close to what equity offers.
Now what am recommending is that he should have part of this child's funds in balanced funds to be able to take advantage of the returns,
the ratio he decides to split it between Money market fund and balanced fund is entirely up to him to decide.

To you, apparently with Money Market Fund there is 100% guarantee that investor won't lose interest accrued and the principal invested is your point, is that correct?

if you opened the account already:
then just log into the online office..
click TOP UP ..
it will direct you to select amount to add and pay with your ATM card via interswitch.

if you havent opened the account:
remeber to tick "reinvest interest"
when filling the form.

TIP: fill ALL the forms..for your convinience in the future

Just transfer money into their account and advise your account officer. That's all. Most in their vanking unit do not know so much abt the modus operandi. Always deal with their asset mgt unit. And they are very efficient. Sweet watching yr money grow everyday cheesy

They mentioned draft because the mutual fund account does not accept cash deposit. It is either bank transfer or bank draft. Tell them to refer you to their asset mgt unit and try and get the telephone number of the person for subsequent transactions.

Not even fixed income funds,

Am talking of balanced funds, that's funds that have equities, real estate and fixed income, all in one.
the risk exposure of this funds are moderate compared to pure equity based funds.

Arm discovery funds 28.50%
Investment-one Vantage Balanced Funds 24.58%
Stanbic ibtc balanced fund 18.53%

source Fman.com.ng

I checked the investment-one website. There is no indication that the Vantage Fund pays 24.58%
