The NAF has completed the airlift of 38,000kg of relief materials to Freetown, Sierra Leone, following the recent mudslide and flood, which led to the loss of several lives and properties. The relief materials were donated by the Federal Government of Nigeria towards alleviating the suffering of the people affected by mudslide and flood in Sierra Leone. The airlift, which was conducted in 5 sorties with NAF C-130 Hercules aircraft, is in partial fulfilment of the statutory responsibility of the NAF.

This is an awesome deal, and i'm very happy with it.
If you read some of the details it states that some of the software and hardware has to be declassified (Meaning that Nigeria is regarded as an ally)
PENTAGON : Approval granted
State Dept: Approval granted
Congress : Approval will be granted with Congressional visit.
Why is it taking so long:
When you buy things G2- G2
The manufacturer delivers it to you brand spanking new, there are no dodgy middlemen, your personnel are trained as the equipment are being built (Nigeria used to do this during the Shagari ERA)
It takes time to fulfill an order just with the Russians building our MI-35
and hopefully either the YAK-130 or the MIGS .
Do it the right way: you get the right equipment
Do it the wrong way : well you get what you get.

Psyops alone eviscerates our enemies. With your average working 8 hour a day loiter time in the air on a single combat patrol laced with advanced instant see and kill capability this bird will change the dynamics of the war in the north-east and strategically the balance of Air Power in the region.

By region do you mean NE Nigeria it West Africa?

Eh ehm let’s keep it realistic, these aircrafts might be unmatched for the COIN role but what does that have to do with balancing air power in the region ?

By region are you talking about Nigeria's neighbours? Tucano won't do that, JF-17 will.

one document stated that the procurement of the tucano by the Nigerian government would not in any way affect the balance of power in the region. This is a clear way of telling France and her local allies that the United State is not propping Nigeria against her francophone neighbors. we must immediately begin to move towards building an Armed Forces that would be able to defend itself against a French backed Francophone coalition. Nigeria must ensure that her Anglophone allies are strong enough to come to her aids in the event of a francophone aggression. No Anglophone Ecowas nation should be relying on aids at this time. Ships should be bought, Submarines should be built, tanks should be procured and by all means wars should be fought. grin

By region I mean Africa. West Africa is our sub-region. North-East Nigeria encompasses Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states where the Nigerian Military is currently engaged in active counter terrorism operations.

Presently the Nigerian Air Force considers itself a credible threat and deterrence and among the foremost Air Forces that currently exist in the region. But gaps exist some of which the A-29 covers. The A-29 is not only primed for COIN. It is a 4th generation aircraft effective for the ground attack role and interdiction in a low threat environment.

This procurement sees an advanced suite and weapons systems on the Embraer A-29 Super Tucano non-existent currently in sub-Saharan Africa and arguably only Egypt comes close. Integrated in a complex of systems and assets for air-superiority, air-defence, ECM/EW, early warning, C&C, targeting and strike etc and very importantly pilot skill and capacity makes the NAF far more potent and viable than previously existed bringing hitherto unchallenged and uncontested air space into contention. This alters the current balance of air power in the region.

No, by region I'm talking of Africa. Depending on which country in sub-Saharan Africa and not just west Africa the Tucano may suffice as some of these countries pose no credible threat. Some have planes but have no Air Force. Nigeria has other assets other than the JF-17 thunders to meet some of the threats that currently exist. The JF-17 thunder will be an over-kill for some of these countries.

grin Sarcasm my guess. No one is invading anyone anytime soon grin Those hard assets are on the cards anyway and slowly but surely becoming the new reality but only for strategic effect, diplomacy, statement and deterrence as the regions dominant power.

The document in question is of interest to me. Pls can you provide citation. Is this a different document from what's up here. Whose the writer and what's the motive here. An intellectual conversation would be helpful. This France thing is becoming like a conspiracy theory not that anyone turns a blind eye in Abuja. The French are known to start a war and run away for others to do the heavy lifting. Military planners always plan, contemplate and prepare for all threats especially threats to our survival as a nation.

What balance of power vis-a-vis France? There is only one hegemon in West and Central Africa and that's Nigeria not France. France presently is not a threat to Nigeria. Nigeria is of greater economic value to France than all of francophone Africa combined. Nigeria and France ain't gonna fight a direct war. It is silly to think that. For the sake of contemplation if the world suddenly goes mad and we go to war, anything short of a nuclear weapon France can't win a war with Nigeria. It will be a forever war which France can't win and can't sustain and it will happen all over west and central Africa. It won't be only here. We won't wait for them to come kill us at home. Nigeria's strategic partners also have a nuclear weapon. No one is gonna use that. That would be a war against the black man and the end of civilization as we know it. We ain't going back to slavery.

Let's stop the fuss over their deployments. They provide direct cover for their lackeys and really in essence helping us spending their money. All of the French deployment in west and central Africa is insignificant compared to Nigeria's size. With their current deployment if the president gives the go the Nigerian Army 82nd combined arms division Enugu will be in Yaounde in a fortnight drinking palm wine in Paul Biya's living room. The 1st mechanized division Kaduna will be doing the masquerade dance in Chad in 7 days. To stop or delay it they'd have to bring a division down here and we will make it their graveyard.

There will be no Francophone aggression. There will be no Anglophone aggression.

Nigeria created ECOWAS to foster unity and co-operation among the people's of west Africa who are peace loving and tolerant. ECOWAS primarily exist both for economic reasons and a mechanism to checkmate the excesses of foreign powers in our region and against the repeat of clandestine backing for secessionists like in the Biafran war.

We have the AU and the UN. By the way Nigeria will outstrip France economically in less than 25 odd years. The balance of the world will change. For now let them spend their money. They are only seeking relevance.

Jake no scaremongering here. Am saying with the full spectrum of Air assets some of which are yet to be delivered the NAF can be of contest in any air space in the region. By integration you synthesize combat roles & sorties, information sharing & analysis etc. About early warning, in today's warfare you might just be blind as radar might be your life or death. Modern Air Forces invest a lot in Air Intel assets for advantage and in that we excel far above those countries you mentioned. How do ELINT compliant aircrafts transmit co-ordinates? The Tucanos come in under cover from air-superiority jets or better still when you have gained air space control. Stand off is an option. Pls stop mentioning Morocco and Tunisia. Warfare is not only MiGs, Sukhoi's and F-16s. You won't even see some of those birds take off when we invade. Just ask the Ukraine Air Force against Russian backed rebels. Saudi Arabia and it's allies are still bombing Yemen with 4th generation jets and advanced helicopters yet the Houthi's are still holding Sanaa the capital and making mince meat of the Saudis. The Army didn't go AWOL. Artillery and Armoured forces are game changers. The infantry is still the queen of the battle. In the end who captures, secures and holds ground wins.

Doesn't matter if it was held together with a rubber-band, if it meets your needs, then it meets your need.
Nigeria won't think about spending that much money if they didn't think it fulfill what they needed it for
Sure you can always get a better of anything or something similar, but at the end of the day, you gotta settle for something, they chose this, that's their call and I'm certain they know more than we do.
