Dangote's business plan includes providing inputs for farmers to provide the required tonnes of tomatoes. Kano state govt gave the farmers extra land with irrigation. Dangote has built his plant. What is stopping production? Simple. Dangote asked govt to stop importation of tomato paste without producing a SINGLE tin. He wants a monopoly. When govt didn't answer him, he shut down the plant. Suddenly, all his outgrowers had to find alternative markets. Luckily, they did. He did it during Yaradua. Yaradua begged him, as a muslim, d price of cement in the international market, after clearing to Nigeria is like N600. Please sell at N1000. Dangote refused. Yaradua unilaterally reduced cement price to N1000. Dangote halted production in all his plants. Price of cement balooned to close to 3k. Yaradua had to back down. Next round is his refinery. Thats where he will hold us to fresh ransom. His business model is MONOPOLY. Take that away, he's a fish out of water and is ready to do anything, including cripple our economy, to maintain the status quo.

You spend a full year growing a big hectre of land, but on selling everything you cant even last for 2 months with the proceeds.

A company spends 1 yr manufacturing and selling phones, shoes, modern wears, cars, weapons, etc and smiles to the bank while paying salaries to employ others.

If we keep importing all the heavy duty vehicles we use in planting, and we hv no resources to fix them, we find out that the cost we expend on capital takes lots of yrs to cover.. But if we were to produve this heavy duty vehicles... Then the stres that the importation of same, puts on the naira will be reduced, and it will be far more affordable to farmers thereby y reducing their overhead cost and at the same time increasing their profits

This is the same idea I'm pondering on. We, Nigerians, need to produce our heavy duty machines. We should produce tractors, caterpillars, factory machines, and even common street sweeper machines, etc... Our engineers are letting us down! There is also an issue of reviving and building our steel industries because we need steel to produce heavy duty machinery. We need to bring together our mechanical and electrical engineers to build these machines! This is a shout out to all Nigerian engineers as well as investors. You have an important part to play in our economy!

You're wrong @bolded. Nothing stops an economy from agricultural and technological advancement at the same time. There's always room for both to thrive and develop an economy. It has never been strictly mutually exclusive.

post nigeria era practiced the ideal federalism like it is practiced in america. Each state generate revenue and only pay tax to the center.
Most regions finance themselves through taxing their citizens who are mostly farmers in the post independent era. and we aren't even talking of advanced mechanized farming or irrigation practice.
It's those taxes the western region funded free education, built first university in nigeria, highest skyscraper in africa, first tv station amongst others.
so if the free oil money is stopped and we revert back to each region generating money through mechanized agriculture, we would be better off. We don't have to depend on fluctuating crude oil price.
It doesn't prevent states attracting companies to invest and tax them. We had many foreign companies back then too.

If I know a processing plant where I can get a fair deal, I will farm and at the right time I will take my harvest there and collect my money. Even if the profit is small, I will manage it.

....i keep replying your post cuz u sound very educative not like many ppl who comment for reason just to comment..now bak to our topic...if for example..u start a slippers manufacturing firm in lagos..who cums for sales tax to you currently ; the fed govt ir the lagos state go..from ma research, it is both the fed and the states that get the share of tax frm the firm..the fed gets the profit/revenue tax and the states gets the income tax..now the fed send bak more than 40 percent of tax revenues frm to the states nd in total..the states gets abt 60% of the total tax...remember the fed handles national security and national administration cost..now if a state is corupt like is common in nigeria, d ppl wld still not feel the impact of govt even if dey do it the other way..but in d long run..d states gets mur dan the fed govt...so Nutin changes...another point is that the great strides attained by the the then regional govt was not because of the economic structure of nigeria then,but because the level of coruption was not much so much of the fund was channeled to development

In Western Nigeria, Govt Used to buy produce off farmers who deposit the produce with merchants, the govt fight for the best price in the intl market and then use a formula to determine how much the farmer gets and they announce price over the radio.

I disagreed with you. There is no any local competition right now in the paste business. This in itself is a monopoly for any industry in operation. Last year, the company in Lagos sent salesmen on the streets to sell their items. The one I saw was a repackaged imported paste the salesman was explaining the hardship faced to produce locally. It was this report that made me to know the company finally collapsed.

I suspect Golden Penny Foods (not confirmed) acquired the noodle industry & Golden Penny Noodle is doing well being already rooted in feeds (human & animals) I think the failure of noodles business is a fundamental operational issue.

I don't know why Bloomberg didn't see this while designing the plant for Dangote. I did a similar design in 2015 and this was my finding: taking a production capacity of 360,000 tons of tomato paste annually as a basis. Material balance revealed that 2,477,100 tons of raw tomato is required. (Raw tomato is 7 degree Brix while tomato paste is 30 degree Brix). Market survey revealed that a ton of raw tomato in the local market was 350 dollars while a ton of tomato paste was 1,300 dollars. Ignoring every other costs, annual cost of raw material for the plant was 866,974,500 dollars whereas annual income from sales of tomato paste was 702,000,000 dollars. I concluded and reported that the plant was technically sound but lacked economic viability. My recommendations were: 1. Government should intervene and subsidize the production cost of tomato for farmers who would sell the raw material to processors at subsidized rate. 2. The plant should consider producing other products like lycopene from the waste. 3. The plant should employ pinch technology to recover heat from the three effect evaporator for use in other units like sterilization and preheating.

My friend, there is now way you can just stand up and start demanding INDEPENDENCE without anything to fall back on. It doesnt make sence.

The Eastern region has to focus of organisation to proove they can be self sufficient before others can join in to ask for independence.
