After helping English Championship club Hull City get a win against Bolton on Friday, the on-loan Chelsea right-back flew out to join up with the Super Eagles at the weekend ahead of back-to-back World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon.

The two games could potentially see Nigeria extend their advantage at the top of Group B and Aina knows it would be a huge achievement to make his senior international debut if called upon.

“It was a very proud moment to get called-up by Nigeria and the prospect of representing my country for the first time is very exciting,” he said to Hull City’s official website.



“Everyone wants to play at the highest level and that’s what international level is. For me, it’s very exciting and I want to do really well.

“We’ve got an important two games against Cameroon coming up and I’m really looking forward to the whole experience.”

“It should be two good, but very tough games. They’re a physical side and will no doubt be in good spirits after winning the African Cup of Nations in February.

“As I say, it will be tough but I’m very much looking forward to both matches and hopefully playing in the Super Eagles’ colours.”

London-born Aina played for England at youth level – from Under-16s through to Under-20s – decided to switch his international allegiance in March earlier this year after spending time at a Nigerian training camp in Barnet.




“It was an introduction to it all to see what I thought of it,” he explained.

“I hadn’t played for England at any level for quite a while, and international football is something that I wanted to experience. Also, Nigeria is where my origins are.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the training camp and that was a key factor in my decision to switch.”

Daniel Amokachi could have been quoted out of context. Let's not forget he was an assistant to the late Stephen Keshi, who I personally suspected of underhand deals. Did Aluko pay to get his first call up? Has Aluko remained in the limelight all this while? we can only have 23 men or so in SE at every point in time. It's hard to set ONE standard as regards who should be in the team. Coaches have different standards. I remember Oliseh's policy of no out field players who do not play in the first tier. Let's not try to make it seem like it's solely an NFF issue. The coaches we've had over the years have fought to act without interferences from the NFF. Corruption is part of our system. But the problem we have here is that we do not have many players playing in big clubs in Europe -- indisputable stars -- so there are many grey areas when our coaches make decisions. Anyone can in fact feel hard done by.. need I mention free agent Nosa Igiebor?

What we have here is a country where everyone feels marginalized and can give you examples to buttress their claim.

Rohr happy with players’ commitment, admits selection headache

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has expressed contentment over the commitment of his players ahead of the crucial 2018 World Cup qualifying double-header against African champions Cameroon but admitted that he has a Herculean task selecting his starting XI.

Rohr is happy that the Cameroonians are coming at a time the Eagles are fully committed to establishing an unassailable lead in the pool, and on the back of Nigeria having won the last three encounters between both nations at senior level.

“It is a big match and we are fully focused and committed. The players know what it means; they need little or no reminding of how important this match is. I am happy we have almost the full house now and can concentrate on our tactics for the game,” Rohr stated.

On his squad for the encounter, the former Niger gaffer added, “We had all the players in for our first training. It was a good training, everybody was fit, no injuries and now it will be difficult for me to choose the starting XI because everybody wants to play,” he told reporters after the training in Uyo.

“But hopefully after tomorrow’s (Wednesday) training, which will be closed to journalists, I will have in my mind the team to start this important game against Cameroon.”

Rohr is hoping for a win on Friday after key players joined up with the squad on Tuesday.

“Cameroon are the champions of Africa, they did not have an easy Confederations Cup, but they play as a team. They are a good team, we also have a good team and we can beat them. It will be a physical game because Cameroon are very strong physically.

“We had a very young team in our last game (against South Africa in June), an U-23 team, but now we have our experienced players back – our captain (Mikel), our best striker (Victor Moses) and defender (Leon Balogun).”

Finidi Willing To Coach The U17s For Free

Finidi George has told Nigeria Federation Federation officials that he was prepared to coach the national Under-17 team for free if given the chance.


Finidi was one of the 59 shortlisted coaches interviewed by the NFF technical committee for vacant national teams’ posts.

“Finidi has told NFF officials he is willing to coach the U17s for free,” SCORENigeria quoted an official of the NFF.

“He has already told the technical committee he is not disturbed about the poor finances of the NFF which may cause salaries to be delayed for several months. “He said he is only driven to give something back to the country that made him and he believes he can impact what he has learnt working with age-group teams in Mallorca to make a difference with the country’s cadet team.”

Finidi ruled the Eagles right wing and Emmanuel Amuneke took care of the left wing during the country’s Golden Era.

Amuneke has since set a mark with the U17s – he won the FIFA U17 World Cup in Chile two years ago after he was assistant coach to the team who won the same competition in Abu Dhabi in 2013.

When we heard that from Finidi. I call that passion so we had to dance.....

On current form, Victor Moses is arguably our best player but he's definitely NOT our best striker. He might have scored two goals against Algeria, but that doesn't make him our best striker. Let's hope that Rohr actually do understand his players and their capabilities. Also does he know that Mikel may lack match fitness? Hopefully, the technical crew are smart enough to make Mikel pass a fitness test before they start him on Friday.

And let's hope that they have learned one or two things from our last game. I wasn't impressed with the game against South Africa. Our team was slow, lethargic, and lacked cohesion. They were too slow to react to the ball and didn't move the ball quickly either. Hence, they were unable to create any real chances. You have to move the ball quickly if you want to open up the defence.

And this may come as a surprise to most of y'all but I still haven't rated Gernot Rohr as a coach. I think we were just lucky to play a disorganized Algerian team. In fact, since he took over, out best game is the first 70 mins of the match against Zambia. Since then, I have not been impressed because the team hasn't really improved on that performance. Anyway, these two match are gonna be the acid test and I will like Rohr to prove me wrong.

Flip thorough history and check how many outstanding goalkeepers were short.
If Enyeama was taller vertically, he would have played in a bigger team. One of the reason Bolton didn't sign him from Enyimba even after impressing while at trials was his height disadvantage.
Make no mistake about it, height matters a lot when considering a goalkeeper.
