The "gun abuse" happens everywhere, even in the U.S and Europe! People get into small arguement and the next thing, muthefucker draws his gun and shoots the other. Like every other thing in life, there are Pros and Cons. While legalising Guns will allow everyone to defend himself and his family (very, very important!), it also creates easier access for those who should not have 'ordinarily', have one! It allows people who cant control thier anger to terminate human life unlawfully and it is just understandable that the more Guns you have in criculation, the more Gun-related deaths/violence you will have. Humans in general, are very predatory, by nature and giving them weapons increases that prospensity to remove adversaries, at will. Having said that, l dont think owning Guns have ever solved the problem of Crime in ANY SOCIETY. Not even in the U.S or Europe or anywhere. It only shifts the 'dynamics' to another level. 4 Likes |

bixton: I don't really know how appealing it will be to any one in Nigeria, hence the reason for bringing it up. What I know is that its appealing to me a lot. 1- beauty of Flowers on Building Walls 2- A whole new Dimension to creativity in Nigerian Architecture 3- The nature feeling that goes with it 4- the fact that flowers/plants have massive amount of varieties that can open a whole lot of possibilities in designing. I can go on and on. |

EgunMogaji: The bolded was my Thinking, but this guys that live in this houses don't seem to fear that. and that the reason why I'm curious. I'm not an Agric Graduate. or an animal student, so wouldn't know what happens in that case, but experts can help me understand. Architecture in Nigeria seems to need someone to shake off the shackles and explore. 1 Like |

skimanski: Every conceived idea is achievable only in the instance that the idea is addressed properly to an intending client. Not just flowers but every plant is a source of additional beauty to its environment. On a general note painting is the final layer on any building that gives it its complete aesthetic sense and every home owner would want to add more onto the building to increase its beauty and value. Flowers can be placed on walls but not in the manner of your uploaded pix at least not in Nigeria. Choose a pattern that will make the home owner not to get bothered about snakes, rodents, etc, etc. |

To me the idea is OK, I once lived in a building of this nature and I spent about 7yrs there, their was no case of snake, if you look at ikeja GRA. You will still find some of this house, although I believed there is a flower that do chase snake away, am not an horticulturist any expact on this field can educate us more |

skimanski: Is this bougainvillea? It used to be a big security feature in the 90s. We had it on our fence. Like everything in Nigeria, the first issue is maintenance. Do you have a gardener that will be doing regular trimming etal? Our bougainvillea eventually got so unwieldy that it brought down part of our fence. If the idea is security, not decoration, all a determined thief needs is tarpaulin. My immediate thoughts. |

EgunMogaji:You took the words out of my mouth, as a matter of principle, I don't want any flowers, trees or the like on any of my building, l have been offered several fruits, flowers etc to plant on my properties, I politely turn it down, snakes like to hide in flowers, trees, banana trees, coconut trees and green plants generally, although I also know we have reptile fumigation but I can't deal with spraying chemicals often to deter snakes, so @ Op, it is a Big NO for me, even if l buy a luxury apartment in any high brow areas in Nigeria, all trees, flowers etc already on the property must be cut down before I take ownership of it 1 Like |

skimanski: Mr. Skimanski, you're being modest here Sir. We all know here that you've unleashed the Nigerian architecture out of her bounds. There are as such as snake retardation plants. |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by bixton(m): 10:34am On Sep 02, 2017 |
skimanski: I am not criticising you. As regarding the bold. You're trying to market your idea in Nigeria and not overseas. I grew up in PHC and when I was about still in primary school in the estate where my parents are there were certain bungalows that had flowers on their walls which was as a result of flowers not tendered to that grew onto the walls and not necessarily in the instance of wall beatification and the flowers were cut down obvious to the usual reasons. We are talking about putting your idea on actual building walls and not fence wall. If your intention is to sell your idea as you have in your overseas real life pix to a client in Nigeria then I wish you good luck and when you do actually get a client who agrees to that in Nigeria be kind to put it up here too. |

snakebeat:That is the point, snakes are cunning and smart creatures, they are good at hiding in places you list expect, like you pointed out in your post, anything green attracts them, they like flowery & greener ambience and deception is their second name, on a lighter note, your moniker is enough to scare them away, I hereby recommend you plant flowers on your build, Lol, kidding with you though, I, honestly can't deal with having any kind of plants or flowers on my build, I prefer the whole place to look blank, let me see only the interlocking blocks alone, I hate to see reptiles 5 Likes |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by AngelicBeing: 2:50pm On Sep 02, 2017 |
yak:Really? I have heard about this method before, do you imply ordinary random dropping or chewing it and dropping the whitish stuff all around the place, even at that, that will be for a short term, once it rains, the bitter cola is washed off, I heard they also have good chemicals that pest company can spray either bi-weekly all over your build but that will be additional expenses, Na wao |

skimanski: Having plants like this on your house walls is, for me, an invitation to snakes or lizards or rats to get too close to us. It's an attractive look but I think, too, that when the climbers mature trespassers could use them like a ladder. These are the reasons why I'd pass. |

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Daboomb: 7:55pm On Sep 02, 2017 |
yak: Your best and PROVEN mehtod is to plant Tobacco plant (short, plant with large, hairy leaves like that) in your compound. I swear, if you see any snake within 100ft of wherever it is, come back for me. On the issue of using flowers to beautiyfy the walls, l have seen it in many places outside Nigeria but we know that the environment determines the 'kind of architecture', as they say. In foreign countries, most dont have snakes at all (too cold a weather and snakes are warm blooded and wont survive there; same reason lizards are not common over there) and where they have snakes, it is not found in urban areas as those areas are already built up and sanitised properly. They also use the climbing flowers to create a natural insulator for walls, so as to keep the inside of the house warm and conserve heat. So, aside beauty, it is very functional over there. If you compare that to Nigeria, we have warm, tropical weather where such animals can thrive and reproduce. We have dirty gutters, barren bushes and we have a penchant to throw dirt everywhere, creating a breeding ground for such rodents. The probability of having a snake (or lizards and other unwanted visitors) climbing that beautiful, hanging flower, is very high. I HATE SNAKES! I will not plant it on my walls but my compound has so many flowers and Palms. I love plants. |

Seeing all the comments here and 100% of us are afraid of snakes.. i didnt expect a whole @EgunMogaji to be adraid of snakes o.. I thought you should catch them with hands sef.. If i see snake in my house, I'm packing my things and leaving the house for the snake. Its his / her house henceforth. On a more serious note, apart from the fear of reptiles, in the long run, the fence walls weaken and eventually collapse. The picture posted by @skimanski, i think the root of the flowers (majorly climbers) are put in a basket so that it doesnt weaken walls. The ideal flower is one without deep roots. There are many ways to prevent snakes in your house. |
