Blue3k:wetin you dey talk sef? The issue here is what we have been talking about. What can nigeria manage? We can't manage our economy, quality education is non existent, we can't manage our hospitals, etc. We couldn't manage our nigeria airways, now its arik. What will the ethiopians do differently that we can't? Heck we couldn't even manage the only stadium in our nation's capital. What exactly can we manage? 1 Like |

Cashrange660: Govt has no right running private enterprise. It hardly ever works anywhere round the world and that's why things hardly ever work in this country because people believe that it's the govt job to run everything. Look at our refineries and our hospitals. 2 Likes |

Einl: First of all, the govt has no place getting involved in free enterprise in the first place. Number 2, that's not how the free market Works. This is a transaction between.ethiopian airlines and Arik. Two different companies. So abeg keep your nationalistic sentiments to yourself. 1 Like |

bodejohn: Well that's the problem inn the first place? The govt has no business nationalizing Arik air; a private business in the first place. That's a third world socialist move and it hardly works. 1 Like |

doctokwus: It's a cliche as it is the truth. Have you ever being in a developed country around the world where the govt is heavily involved in almost every aspect of things like naija? It is no wonder things hardly work in this country from refineries to hospital. Govt has no business getting involved in private enterprise. Too bad that we are just learning this. 1 Like |

davidif:China is what, private or govt run commercial and industrial giant? Qatar,Saudi Arabia and all successful Arab countries enterprises are owned and run by who? Rwanda is being touted as a model African country,a goverment run emerging market practically being managed by one man's vision and determination of purpose,Paul Kigame. The point is that enterprises run by goverment don't necessarily fail because they are goverment run per se,they do in Nigeria because of corruption and nepotism and no leader strong enough to enforce necessarily rules and sanctions. The Arik Air that failed was a pure private sector enterprise. It had been failing for long but was being propped up by propaganda and goverment connections of the owner.Almost all private sector run airlines in Nigeria are in distress. |

davidif: I do not understand the economics behind it also, but it is better to keep the company afloat than allowing it to go under. I don't usually like to site examples from foreign countries on matters like this, but you will remember that the United States gave billions of dollars to banks during the last US recession to keep them afloat. |
Re: Ethiopian Airlines Confirms Bid For Nigeria's Arik Air by davidif: 5:04pm On Sep 02, 2017 |
bodejohn: Wrong! In a free market system it's not the job of the govt to pick winners and losers, that's the job of the market. When govt get involved they distort the market and destroy market discipline because if you bail people out of a problem that they themselves caused, what will be their incentive next time to prevent it from happening uhn? It's about the principle behind it bro. If you bail this one out, what happens when Arik's competitor gets in trouble after making bad choices and they come to the govt begging for a govt bailout? Where do you draw the line? There is a reason why the govt bailouts of wall street was so incredibly unpopular back then. A lot of Americans were very angry that the govt intervened in the free market system in the first place: that smacks of what socialist countries like China or Venezuela would do. To even make matters worse, the govt had the audacity to pump money at the same banks that caused the recession in the first place (due to their recklessness) while ordinary people were loosing their jobs and houses. If that's not worthy of outrage then what is? 1 Like

doctokwus: And that's what's you are failing to understand. State run companies are inherently filled with corruption and nepotism be it in China or in Saudi Arabia. Govts put their friends, relatives, tribesmen and party members in power. This is what we call crony capitalism. not to be mistaken with true capitalism. When it comes to Arik air, the job of the govt should have been to create a business atmosphere for Arik and other private airlines to survive and flourish, not to be intervening in the market place to prop up Arik and others when it gets into trouble of its own making. Have you ever asked yourself why Virgin airlines; one of the world's brand name airlines had to pull out of Nigeria or why other airlines that have operated in Nigeria folded? Shouldn't that be what the govt should be trying to figure out in the first place instead of picking winners and losers in the airline industry? As far as i am concerned, the only time govts are to be intervening in the airline industry is to set minimum safety guidelines and to make sure they are being followed not this nonsense they are doing. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Re: Ethiopian Airlines Confirms Bid For Nigeria's Arik Air by bodejohn(m): 6:16pm On Sep 02, 2017 |
davidif: You can look at it from the angle of making sure some citizens keep their jobs. Some advance economies are a mixture of capitalism and socialism. Don't forget that the US bailout as unpopular as it might had been returned their economy to the path of growth. |
Re: Ethiopian Airlines Confirms Bid For Nigeria's Arik Air by davidif: 7:04pm On Sep 02, 2017 |
bodejohn: Well that's the reason France is a mess today. All this nonsense socialism that they have inculcated into their system that artificially tries to prop up their employment rate by making it difficult for companies to go under and also make it difficult to fire people has also made some of these companies wary of hiring people and as a result of that France has one of the highest youth unemployment rates in the western world. 2 Likes 1 Share |

davidif: I think policies like this are not usually cast in stone, what works here might not work there. It worked in the US and maybe it might just work for Arik too, it won't be good for the employees to be thrown in the already over saturated labour market. |

Re: Ethiopian Airlines Confirms Bid For Nigeria's Arik Air by davidif: 10:57pm On Sep 02, 2017 |
Cashrange660: That's part of the problem in the first place. The govt has no right to nationalize a company simply because it's in dire straits. If Arik was having trouble paying workers, let them file for bankruptcy protection shikena. Govts have no right to shield companies from the consequences of being poorly run. Their job is to make sure they create an atmosphere for companies like Arik air to prosper. If they had done this in the first place then maybe Arik would not be in its current predicament. 1 Like |
