temmitats: Yes o. Very important. Myself as well, I'm looking at schools in regions that have booming economies so that chances of getting a decent job post-grad is higher. |
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by temmitats(f): 8:46pm On Sep 01, 2017 |
gokuu:You can check out UT Austin, UM college park,If I had your scores I would have applied to UT Austin. |
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by gokuu(m): 8:49pm On Sep 01, 2017 |
temmitats: Yeah. I'm looking at UTAustin, that have a good programme and very good graduate placements, and Texas economy is booming. |

gokuu: Congrats on cracking the GRE. I see that you are pursuing a business Degree which is beautiful and I intend to some day. Most business schools now accept the GRE in lieu of the GMAT. While many schools give a hint of the GMAT scores of their current class, most don't publish that of GRE. I heard many schools are still learning how to juxtapose those two exams. But your score should translate to about 690 on GMAT. You didn't tell us your profile and the kind of leadership/work experience you already possess cos these are huge factors considered for b-school. I bet you already know that. Also, what's your discipline? STEM or other fields? As per H1B, the easier way I know is going through the OPT route. If you are in STEM, you can do that up to 3 years, and if not, you will only have 12 months. During this period, you can prove yourself in a company or network so well that you finally get a company that will be willing to go through the stress of sponsoring you. And with Trump in the WH, he is seriously trying to make the conditions more stringent. That means your skills must be in high demand to be considered. Somehow, some schools consider diversity in admissions and they have a way of mixing it. But some give out admit based on a person's merit and not on his/her demography. You can check out the website of school you are looking at. I know someone in the SGSB taking advantage of the program they have for African students and is highly competitive. So somehow they look at diversity. BTW how do you intend to fund your studies at the b-school? 2 Likes |

Congratulations Temmitats! Moving on to the next thing cannot be overemphasized!!! Choice of schools, contacting grad cords and POI, etc. Definitely, we'll get there. temmitats: |
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by DreManuel(m): 9:12pm On Sep 01, 2017 |
temmitats: Congrats! GRE is only one part considered in your application. With other solid application materials, you can make your dream school. I'm not saying this to be pollyannaish but it's possible. Someone close to a friend made Stanford for this Fall with about your score and got RA too, but has a high GPA, extracurricular and being a lady too in STEM can count in your favour. |
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by gokuu(m): 9:28pm On Sep 01, 2017 |
DreManuel:Thank you. I'm not applying to the MBA program, I'm applying to Masters in Finance program; I do not have the work exp. required to be effective in an MBA program. The MFin I'm looking at are early careers programs. They do not require any experience; in fact, they require that applicants to have no more than 3 years of work experience. As per my general profile; I graduated about 18 months ago. UG GPA: 4.85/5.00 I've done five finance internships both as an UG and post graduation and will soon complete NYSC. I've also held student leadership positions and I can wait to highlight them on my application. GRE: 324 The Program I'm applying to are actually STEM-based; they're more "quantitative finance" than "finance". 8 Likes |

gokuu: Your GPA is really strong. Sloan, though competitive could be very well within reach for you. UT Austin is highest rated for your program and Texas has PwC, KPMG and co to employ you right after. I would only tell you to consider either UCBerkeley or UCLA as they both have very great job prospects too. UVA Charlottesville is another great fit for your program and someone on here who got admitted into the school for a different program said International students with 3.7/4.0 GPA and 320+ GRE stand a great chance. Which means you do. |
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by DreManuel(m): 9:51pm On Sep 01, 2017 |
gokuu: You have a stellar GPA. That would amount to Magna cum laude or in some cases Summa Cum laude. No doubt, you will be competitive with your GPA, GRE, internships, etc. Please get solid LORs from your professors and maybe one from where you interned. It's just sad most Nigerian lecturers don't know how to write solid LORs except those that have foreign exposure. How I wish you could work for McKinsey and the likes for 2-3 years and then give Harvard Business School or Wharton a shot for the MBA. But the path you are taking now is an excellent one. Give it your best shot, you will achieve your goal. Generally, Finance and Accounting are not classified as STEM but since the one you are applying to is classified STEM, that's great. Would you like to try MIT's MFin program? You have nothing to lose but you application fee ($90?) but everything to gain if you get in. MIT does need-blind financial aid, meaning their scholarship is not by merit but need-based. So if you are good enough to get in, you are definitely going to go. I have a friend who got his MBA from SloanMIT almost FOC although he did his BS in the States. It's possible I see him tomorrow so I can ask him more details about it and give updates. You deserve the best and nothing less. 1 Like |

Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by gokuu(m): 10:03pm On Sep 01, 2017 |
DreManuel: My thoughts exactly. I have some decent lecturers tho, I just have to go and sit on top of them to get it done. That'll be my project for the next month, including first draft essays. As per STEM, see pic...

Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by DreManuel(m): 10:10pm On Sep 01, 2017 |
gokuu: Yes true. Please sit with them. If possible, write a draft for them. Your project supervisor should usually do one, and I guess you have a good rapport with him/her to be able to influence what they write. Then a top ranking faculty member should do the other. In my case, one of my professors got all his PG degrees from the MIT and he usually brags about his records - how you can't match him at MIT, prof at 36 bla bla bla, so he is a standby referee for me. You can get someone like that too. Yes, I see the picture. And I modified my comment already. MIT's MFin is one of those exceptions. DreManuel:[quote author=gokuu post=60045782] |

gokuu: Hi gokuu, I Read your previous post about you getting 162 in verbal, please can you give me some guide on how you achieved that... I did mine today and had V141 Q163... |
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by gokuu(m): 10:33pm On Sep 01, 2017 |
DreManuel: Great. I'll really appreciate that. On funding, I don't mind getting some debt but it would have to be for a school with an extremely high placement rate and decent median pay. |
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by gokuu(m): 10:38pm On Sep 01, 2017 |
Fatezee: Oh my, your Q is really good. I basically used Magoosh videos for the verbal; I didn't focus on it so much because my English is a bit decent. I may not be the best person to give advice on V as I didn't really have a coordinated strategy on that. But I think manhattan's V are quite close to the actual exam, you could gain a lot from their materials. |

@Scholastica16 what do u feel about a masters in engineering in Texas and with a gpa of 3.49/4.0 (using WES) GRE: 328 |
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by Scholastica16: 11:13am On Sep 02, 2017 |
Time2reign: Mehn..It seems the secret to a great GRE score is to call oneself Time2*insert something great* Great GRE score you have there. Texas as a whole is broad so it depends on the schools you are looking at but it is generally good for engineering courses. The question is, what is your engineering discipline and what schools are you looking at? What Master's program are you also vying for? 2 Likes |

Scholastica16: Petroleum Engineering |
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by Scholastica16: 11:57am On Sep 02, 2017 |
Time2reign: Please, forget Petroleum engineering I beg you. The report on ground based on post-schooling job prospects are not favourable which means even funding for the course would have dwindled. Even US citizens are having a hard time getting jobs with that course with massive let offs being announced every other day. Not trying to act as a harbinger of bad news but you need to hear it this point-blank to avoid stories that touch. Have you looked at Chemical, Industrial or Production engineering? 8 Likes 1 Share |

Great GRE scores flying around, congrats to gokuu,Time2reign, temmitats(kudos to your tenacity). You also have a great quant score @fatazee, you can still be accepted in some engineering programs provided you have eye-catching overall profile, better still, rewrite the test to be on a safer side. @TheZed, review your techniques, vocabulary and write more mock test. The process that ensues after GRE is the most onerous, gliding from one school's website to the other, checking faculty members, I'm extremely inundated by the process. My SOP is quite long ; I'm not sure if I'm getting it right, do I need to give brief details about the projects have done? Gurus in the house, I need some tips to go about it. Thanks |
Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by Scholastica16: 4:17pm On Sep 02, 2017 |
tizentos: Each school gives a guideline to follow in writing SOPs. Though all guidelines would have similar requirements, some others are differentiated by subtleties or nuances here and there that you should look out for. So ransack the school's website to see their SOP guidelines as it is always there. Anyways, yea, it usually makes sense to give brief details about past projects you have done and how they tie into what you are trying to do going forward. |
