Breaking – Cameroon Coach Resigns After Humiliating Loss To Super Eagles
September 2, 201701

Hugo Broos
‎Coach of the senior national team of Cameroon Hugo Broos has resigned from his role as coach of team hours after his team suffered a 0-4 drubbing in the hands of Nigeria.

Broos who lead the team to victory at the last Africa Cup of Nations admitted after the loss to Nigeria that his team chances of going to the World Cup 2018 is over, as they are currently stuck on two points as against 9 points for Nigeria.

His resignation means a new coach will be in charge of the team when they take on Nigeria on Monday in Yaounde in the reverse tie, where even a win won’t be able to breathe life into their quest to qualify for Russia 2018.

Thank You My Good man... how could I forget Ndidi? smiley.
His precision with both feet is also very strong.

Honestly... if we can get like two very good direct freekick takers in our team... then we just increased our chances of hurting teams from all over in addition to the lethal attack we have from open plays.

Look at Brazil... they boast Neymar, David Luiz, Coutinho, Willian etc when it comes to Setpieces (especially Direct freekkicks). From indirect freekicks, they boast Silva and Luiz who can provide aerial threats to nod home goals.

We can have that.... we should be utilising Nacho's bad-ass left foot the more and his super precision in shooting/curling the ball.

We ought to also utilise Ndidi's two footedness in hitting screamers with such precision and direction. Same goes for Simon Moses.

Also from indirect freekicks, we should utilise more of Balogun's and Ekong's aerial abilities to hurt teams offensively.

We can do this... I have seen where it is just a direct freekick or a corner kick that decided a game in a final. We need to heighted our chances of hurting teams from all angles of play. Then believe me, We would he almost unstoppable going forward on the world stage.

exactly bro 100%, we should seek all avenues to win games via set pieces.

Big No! this was not the same team South Africa defeated. Chikena. wink

And nope.... lolll Venue is still Nest of Champions.... we didn't tell Broos that we meant nest of where Champions are slayed too.

I keep harping on an important fact in football history... Nigeria in recent years have hardly been floored by the African champs in very important and high profile games.

In 2004 Afcon quarters... Cameroon were defending champs but we beat them 2-1 and ended their golden era then.

In 2006 Afcon quarters.... Tunisia were defending champs but we knocked them out and went on to the semis.

In 2013 Group stage game... We drew defending champs, Zambia 1-1 and went on to beat the champions of the next edition and then Africa's best team, CIV 2-1 in the quarters

In 2017 WCQ.... we know the story. History is what it is though and it is actually Match day form and "who wants it bad on the day enough" that really matters... but I love to see patterns in history sometimes.... history shows Nigeria almost always rises in the big games. Hope we can keep up this new found momentum and fire of confidence..... we have a fine team on our hands but we gotta maximise our potentials fully. Really hope we can... Hope Rohr and his crew keep up the good work.

blueto:

I am glad that the Nigerian team now has a coach that sees the importance of set-pieces and from the his matches so far, Nigeria has rarely conceded from set-pieces. Defending set-pieces was a major problem for Nigeria especially in the 2014 world cup. Nigeria conceded two goals from Argentina via set-pieces and conceded the first and demoralizing goal from France via set-pieces too from Pogba's header. The importance of scoring with set-pieces and being good at defending against it should never be undermined again. Set-pieces can keep a team in a tourney or send them parking.

My major concern with Rohr is with the way he handles substitution.

He keep on substituting likes for likes. I wasn't expecting another attack minded sub after Kelechi at least we were already winning comfortably- there was no need for Moses-Musa sub. It should've been Moses-Ebuehi which could have see us experiment Shehu in the midfield.
Mikel Agu for Mikel Obi? Essentially replacing a CAM with a CDM.

Moses-Musa was for counterattacking purposes. I have no problem with that sub as well.

At this rate we should be dominating (and hopefully we will ) the so called "small boys" and beating them into perfect submission without even having to produce a grand performance as we did yesterday.

There are teams we should not enter gear 2 or 3 for. Gear one at Its very best should beat them silly. I want the Super Eagles to have that wickedly ruthless mentality. And hopefully we are getting there with time. Rohr is German afterall... and also has french links and idiosyncrasies... Germans are merciless and disciplined to the last minute of a game. The Super Eagles are gradually trying to evolve into such.

Written by a Chelsea Fan and sportswriter from London....

Chelsea’s Victor Moses showed his quality as a winger in Nigeria win
by Ajitesh Rasgotra

Victor Moses has proven himself in the unfamiliar wingback role, but the Chelsea man reminded everyone of his quality further up the field as Nigeria demolished Cameroon.

Despite bringing in six players this summer, Antonio Conte will find it hard to juggle his squad until January. He just about has enough players to fill a matchday squad.

Fortunately for him, Victor Moses used the international break to show that he could fill in as a winger for Chelsea should injuries strike.

Moses was part of the Nigeria starting eleven as they took on Cameroon in a vital World Cup qualifier. A tough battle was expected, but Nigeria blew their opponents away, winning 4-0. Moses, and former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, were the best performers as the Super Eagles took a big step towards Russia 2018.

After spending last season playing at wingback, Moses got the nod in a more advanced role for his country. He took advantage of the freedom further up the field, hitting the back of the net and setting up one as well.

Odion Ighalo gave Nigeria the lead, but Moses messed up an easy pass that would have doubled it. However, that would be his last mistake as he would soon deliver a corner that Mikel converted.

In the second period, Nigeria were a severe threat on the counter-attack with Moses using his pace to drive them forward. Moses got Nigeria’s third with a neat right-footed finish from the edge of the box.
While his performance was incredibly important for Nigeria, it should also buoy Chelsea fans’ spirit. The club’s current wing options comprise of Eden Hazard, Pedro and Willian.

Despite initially being a winger, Moses has not really been considered an option in that role. Friday’s display, though, will remind Conte that he is ready and capable of stepping up if needed.

With Davide Zappacosta now in West London, Conte has opportunity to move Moses further up the field and start his Torino recruit. This could be an option in a big away game, for example, as Moses would provide more defensive cover in the wing position than the incumbents.

The bottom line is that Conte will need to be creative or extremely lucky to get through to January. Moses has popped up at the right time to prove that he can genuinely be an option on the wing should a dreaded injury crisis strike.

I might be biased when talking about Ighalo, pardon me for that.

He was the first to arrive at the camp, we could all see his attitude, his hunger, the way he played his heart out yday.

He's the highest paid Nigerian player out there with a pay of £200k every week, that didn't get to his head, he remained humble. The younger ones should learn from him.

Nacho, hmmmm. That boy's scoring record is something else. just a matter of time before he sets a record of his own.

I know I have seen this report dropped by one of us... but I love Colin Udoh's version more... very revealing and organised.

Nigeria can beat anyone in Africa, vows John Obi Mikel
By Colin Udoh, KweséESPN

In the aftermath of Nigeria's comprehensive rout of African champions Cameroon in World Cup qualifying on Friday, captain John Mikel Obi has vowed that the Super Eagles can beat any team in Africa if they play to their potential.

Mikel, along with four other experienced heads, returned to the team from injury to help mastermind the trouncing of their cross-border rivals and believes it's just a taste of what's to come from Gernot Rohr's side.

"The players are very intelligent players, they listen a lot and we all work together as a team," he told journalists in the post-match press conference. "If we continue playing this way and do what we are doing now, we can beat anyone in Africa."

The experienced Mikel, a veteran of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations triumph, added the Super Eagles' second goal in Uyo after setting up Odion Ighalo for the opener, and demonstrated just what an influential role he plays in Rohr's reshaped squad.

"We have a very young team. I feel I have a responsibility every time I step on the pitch to play," he continued. "This team needs experience, this team needs guidance.

"The players are good players, quick players but sometimes they need someone who can direct them, to make sure we have balance and that's what we did today.

"I will do my best, I will carry this team same as I did in the Olympics," the Tianjin TEDA midfielder continued. "I want to make sure we go to the World Cup and qualify for the Nations Cup."

Recovering from four months on the sidelines after knee surgery, Mikel said he worked hard to be ready for the game.

"I knew I had to come back as quickly as possible," the former Chelsea man added.

"I spoke to the coach even before we lost the game against South Africa.

"We are always in contact. I told him the injury was a bad injury. I told him I would do what I can to get myself ready for this game. All I needed to do was to put my head down and just 'work work work'...and that's exactly what I did.

"I'm still not hundred percent yet but I promised him I would be here for this game and that's exactly what I did. We communicate very well and the team is great."

With three more games to go, Nigeria are one of only two teams in CAF's World Cup qualifying programme - along with Tunisia -- with a hundred percent record, but Mikel has warned Eagles fans that their team aren't over the line just yet.

"It's not finished yet," the Champions League winner cautioned. "We can go to Cameroon and get a good result -- draw or a win -- and that's what we want to do."

And uhmmm... yeah... been away for very good reasons. wink Sometimes I have to be away for my work and studies' sake... and I am doing just great. smiley Thanks for the mention. You are noted too Sir.... thumbs up.

P.S: On Balogun.... I expect Awaziem to learn quickly. He is top potential and a future star in our defence. He is intelligent and hopefully will grow into another of our team's defensive Generals. He is still young and hopefully will grow and become even better.

Debutant Ikechukwu Ezenwa rises to the occasion for Nigeria
By Colin Udoh, KweséESPN

One moment of nerveless skill showed just how supremely bereft of nerves Ikechukwu Ezenwa was on his first senior A start for Nigeria in their World Cup qualifying thrashing of Cameroon on Friday.

At one point, Cameroon forward Vincent Aboubakar bore down ominously towards Ezenwa with the ball at his feet. The goalkeeper dropped a shoulder. Aboubakar went one way, Ezenwa and the ball went another...and a collective gasp ripped across the stands.

One fan in the VIP section was already on his feet cursing the debutant's misjudgement, but the FC Ifeanyi Ubah man knew exactly what he was doing, and his very next move was to clear his lines and end the visitors' threat.

The distribution wasn't quite perfect, but it was a moment that summed up the consummate ease with which the stopper had taken to the international arena...and in such a high-pressure fixture.

"I think I saw the other striker coming and I just wanted to get the ball out to our guys quickly," Ezenwa told KweseESPN. "I saw [Aboubakar] coming, and it occurred to me that if I played the ball immediately, he would block it, so I just had to shift the ball away from him."

In truth, Ezenwa was not tested much.

A poor Cameroon side barely managed two shots on target, but when he was called up - primarily for crosses and corners - he dealt with the danger impeccably.

For a keeper whose frame is not the most intimidating, Ezenwa was not at all overwhelmed by the occasion. His ball handling was strong and assured, and he only spilled one ball all game -- even that was called as foul in his favour.

It looked ominous at the start. In what looked a nervy opening for Nigeria, Balogun's short back header almost might for a nightmarish start as Aboubakar smelled blood, but Ezenwa read the danger, sprung off his line, and snuffed out the threat.

The new Nigeria goalkeeper grew in confidence from there, leaping to claim Cameroon's corner kicks, and was quick to get off his line to smother when the beleaguered visitors thought they might have had a sight of goal.

Only twice did Ezenwa appear in any kind of trouble; first when he was called upon to beat away Collins Fai's deceptive effort, and then when he was beaten at a corner and required roommate Ogenyi Onazi to clear off the line.

Carl Ikeme's unfortunate leukaemia diagnosis and Daniel Akpeyi's underwhelming performance against South Africa and subsequent injury had combined to thrust Ezenwa into the frontline, but Gernot Rohr had no hesitation naming him as the first player in his starting eleven.

The goalkeeper took the opportunity with both hands, but insisted that Friday's victory was very much a collective triumph.
"It was team effort," he continued. "The guys in front of me did a great job and as a goalkeeper, it is easier when you have good players in front of you."

Ezenwa also paid tribute to Ikeme and former captain Vincent Enyeama, who's potential return to the national side was one of the pre-match talking points.

"Ikeme is my big brother and I have learnt a lot from him. We have been chatting and he wished me good luck and gave me a few tips," Ezenwa concluded. "I have learnt a lot from him and from Vincent too.

"They helped me a lot."

At 28, Ezenwa might not have the potential to be Nigeria's next goalkeeping great, but for now, he's stepped into the breach, demonstrated his qualities in a victory that will be remembered for many years, and, with the World Cup less than a year away, appears well placed to represent the Eagles in Russia.

Often, a win of this magnitude is the enemy of analysis. Beating Cameroon will always elicit euphoria; pounding them into submission in this manner though? Orgasmic.

A good chance we see a baby explosion in exactly nine months…

I’m no gynaecologist though. What I am, very much so, is a hypochondriac. So, bear with me as you read what will follow.

My senior colleague Bode Oguntuyi has written this, and I agree with it in many ways. One might say last night was a collection of brilliant skits that, put together, lent to one wholly exhilarating experience. As an analogy, it felt like a series of sharp snake bites, each delivering doses of venom, than a suffocating constriction.

My point is that while dominance did not organically lead to goals, the goals naturally led to dominance. A good comparison would be last weekend’s game between Liverpool and Arsenal, in which the Reds’ goals were a natural extension of their overwhelming superiority.

Not to belittle the victory in any way, of course. Merely to point out that while the end justifies the means, the means can be a lot more instructive in terms of drawing lasting conclusions. If there is one thing last night’s game emphasized, it is not the cohesiveness of the team, but the importance within it of key individuals.

The system as a whole still doesn’t play well enough, especially with an Ogenyi Onazi-Wilfred Ndidi pivot, and while any team would miss three starters, there is a difference between a drop in quality and a lack of conviction.
What Nigeria lacked in the loss to South Africa was more the latter than the former, and it showed even last night.

In Leon Balogun, John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses, there is a combination of elan, leadership, experience, technical security and stardust. Any team would miss such crucial components.
And yet, for the opening 15 minutes, the Super Eagles looked like they did when Bafana came calling, short of ideas and easily flustered.

Cameroon looked dangerous, and pressed quite well. We can chalk up the jittery opening to the callowness of youth, but Elderson Echiejile and Onazi, two of the big culprits, do combine for over 80 caps though.

No, this is a team whose central mantra seems to be “hold it and try to be calm till Mikel comes and makes it alright”. He invariably does, and did, but is it a healthy way to build?

Well played, Ighalo.

I picked Moses as my man of the match, and Mikel has drawn praise (rightly so) for yet another virtuoso performance on the international stage, but Odion Ighalo produced a great performance last night. It was his best in the colours of Nigeria, and a fine example of turning aggression against the aggressor(s).

I have criticised the Changchun Yatai variously for a lack of movement (see thread). That, for me, has always been his bane with the Super Eagles: his static play makes him very predictable, and I still think there is not enough variety to him; given time to study, defenders will invariably suss him out.

Last night though, he was brilliant, and played the pair of Adolphe Teikeu and Michael Ngadeu like suckers. There is nothing worse for physical centre-backs than sudden bursts across their field of vision, and Ighalo frequently darted across them to come short toward the ball in the early stages.

Both centre-backs were swiftly booked for tracking him into deep positions, getting too tight and fouling. In a way, one should also commend referee Ghead Grisha for affording him protection immediately.

As soon as that was done, Ighalo began to threaten the defence in the opposite direction, and broke the deadlock in this fashion.

It was a complete centre-forward display. It is instructive that
he was the first foreign-based player to hit camp — hunger is the ultimate motivator.

P.S : Oh, and for the love of all things sacred, can we cut out the ‘Made in China’ jokes? They stopped being funny three years ago.
