The Pentagon notified the US Congress on 28 August that it has agreed to sell 12 Super Tucano A-29 attack and reconnaissance aircraft plus related equipment including munitions to Nigeria for USD593 million.
Nigeria has been seeking agreement from the United States since 2015, specifically for use against Boko Haram militants, but the sale was put on hold by the Barack Obama administration due to concerns over the Nigerian military's human rights record. President Donald Trump signalled his support for the sale in a February phone call to his Nigerian counterpart Muhammadu Buhari, and the deal has moved forward STEADILY . DOES ANY ONE HAVE IDEAL WHICH RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT?

If this was real and they had somehow threatened SA's "impudents". I'd be the first to troll them... In fact, I'll derive much fun as possible from this and see how Kim blah blah reacts.... But since I'm not important in world affairs, I'll keep dreaming grin

From the previous SADC exercise in the land of the cousins, Exercise Golfinho.
FACTOID: apart from SA, Namibia has hosted more SADC exercises than all the other SADC countries.
I keep banging on about this, but some day SADC will have to go the NATO/EU route and start pooling military resources. More integration and dwindling budgets will simply demand it. This is the structure I see:
1) a SADC Naval Atlantic Command comprising SA, Namibia and Angola with Walvis Bay as the HQ;
2) a SADC Naval Indian Command comprising SA, Mozambique, Mauritius, Seychelles, Madagascar and Tanzania with Dar es Salaam as the HQ;
3) a SADC Jungle Warfare School in the DRC; a Desert Warfare School in Namibia;
4) permanent SADC forward bases in Cabinda, DRC, Tanzania and Madagascar;
5) some form of pooled sealift run jointly by the 2 Naval Commands; and some form of pooled heavy airlift basing out of Botswana (oh the tussle whether this should be A400M or IL-76! grin).
Zimbabwe is hosting the SADC regional peacekeeping training centre, while Botswana has offered 19 hectares of land at Rasesa for a SADC logistics depot. Some at our JOps are unhappy about the choice, preferring Ndola/Kasama in Zambia, mainly for 2 reasons:
- proximity to the DRC, which is the main source of instability within the SADC region; and
- existing rail links for most SADC countries and the current extension of the runway to 4000m+.

Don't count Botswana in, they don't like that game of playing well with others. Their purchase of SAM systems suggest their fear of being attacked by who else other than South Africa.

Botswana plays very well with others within the SADC military ambit. There is absolutely no reason they should do so politically. I'm a huge fan of their independent ways particularly when the others want to shield anti-democratic behaviours and tendencies.
They also have unresolved land issues with Namibia, and a belligerent Zimbabwe which has threatened them when they called out Mugabe.
Or are now to ascribe "fear of SA" whenever any of our neighbours acquires self-defence material?

Zimbabwe.

No country attached to our borders will wage a war with another without Pretoria's blessings.... and besides, Zim has a crumbling military there won't be attacking anyone not even in the next 2 decades as long as Zano PF is in power (because the economy will keep struggling).

So, theoretically only SA is a risk especially after that Julius Malema threat to invade Botswana when he was with the ANCYL.

Are you aware that Botswana now fields a more sophisticated SAM system than South Africa? We never bothered funding the Umkhonto ground based SAM because none of our neighbors posed as an eminent threat. So Botswana wouldn't bother unless it somehow feels threatened by a neighbor that has air striking capabilities ie, South Africa.

As for the unresolved land issues, Swaziland has one with South Africa, apparently Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Gauteng belong to them. grin

Your argument is analogous to saying Canada's defence acquisistions are because they feel threatened by the US!
No planner in the BDF is so delusional they think they could ever withstand the SANDF. Besides, there are many more non-military tools at SA's disposal to bring Botswana to her knees. Like sealing the border and blocking her imports and exports. Or withholding the Customs Union funds which constitute 30% of Botswana's revenue.

Here's a scenario: let's say that madman in Ndjamena hadn't stopped at installing Seleka in CAR but had gone all the way to grabbing Eqautor and North Kivu provinces in the DRC(not so implausible as back in the 90s one of the DRC rebel movements had Chadian support). Kinshasa invokes the mutual defence clause in the SADC charter and Botswana deploys along with the rest. That MICA system then comes into play.
That's just how planners in professional militaries think.

Well we have pretty good relations with Botswana on the other hand Botswana and Zimbabwe have a near terrible relationship......I highly doubt that they purchased there SAMs for a SAn threat..........In all honesty we wouldn't even need an Air force to invade Botswana, Gaborone is less than an hour away from our border, will literally just drive there!!

Honestly, Lesotho doesn't need the military.. If you're completely surrounded by SA you're 100% safe unless you think SA is gonna attack you of which your military won't help.

The solution is to dissolve the military, form a border/rural patrol security force then redirect all the personnel to that force.

That applies to Swaziland as well, the military is nothing more than King Mswati's personal security guard.
