A team who can not score a goal in 3 matches have no business in world cup

Tournaments are mostly won by defence. I'm not trying to play down the importance of attack tho. Any team that can qualify from the group of four no be yeye team

The most important thing for Nigeria is the fitness of Moses, Balogun and Mikel this next month. As long as we are fit and do not underrate Zambia, it will be men vs boys.

I will say improvise. Shehu has cemented a place at RB for now. If there is anything that needs to be changed quickly, it's our LB. let Aina replace Uwa. That's a more realistic demand, as oftentimes we don't fix what is not broken. eventually, maybe before the WC Aina could displace Shehu at RB, hopefully when we have secured Torunarigha, Ojo etc

Nobody should be of the view that your place is cemented unless you are truly world class. And honestly we really do not have many players if any that are truly world class at the moment.

To improve there must be continous competition for each position. Shehu has had two games has done very good the question is can Aina do better. It should not be we are satisfied that position is totally covered.
Let's not enthrone mediocrity, excellence a big YES.

Martins Obafemi is also doing well.

Why is Martins not being considered
Is he older than Ribiere, Defoe, Alves, Evra and Christiano Ronaldo, etc, etc

But we find it very easy to consider players who are playing in back water mediocre leagues. Who have not attained anywhere near the level players like Aluko, Martins, and others have attained. Based on assumed potential or past youthful glories of sometimes even 3 years ago.

No New Names In Super Eagles List For Win Or Burst Clash Against Zambia In Uyo – Rohr Hints

Ahead of Nigeria’s all important World Cup 2018 Qualifiers clash against Zambia in Uyo, coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Gernot Rohr has suggested he will maintain the squad that prosecuted the back to back games against Cameroon.

Nigeria need a win against Zambia to seal their spot in the World Cup in Russia, thanks to the four points picked up from the double header clash against Cameroon in Uyo and Yaounde respectively.

Coach Rohr who says he need his ward to finish the job of qualifying for the World Cup when they meet Zambia on the 7th of October in Uyo has hinted he will stick with the squad he worked with in the last two games.

He however left the door open for Arsenal ace Alex Iwobi who missed the game through injury to return back to the squad, if he returns to full match fitness before the game next month.

” We will work with the same set of players for the game against Zambia. Maybe Iwobi will return to the squad if he is fully fit. But for now the players called up for the Cameroon games are same players we plan to call for the game against Zambia”, Rohr exclusively told Owngoalnigeria.com.

Enyeama’s Recall Draws Near, Back In Training With Lille, Endorses “Oyibo Wall”

Former goalkeeper and captain of the senior national team of Nigeria Vincent Enyeama is close to staging a comeback to the team after returning back to training.

Enyeama who has been on exile from the team for two years agreed to return back to the team according to coach Gernot Rohr, but an injury which required surgery ruled him out of the recently concluded back to back games against Cameroon.

Rohr cited Enyeama’s injury as the reason why he wasn’t in the squad for the games, but the goalkeeper is now back in training and even posted video of himself doing some works with the ball.

Deemed surplus to requirements by new coach of Lille Marcelo Bielsa the Nigerian also need to sort out his club future before his return can be made according to coa‎ch Rohr.

Enyeama is however keeping in touch with the progress of Nigeria at the ongoing World Cup 2018 Qualifiers, where they are one win away from qualifying for the‎ World Cup in Russia.

34 year old Enyeama also gave his backing to the much talked about central defence partnership of Leon Balogun and William Troost-Ekong by retweeting a post from Ekong with the nickname given to the pair “OyiboWall”.

Tammy Abraham Once Played On The Same Chelsea Youth Team As Mbappe

The very promising Nigerian striker Tammy Abraham once played on the same Chelsea youth team as Monaco teen sensation Kylian Mbappé, according to various reports in the foreign press.

The electronic edition of The Telegraph says the new Paris Saint-Germain big-money signing trained with Chelsea as a talented 11-year-old and partnered Tammy Abraham in attack as the Blues U12 team thrashed Charlton Athletic 8-0 in a friendly.

''We played against Charlton, I think, and we won maybe seven or eight nil,'' Mbappe told the British newspaper.

''I also got to meet some of the first-team players – (Didier) Drogba, (Florent) Malouda – the French-speaking ones and took some pictures with them.''

Tammy Abraham joined Chelsea at U8 level and progressed through the ranks before making his first team debut against Liverpool on May 11, 2016, after coming on to replace Bertrand Traoré in the 74th minute.

Fresh from representing the Young Lions at the 2017 European U21 Championship, Abraham penned a new long-term contract with Chelsea before he was farmed out on a season-long loan to Swansea City.

“Christian (Bassagog) was not in charge because he has to change his way of playing. It’s very predictable. If I were 40 years younger, he would never go past me with the ball because everyone knows what he’s going to do. At the AFCON, he emerged MVP because several teams did not know Bassogog. But coaches now know what they need to do when playing against him. It’s very easy to mark Bassagog out. Just put a defender who’s as fast as him and he’s in trouble. So if Christian becomes aware that he will not always take the ball and run, he has to vary his game and he will become a better player,”

Hugo Broos..

Should a coach be saying this about his player in public?

I don't think you understand completely what joebie is trying to say. Joebie is looking at the big picture, the team picture. Aina is good as both LB and RB. Presently, we're more pressingly in need of a left back than a right back. If Aina displaces shehu, it only solves the problem of our right back, we still have to search for a good left back. On the other hand, if we allow shehu to continue as RB and switch Aina to the LB position, we would effectively solve both problems, killing two birds with one stone. It's smart actually.

Nigeria: Super Eagles' Fringe Players to Face Algeria After Zambia Clash

By Christian Okpara
The Super Eagles' technical crew will give players, who have not had the opportunity to play for the country in the on-going Russia 2018 World Cup qualifying series to feature in the last game against Algeria. That is, if the Eagles beat Zambia next month to confirm Nigeria's qualification for the Copa du Mondo.

Zambia surprised bookmakers on Tuesday when they went to Algiers to beat Algeria in their matchday four game. That victory took Zambia seven points, three lower than Nigeria, who will host them in Uyo on October 7.

A win in that game guarantees Nigeria the ticket to Russia 2018 World Cup. The Guardian learnt that fringe players, including home-based stars and some based in Europe were originally billed to take on Zambia until the Chipolopolo took the decision out Coach Gernot Rohr's hands in Algiers.

One of the officials, who pleaded anonymity, said in Yaoundé on Monday that the qualifiers also serves as preparation for the World Cup, adding that it has given the coaches the opportunity to assess the mentality of the players that have featured in the series.

"The coaches know what the players in the CHAN team can do, but they also want to see them in grade A games. "If as expected We beat Zambia to qualify for the World Cup, there will be no need to play against Algeria with the players in the main team," he said.

I don't agree with this, the last match against algeria even if we win in uyo, should be used as a warm up game for team blending ahead of the world cup which is less than a year away. It can also be used to boost our FIFA rankings so we can get Grade A friendly games ahead of the world cup. NFF ought to know better nah

Operation Beat Nigeria In Uyo – Zambia To Hold Training Camp In Europe

Zambia are planning to hold a training camp in Europe ahead of their upcoming World Cup 2018 Qualifiers tie against Nigeria in Uyo.

The Chipolopolo gave themselves a strong chance of overhauling group leaders Nigeria after beating Algeria 1-0 away in Algiers, and they are not leaving any stone unturned in their bid to beat Nigeria in Uyo next month.

Coach of the Zambian team Wedson Nyirenda revealed part of their plans for the game against Nigeria, same team that defeated them in Ndola 1-2 in the reverse tie will be a camp in Europe.

“We have been talking to the Football Association of Zambia [FAZ] and they are also interested in camping the team outside the country and if that comes it will be a bonus to the players,” Nyirenda said upon arrival in Zambia from Algeria.

Speaking in same vein Andrew Kamanga who is the president of the Football Association in Zambia said it will be wise for the players to train in Europe ahead of the October 7th game in Uyo, as most of them are based in Europe.

“As you know some of the players are already in Europe, they didn’t come with us they have already gone back and we may see it fit to camp the team abroad so that it is easier to prepare the team adequately,” Kamanga said.

Nigerian-Born Winger Poised To Debut For Liverpool In UEFA Youth League

Liverpool's roster for the group stage of the UEFA Youth League has been announced, with a player of Nigerian descent included in the squad list.

It is all but confirmed that Ibadan-born winger Bobby Adekanye will make his debut in the prestigious youth competition, as he has been named to the 40-player squad list.

An analysis of the Reds roster revealed that the names of four goalkeepers, eleven defenders, eighteen midfielders and seven attackers were submitted to the governing body of football in Europe.

Born February 14, 1999, Bobby Adekanye is eligible to participate in the Youth League as he was born after January 1, 1999, though he has been promoted to Liverpool U23 squad with effect from the 2017-2018 season.

The Netherlands youth international can also represent Liverpool in the Champions League having spent more than two years at Anfield, but will no longer be eligible to play in the UEFA Youth League if he makes three appearances for the first team in the Champions League or Europa League this season.

A product of the youth team of Barcelona, Adekanye joined Liverpool in July 2015 from PSV Eindhoven.

Iwobi May Return Against Bournemouth, Wenger Hints

www.nairaland.com/attachments/5929833_iwobi_jpeg0e0a208bf06ef21ea6a566ff1d8da08e

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hinted that Alex Iwobi could return to the match day squad when his side host Bournemouth on game week four in the English Premier League on Saturday, September 9.

The Nigeria international has not played competitively since August 19 when he lasted 11 minutes on the turf against Stoke City, and it later emerged that the Hale End Academy product suffered an injury.

Providing an update on the injured players in the squad, Wenger told reporters : ''Sanchez, Ospina and Ramsey are coming back today.

''At the moment we have no injuries, everyone is coming back quite well.

''Wilshere is getting stronger every day.''

Iwobi was in London while the Super Eagles were taking on Cameroon in Uyo and Yaounde in the World Cup qualifiers after withdrawing from the squad due to injury.

The 21-year-old will make his 62nd appearance for Arsenal's first team if he features against the Cherries at the Emirates Stadium.

Done Deal : 2010 World Cup Star Kalu Uche Joins Delhi Dynamos FC

Indian Super League outfit Delhi Dynamos FC have announced the signing of Nigeria international Kalu Uche ahead of the Indian Super League season.

Uche has played in India before for FC Pune City, for whom he scored 4 goals in 11 appearances back in 2015.

The experienced striker or attacking midfielder returned for a third stint at Almeria in February 2017, and is joining Delhi Dynamos FC as a free agent, having run out of contract at the Spanish club.

''I am happy to welcome Kalu to the Delhi Dynamos squad this year,'' Delhi Dynamos Director Rohan Sharma said to the club's official website, delhidynamos.com.

''Kalu brings a lot of experience to the team having played for Nigerian national team, has had over 175 appearances for Almeria, as well as having played in the ISL in 2015.

''He will bring toughness both mentally and physically to the team and I look forward to seeing him make a mark on the ISL this year.''

The Enyimba product has also defended the colours of Espanyol, Wisla Krakow, Bordeaux, Neuchâtel Xamax, Kasımpaşa, El Jaish, Al Rayyan and Levante.

What happened to us against South Africa is what will happen to Zambia. They will assembly U 20 players against us just as we assembled our U 23 players against South Africa. They can and should train for two weeks abroad or even on another planet just as we camped for almost two weeks in France before the SA game. They will brag and hype up the youthfulness of their team just as we did against South Africa.

Finally, they will come here and get beaten ever so soundly. Till then let them enjoy the seductive mix of hope and desire. October 7 they will not be able to cry just as many of us were unable to cry after that galling defeat but football will be bitter for them just as it was for most of us following the SA defeat.

Super Eagles Striker Samuel Flies Out To Perm With CSKA Moscow Squad

Aaron Samuel has returned to the Russian capital after he was called up to represent Nigeria in the recent World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon.

The Super Eagles striker has been named in CSKA Moscow's 19-man squad for Friday evening's Russian Premier League match between the Muscovites and Amkar Perm.

Aaron Samuel flew to Perm from Sheremetyevo Airport on Thursday, and will make his sixth appearance in the Russian Premier League if he is selected by manager Goncharenko.

Russian-born defender of Nigerian descent Brian Idowu and Fegor Ogude are on the books of Amkar Perm, but the Nigeria international has yet to feature for the club this season.

Samuel did not travel with the Super Eagles to Yaounde for their match day four fixture against Cameroon.

Hull City Manager Slutsky: Musa Was Close To Joining Us

Hull City manager Leonid Slutsky on Thursday confirmed that the Championship side were interested in signing Leicester and Super Eagles forward, Ahmed Musa, before the summer transfer window closed on August 31, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

Slutsky was Musa’s coach at his former club, CSKA Moscow of Russia, and conceded that an impending move for the speedy wide man was not achieved as the Nigerian seemingly wanted to have another opportunity to impress at Leicester.

“We came very close to Musa,” Slutsky told the Hull Daily Mail.

“But not each decision depends on me or the club. I think maybe he wants to prove himself at Leicester and he needs one more attempt.

“The final decision was at midday on deadline day and we didn’t have a chance to change Musa for another option.”

Musa was in Nigeria’s squad that grabbed four points at the expense of Cameroon in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers recently.

I am not down with the Shehu Abdullahi cementing the Right Back position due to his good performances. What is important is for the team to keep improving. If Aina can offer more on the right, I say we give him the chance. However, with Echiejile being so poor on the left back position, I feel we will gain more playing Ola Aina there than dropping Shehu.

This will improve the team while we keep searching for a quality left back.

Right. The question stems from komekn's reluctance to accept that significant improvements have been made with our youth football with regards to players declaration of their real ages. The era of football age-cheating at an institutional scale is gone. I actually believe that the authorities are even over-correcting by disqualifying legitimate players and declaring them "too old" as posted a couple of weeks ago on this thread

New Super Eagle Ola Aina: Why I Chose Nigeria Ahead Of England

Chelsea FC of England’s defender, now on-loan at Championship side Hull City, Ola Aina was called up to the Super Eagles for the World Cup double-header against the Indomitable Lions. Inability to conclude his paperwork with FIFA meant the 20-year old missed the first leg in Uyo but was an unused substitute in the return leg in Yaounde.

Aina sat down with completesportsnigeria.com’s KAYODE OGUNDARE to discuss a wide range of issues including his change of allegiance to Nigeria from England where he’d represented England at under-16, under-17, under-18, under-19 and under-20 levels…

What are your first impressions of Nigeria?

I love Nigeria. It’s been fun since I arrived. Nigeria is such a beautiful place and the people are always eager to help and make you feel at home.

And what has been the reception by other players?

The players have shown me love. Everyone has been especially kind to me since I joined up that it’s hard to believe that I’ve not known them all my life. They did a welcome party for the new players and we were expected to sing karaoke. I sang Timaya’s song and it was fun. The staff have also gone out of their way to help me settle in and I’m very grateful for that. It couldn’t have been better than this.

So why did you choose Nigeria ahead of England?

That’s very simple. I choose Nigeria because it’s my country. (Laughs)

But you could have chosen England too?

Yes, but I chose Nigeria. (Laughs again). Seriously speaking, Nigeria is a great country and the lure of playing for the Super Eagles was too appealing to turn down. Of course, at the time I couldn’t play for England for reasons I didn’t know so when the opportunity came to switch to Nigeria I grabbed it with both hands and though it’s still early days yet but I’m enjoying myself here and I hope to be with the Nigerian team for a long while to come.

What personal and team targets have you set for yourself?

Obviously the main target for now is to get to the World Cup with Nigeria. That is a target that we are on the verge of achieving, thanks largely to the efforts of the guys who started this journey from Matchday 1 and we just have to hold on and make it a dream come true. Playing in the World Cup is the peak of any player’s career. After that we can talk about the African Nations Cup and all the other competitions Nigeria qualify for.

For me, I want to do well and win things both with club and country. I’m not asking for much, am I?

Let’s go back to your loan deal at Hull City. What are the conditions and how long is it for?

The loan deal is for a season but Chelsea inserted a clause that they could recall me at any time they want so we have to wait and see how it goes. I’m enjoying myself already because I need regular playing time in order to maximise my potentials so going to Hull City is the best decision to happen to my game at this point in my career.

Does that mean you are not good enough to get into this Chelsea team?

Of course I can do that. I’m confident in my ability and I will take my chance when it comes. Going on loan is a learning curve, not an inability to play at the highest level.

Ola, it’s nice talking to you and we wish you best of luck with Nigeria and Chelsea

Thank you very much. It’s been my pleasure talking to you

I don't agree with this, the last match against algeria even if we win in uyo, should be used as a warm up game for team blending ahead of the world cup which is less than a year away. It can also be used to boost our FIFA rankings so we can get Grade A friendly games ahead of the world cup. NFF ought to know better nah
haba! You can't invite people repeatedly and you never play them.

You want to keep using your main players for a dead rubber game and you think they won't burn out? It's a given

After the Zambian game, it won't be hard to get Grade A friendlies, not like the fringe players will go and collect eight goals from Algeria. You can work on team blending with friendlies later on. It will be unwise to keep playing the likes of Moses, Mikel and Leon over and over without rest

I support this move wholeheartedly and it will most likely turn out better than you're anticipating

Why is it that we are lacking in this left back position? Truth is, not since Babayaro have we had a good left back. Taiwo lacked refinement, Udezie was inconsistent and now Echiejile. The right back position will more easily be beefed up than the left.
