Looolll.... I am seeing it oooo Sir GoodJoe.... Julian is truly a savvy coach.. a really talented tactician and football thinker... Nacho would have learnt a lot from him and Julian personally wanted Nacho but well.... maybe in the future their paths may still cross. Let Nacho secure his passport (main reason he didn't move outside England as Jardim of Monaco also came for him) and we will see from there.... Under Shakes, Nacho can still learn a thing or two especially with exposure to Vardy, one of the EPL's best strikers and fastest forwards...

TheGoodJoe:

Are you seeing what Nagelsmann, the young coach who wanted Iheanacho is doing to Bayern Munich? Hoffenheim is leading Bayern Munich 2-0.

Already stated that Aina and Tyrone are our options there... The question is are they good enough to displace him yet... Those kids are rookies on the international stage... When push comes to shove experience will carry ụwa through... All I am asking for is we give him the respect he deserves.... Cc Sir icon4s

My sincere opinion on this issue.

Elderson Echiejile:
Since the modern era of Nigerian football IE since the 1990s. Elderson Echiejile is our worst regular natural LB. IE comparing him with Ben Iroha, Celestine Babayaro and Taye Taiwo.

Echiejile peaked in 2013 but has been struggling to make any statements close to what he did at the 2013 AFCON.
Consequently, successive coaches have tried to replace him. Juwon Oshaniwa who deputised for him at the 2013 AFCON replaced him at the 2014 WC due to injury. Shortly after the WC Juwon was hit by injury and and started struggling for form and fitness. He never recovered. Keshi brought in Kingsley Madu. Oliseh brought back Echiejile. Siasia came in and preferred Stanley Amuzie. Rohr came in and we are back to Echiejile.

Now the question is what are the career levels of Juwon, Madu, and Amuzie today? Echiejile is still there because the younger LBs that are supposed to give him a competition have not measured up.

Shehu Abdullahi:
Started his Super Eagles career under Keshi as a midfielder. He was once of the standout performers in our 2014 CHAN team alongside Ejike Uzoenyi, Rabiu Alli, Chima Akas and Gbolahan Salami. Since then he had always made Keshi's squad as a midfielder. He also made Oliseh's squads as a midfielder. Siasia, who we know as an adventurous coach, was the one that first tried Shehu at RB. He fitted in almost seamlessly and played that role through to the Olympics. He also played RB in the Egypt double header. Shehu was never fantastic but he never disappointed. Probably due to fact that he is not a natural RB and the level of competitiveness or lack of it in the league he plays Rohr never really had confidence in his abilities .

Rohr has tried several players at RB before now: Musa Mohammed, Wilfred Ndidi and Kenneth Omeruo. Tyrone Ebuehi was invited into the frame of things. Finally they settled on Shehu at RB but with eyes on capturing Ola Aina for that position for a possible longer term.

Shehu has recently won the hearts of many and there are opinions of him keeping that position and we trying Aina at LB.

Ola Aina:
A highly talented RB. Hugely rated to walk into that RB position. Has just been cleared by FIFA to represent Nigeria. However, Shehu's approval ratings have just skyrocketed and many are already suggesting the LB position for Aina. But the question is can Rohr trust him well enough to start him at LB against Zambia?

Gernoth Rohr:
He is not much of a risk taker. He prefers experience over youth. He is probably still suffering from the burns of Fielding an inexperienced CB against SA (untypical of him) and may have learned a lot from that.

Icon4s:
I like consistency at the defence. I admire Ola Aina's abilities but also believe Shehu Abdullahi can get the job done against Zambia and more so that he (Shehu) is beginning to form a good partnership with the CBs and forwards. Should Ola Aina replace Shehu at RB? In as much as I don't really fancy changes in defensive positions I would want Rohr to give Aina a fair assessment. Has Shehu performed well? Yes he has. Can we get a player that can better his performance? Definitely Yes. In as much as Shehu has done well especially in his most recent games especially with his link up plays he still has problems in his positioning as he was caught out of position on a couple of occasions. Plus his crosses are not there yet.

I would fancy Shehu to start against Zambia but moving forward I would fancy Ola Aina to take over that position. Shehu is there as a utility player. And if Ola Aina doesn't measure up as expected well Shehu again until we get another natural RB.

Aina at LB? Too risky.

I hope Rohr lure him to play for Nigeria.

The case concerning Echiejile is simple. Anyone who can play LB and don't get bullied like the way he was bullied can replace him. You are either bad or good. I've not seen a fine performance from Echiejile for quite a while. Let's remove all sentiments about age etc. we have 20 year olds starting as defenders in the big leagues and countries. Yes we are going to need experience at the back. Echiejile is not the kind of experience we need. Balogun is. Aina will bench Echiejile at LB. it's not complicated.

TIAGO ILORI FINALLY COMING OF AGE AT READING

For the first time since leaving Sporting four years ago, there may finally be light at the end of the tunnel for the former Liverpool youngster

It may be an odd thing to say of a player who has represented both Liverpool and Sporting CP (both have 37 domestic league titles between them) but on Tuesday night, Tiago Ilori played arguably the biggest match of his young career at the Madejski Stadium in Berkshire.

Ilori may be only 24, but he seemed in danger of drifting into obscurity.

He broke into the first team at Sporting in 2013, making his senior league debut for the Lions alongside a certain Eric Dier in defence in a 3-2 victory over Gil Vicente. In total, he made 11 league appearances before Liverpool decided they had seen enough and snagged him for an undisclosed fee. Dier stayed one more season in Lisbon, and then moved to Tottenham Hotspur.

One can only speculate as to the reasons, but what is clear is that the paths of both players have diverged markedly.

Eric Dier Tottenham Premier League

Liverpool perhaps proved a step too far, and too soon, and after sundry loans, the Reds finally cut their losses, accepting a bid by Reading to take the player off their hands in a club-record deal for the Royals.

Dier has blossomed in London, scoring on his debut, becoming a mainstay at White Hart Lane, and representing England at the Euros last summer.

It is a cautionary tale, and not just about the dangers young players face moving to a huge clubs in a different league.

Dier came into Tottenham as one of the first signings of Mauricio Pochettino’s tenure, a manager whose demands on defensive players suited him down to a tee. The Argentine has refined the 23-year-old, magnifying his strengths and showing him the trust that is so crucial to player development.

That same intangible but crucial ingredient has been in short supply for Ilori, first under Brendan Rodgers, and then under Jurgen Klopp.

Tiago Ilori of Reading & Fulham's Marcus Bettinelli.jpg

No surprise then that, under Dutch legendary defender Jaap Stam, he may belatedly be coming of age.

In the absence of club skipper Paul McShane, Ilori came into the backline for the second leg of the Championship playoff semi-final against Fulham, and was magnificent. For context, the Cottagers finished the regular season tied with Newcastle United for the league’s best attack (85 goals scored), and led both on shots per game and average possession.

Basically, this Fulham side can play.

Despite a lack of playing time this term, Ilori turned in a thoroughly accomplished performance, with he and veteran goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi particularly defiant under heavy shelling. Particularly impressive was his ability to anticipate the movement of ball, cutting out Fulham attacks before they had a chance to develop.

He was not, however, averse to getting his hands (and shorts) dirty, as shown by his game-high five tackles. On the bench, Stam must have smiled quietly, himself a tough-tackling defender in his playing days, at the sort of assertiveness that was so frequently lacking while the 24-year-old was at Anfield.

Tiago Ilori of Reading

On the basis of this display, he now has a choice to make for the final as to whether to retain Ilori in the starting line-up for the playoff final against Huddersfield Town following their penalty victory over Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday. If they do secure promotion though, we will finally get to see how the Portuguese-Nigerian would get on at the highest level, a possibility denied us while he was with Liverpool.

This would be vital for the possibility of him playing for Nigeria at some point in the future, as Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr will not consider players in the lower divisions. There is, however, a bit of a shortage at the back for the Super Eagles, with an injection of quality surely needed.

Ilori has, up to this point, featured exclusively for the Portugal youth sides despite also being eligible for England, and was a part of their squad to last year’s Olympic Games in Rio. However, the step up to the senior national side is the steepest, and Nigeria could very profit within the window of uncertainty.

First though, there is work to do to convince. He has taken the first step and seized the opportunity handed him, and though it has taken him a lot longer, he may finally be able to showcase what it is Liverpool saw in him four years ago.
