There aren't many police units in the world, which receive the same training as the STF, much of the selection and training is identical to that of the SANDF special forces, they are also Para qualified!! On average only 1 in 50 eventually make it.....compare that to 1-10 for the Navy seals and you get an idea how insane these guys are.

here is some real confirmation of how good the STF is: the STF have NEVER lost a SINGLE hostage in its history, they have a 100% hostage rescue rate, if that's not real confirmation I don't what is!!

Of the Units you mentioned only GIGN is comparable in terms of type of training which operators under go.

SAPS has over 150 000 members, over 200 try out in the STF pre-Selection annually, of which about 30 go on to Selection, with not more than 10 passing annually. Some years nobody passes - police STF Selection processes are among the world's toughest - and so yes, it's a rigorous test. I think that's what he meant.

As for the 99 members: I do have a public document with 177 STF members for that year though. 90 is the lowest we ever got at the height of the war in Iraq when Western PMCs lured so many of our operators. Since then we've stabilised the situation somewhat, with better pay for STF and other specialised units. All the metros now have STF bases fully complemented, which should give some indication of the numbers.

The head of the FBI's HRT Unit - equivalent to the STF - could not believe the STF training regimen and especially when Delta Force requested cross-training with them, before the 2010 World Cup.

Alpha Group of the Counter Assault Unit (CAT) of the Presidential Protection Unit (PPU) of the SAPS which has been poaching the best members of the STF and the military SF, without training its own...

Because of experience.

An officer in SASTF will see more action in one year than most other officers will see in their entire careers.

Same with South African doctors (and Mexican/Cuban/Thai), for example. They build experience faster than most of their first world piers, this experience translates into institutional knowledge this is then passed on through training and translates into better doctors who then build on the experience and so and and so forth

Quite interesting.

Looking at the ARA quite closely, it's armour can quite easily be replaced. It is detachable.
